Raf Simons has had as prolific a career as any of the major players in design. From former student at the Antwerp Royal Academy to the helm of major labels, Christian Dior in 2012, Jil Sander in 2005, and his own eponymous line that he started in 1995, his resume reads as an impressive unfolding. The Belgian creator’s singular aesthetic has evolved with much critical acclaim from youth culture to the feminine modernity that made ladies swoon during his time at Sander and Dior. It’s been barely a month since his abrupt departure from Dior after more than three years at the couture house, and many have talked about what his renewed interest in personal projects, in and out of fashion, will bring. Emblematic of the turning tide with many dismayed designers questioning the hurtling pace of fashion, Simons announced his departure to refocus on his own brand and other passions. But what will be his next move? On the 20th anniversary of its launch, we looked back at his personal line’s development throughout the years and what has defined Raf Simons as a designer. Platinum beauty Marjan Jonkman shows off the major archival pieces captured by Models.com’s own Steven Yatsko for your viewing pleasure.
