Marilyn Monroe remains an enduring influence on fashion designers and pop culture enthusiasts alike, but when Prabal Gurung looks to the iconic actress for inspiration the end result is anything but typical. Citing Bert Stern‘s now classic portraits of Marilyn as his starting point, Gurung delved into the iconography of the 50s, with a twist of carefree insouciance. Vintage silhouettes with their old school femininity can often be too retro for their own good, but Gurung added modernity via a wealth of high tech materials and his out of this world prints. Delivered in an array of electric pastels, Gurung’s pencil skirts, nipped waist day-dresses and satin sheaths were a futuristic take on a much loved look. Standout moments include the punk polish of jewelry created in collaboration with Chris Habana & Zana Bayne and the final lineup of refined black, white and sparkling violet accented gowns.

prabal gurung is a very innovative designer. I was shocked when I first saw a few of his pieces about a year or so ago. some of them I pinned on my pinterest under avant garde fashion. it was a few dresses in colorful lace flowery pattern in a mix of bold and playful design with a sheer of sexiness. too bad that I couldn’t see much on this video but I’m gonna check it out more on youtube.
