VIVA VIVIEN:

For Fall 2000 Ford's Vivien Solari highlighted the following campaigns: Calvin Klein (exclusive),Giorgio  Armani's Mania perfume, Burberry, Genny, Ralph Lauren Purple Label and Club Monaco. Just one of those bookings would have been enough to place her at the forefront of public consciousness, yet as omni-present as she is on the campaign trail,  the striking English beauty is equally elusive off-set. Its almost as if her ubiquity in the magazines is in inverse proportion to her silence. Yet that silence , frankly is what keep them coming back for more season after season.

Here is Vivien in Martha Carmarillo's downtown loft, literally stopping off on her way to JFK to shoot the previously viewed cover and for a girl wreathed in mystique, Solari certainly is earthy. Born in Aruba, a small island in the South Eastern Caribbean, Vivien spent the early part of her life traveling throughout England before settling down in Birmingham. The unpretentious clarity she carries owes a lot to her growing up in that particular city.

Laughing at the photographer's outline for the day ("Sexy but with  confrontation") Vivien smiles and playfully offers "In other words I get to look all tarty again!" But like the consummate professional that she is, Vivien falls into character within  seconds, internalizing the 1920's/Man Ray energy of her poses with little difficulty.

But that's where intelligence, whether innate or developed in a model becomes a useful thing. Its very common for strong photographers to invoke a specific reference as an inspiration for their shoots and if a model can flow with that then it makes for a better photograph. And a better photograph is the whole name of the game.

Intelligence is not in short supply with Vivien. In fact she was discovered while attending the University of Birmingham where she was studying psychology. It was that fateful day in a flea market with a chance encounter with a Models One booker and a sensational career was launched.

"If you look at Vivien's career, you see a subtle thread of really smart choices about what she shoots. She's always shown in a certain way, as a  certain kind of girl. She's protected almost." remarks Carmarillo.

And it is that protection that allows her to shoot for such a wide variety of clients without  over-saturating her own market.

For all that talk however of markets and products and over-saturation, Vivien remains totally grounded. Living just north of London, fashion's most wanted is defiant in her intent to live as normal a life as possible. Despite the career velocity, she can still slip down to the pub and have a drink with her mates and it's a privilege she is not going to let go of anytime soon.

Her perspective is clear "Fashion is something that should be fun and for experimenting with. I think that sometimes it can be taken a bit too seriously. To be a model you have to be strong minded but also able to work well with others and be confident enough to stand up for yourself. You have to be able to take criticism as well as compliments. Every industry has its bad aspects : you have to be sensible and stay away from those parts. I think my success is due to being as professional as possible ...and maybe also a bit of luck.

And that calm focus is why Vivien is the girl with the most cake, right this minute.
