So Ya Wanna Be A Supermodel - Part 2 |

Getting Started: The Low Down On The Agencies Jamie Rishar was an average small town girl discovered at a New Jersey high school and because she is 5 feet, five inches had to be persuaded for over a year before she finally signed to her first (and only) agency. Stella Tennant, from one of Britian's wealthiest families modeled once as a favor to her photographer friend Steven Miesel who then called her a few weeks later to offer her a Versace campaign. France's Chrystele St Louis Agustine was a university student discovered at a casting call for a Benetton campaign, an open casting she almost didn't show up for because she thought her signature frizzy hair looked a mess. She is now one the major runway staples on the scene.

| The ways in which new models are discovered are as varied and unpredictable as the individuals involved. Essentially what needs to be understood is that agencies and photographers scout constantly and aggressively for new faces all over world. There are people who make a living from scouting and you stand as good a chance of being discovered by hanging out in the hippest NY clubs as you do chilling in a Florida shopping mall. Agencies live in terror of missing out on the next Claudia or Christy so the first thing you should remember is no agency is doing you a favor by signing you. They are doing business, which means they are as interested in finding you as you are in finding them. Essentially what we're saying is hanging out with your friends (at the mall, at a cafe, at a club, after school, etc ) is perhaps the best and cheapest way to be discovered because there are people out there searching for you.

| Apart from catching the eyes of an agency scout, it is
completely appropriate to send in a simple picture of yourself to an agency you are
interested in. DO NOT SPEND A LOT OF MONEY on creating a fancy portfolio,
there are supermodels who have been discovered with nothing but a Polaroid. Send two
pictures, one simple, in say a T-shirt or a tank top and a second that is more of a full
facial close-up. It is not necessary to impress an agency with hundreds of fancy
headshots, just send something that is a clean, honest representation of who you really
are. You stand a better chance sending in a shot where you are wearing no make-up than
you do with a shot where you are trying to copy some other models' look or poses.
