For Spring 2011, General Idea designer Bumsuk Choi focused on the idea of nostalgia. Guests found a pack of colored pencils on each of their seats, and newsboy caps and patchwork shirts on the runway were reminiscent of easier times. The show opened with a group of sharp, clean outerwear pieces, from a striking, bright red anorak to a throwback college jacket. There was a distinct air of cheer in this collection, a change from what Choi showed for Fall, with its dark palette of black, gray, and navy. Instead, bright blue and red were the focal points, along with prints reminiscent of Pollock drip paintings and Stephen Sprouse graffiti. Pleated shorts and pants billowed, cinched at the waist with rope belts—a signal trend for Spring. When the models returned for the finale, each wore a bold cape over his original outfit, a look that telegraphed intensity and clear vision.
