The influence of iconic French director Jacques Tati was visible everywhere in Perry Ellis’ Spring 2011 collection, from the color block knits to the projection of swaying palm trees that covered the back of the tent. The color palette—a mélange of sherbet colors like orange, peach, and muskmelon—was straight out of “Mon Oncle,” while the midcentury Riviera feel came from “M. Hulot’s Holiday.” The wavy hair and the jazzy piano trills on the soundtrack added to the air of simple and restrained elegance, just right for a late summer trip to the shore. For the finale, the models returned in a selection of colorful and printed swim trunks, a fitting reminder that less is more when it comes to the classics.
