Daniel/Ford Models. Polaroid MDC.

We meet many male models but few are as effortlessly charismatic and handsome as Ford’s Daniel Liu. Could it be his Southern Californian appeal, his surfer sensibility or his movie star good looks? Whatever it is, Mario Testino certainly agrees placing Daniel as the newest kid on the block in his Uniqlo ads chock full of supermodels. Here OTM gives you a tiny sliver of his charm with the video below.

  2. row says:

just a few months ago, i commented on how few asian male models there were (still are) in the fashion business. now here comes Daniel Liu. Glad that another asian male model has appeared, but i would like to see more diverse asian models (different looks other than the traditional squinted eye look). btw, Betty, is he taiwanese/chinese?

  3. Azure says:

He is amazing hot. Unfortunately he started quite late didn’t he?

-Row: i think he is Taiwanese like Philip Huang- but dosn’t that mean he is of Chinese ancestry?

  4. Scribe says:

He looks hot even with a plain background, no fancy lighting or make up. He’s just really good looking! Can’t wait to see more from him. I think he’s 26 – young for a male model. He has beautiful eyes!!!

  17. kimi says:

I have to agree with Alex. Just off the top of my head I can list some better looking Asian male models: Andrew – Ford NY, Bertie – Major NY, Jack – Vision LA, Kris – Click LA, Daniel – DNA, and I’m sure there’s a bunch more. I’d love to see more Asian guys and girls, but this isn’t it.

  18. And says:

  21. St. Pita says:

What do you mean by the squinted eye look? don’t most asian people have that characteristic anyways, unless they get plastic surgery to have another eyelid added.

  22. aaron says:

^ young for a male model? at 26? really? with all these 18 year old boys on the runways? mmkay…

  23. Sundal says:

yes, he’s gorgeous but a longer video with some more conversation other than where you from, what’s your agency would help convey a bit more of that charm you talked about! But i agree, it’s nice to see some more diverse models doing well, let’s see some more south east asians as well, we are grossly under-represented in the fashion industry- Krishan from premier is testament that these boys can be as high fashion as they come.

  24. Ben says:

Nice to see an Asian model get a chance to shine. Diversity is still desperately needed in fashion.

  25. Amber says:

I’m so happy to see more Asian models! And he’s just fucking gorgeous.

  33. ALVARO says:

  34. Alice says:

not that i don’t like the tranditional ‘asian eye look’, but i totally agree with what ‘row’ said – we really need more diversed Asian models on the runway! we don’t always have those eyes ok!!!! in fact all my Asian freinds including myself are big eyed with double eye lids @_@~ Asian beauty is sooo over looked!!! we’re diverse so give us a chance please!!!!

  44. Asian Male Revolutions says:

    Re: Daniel Liu

I think this guy definitely has what it takes to get to the top of the fashion world.

And just for the record – as an Asian American man I am getting tired of some of you “fashionistas” pushing a ‘Eurasian’ look as the standard for Asian Male beauty.

Daniel Liu, along with Philip Lim and other non-Eurasian East Asian males, represent a form of ethnic beauty that is undiluted by European genes.

Now, do NOT take what I say above out of context and twist my words around – I think that Eurasians and mixed-race individuals are stunning too, but please do not get in the habit of thinking that they represent the entire SPECTRUM of beauty in non-white peoples around the world.

Because in doing so, you deny ethnic beauty it is truest form. Not some ‘socially-acceptable (to whites) hybrid form’ of ethnic beauty.

Think about it: how is that any different from pushing bi-racial/mulatto beauty onto the world? This isn’t the first time the fashion industry has been accused of ‘whitewashing’ beauty standards.

    Asian Male Revolutions

  45. TS says:

    * fainted when Daniel Liu smiled *

  46. John Young says:

    I agree with Jake here.

There is a need to capture the beauty of the asian male in the fashion world and not think that you have to have a mixed eurasian model to get a large percentage of the market. I personally less incline to buy anything fashionable because I don’t see any asian male models. Eurasian models don’t represent closely to my looks. However I am very athletic and muscular with a square jaw and most models are thin and almost feminine like. If you are convinced that a piece of clothing looks good on an asian male and on a white male then it is not hard to be convinced that should be safe for a eurasian to look just as good with the same.

I am not saying not to cut the eurasian models out but rather that you have a far great spectrum of good looking male specimens from pure racial stock that can do the same but also appeal to a market untapped.

    Re: Daniel Liu

There are many asian males that has the same beauty standard that he has got. What the scouts are failing to do is to spot such males at an early age. He moves well and is articulate and has a killer simile. Runaway /cover models have to move well and be flexible with their looks. In one sense, sometimes they have to be a fairly plain looking with a plain setting but they then transform the place once they start moving and also able light up in a theme setting as well. A plain ethnic person captures an interest in plain settings almost without effort but the real modeling comes with the movement and shapes and emotional content. There must be very little doubt that Daniel Liu can deliver this, if Ford models hires him.

  47. Brittany says:

Daniel Liu has stunning good looks =] Look at that face, & that body, & that smile…omg I could fall in love with this guy, I’m not even joking lol. He’s absolutely gorgeous! I agree with Jake. Daniel has what it takes to become a familiar face in the fashion world. He has both the looks & the charm. Non-Eurasian males in the fashion industry are practically non-existent. Non-Eurasian males are beautiful too & should be properly represented in the fashion industry in order to help promote TRUE diversity.

  48. Alexandra says:

Brittan, John, Jake — tell it! :->

    For my two cents…

Having worked in some facet of the fashion industry all my life, with seamstresses and tailors and sportswear manufacturers on both sides of my family, briefly as a model in my ’20s, and as an editor at Women’s Wear Daily in the ’90s, and now with costumers for theatre and rock performances, it is a long-awaited triumph to see Liu’s sort of unabashed Asian look/feel be universally hailed as manly and beautiful (not what my Japanese male friends call the androgynous “mannequin boys” of Visual Kei, say…I like that, too…but it’s hardly a standard of beauty that is natural…) in every way, by anyone’s standards. That was once unheard of, make no mistake about that.

So many ways to be beautiful out there and they WILL sell if you present them as beautiful…the happy is contagious, especially from the mass media. We can make that work to a positive advantage and Liu has made a great contribution and Ford and Uniqlo. Bravi, tutti Love him and the ad campaign!

  49. Heather says:

Oh my…that Daniel Liu…I would do unspeakable things to him :x

    Jake of Asian Male Revolutions:

“…do not get in the habit of thinking that they [Eurasians] represent the entire SPECTRUM of beauty in non-white peoples around the world…Because in doing so, you deny ethnic beauty it is truest form. Not some ‘socially-acceptable (to whites) hybrid form’ of ethnic beauty.”

I understand completely what you are saying…and I agree. I know that Hollywood and the media tries to downplay Asians, especially Asian males…that’s why there’s so few of them in commercials, magazines, movies, etc.

Of course, you’re more likely to see Asian women rather than Asian men.

I visited your website and I think you are doing amazing work. I’m now following you on facebook and I encourage others to do the same!

  50. John says:

His OK looking but I think it’s more how he comes out in photos that are more important. I seen people who look good in real life but look bad in photos and the other way too.

  51. Pamela N Red says:

Great to see an Asian man in advertising. Love to see more. I agree with the guys above. Nothing wrong with Eurasian guys but don’t forget the full blood cuties.
