MBMJ Fall/Winter 2014

Sisters are doing it for themselves! The revitalized Marc by Marc Jacobs made its fashion week debut yesterday, and the high octane show was well worth the wait. New designers Luella Bartley and Katie Hillier come with a high fashion pedigree – Luella’s eponymous line was a London fashion week mainstay for years while Hillier is the talent behind all those covetable Victoria Beckham bags, as such expectations were high and the duo didn’t disappoint. The fall showing for the line (which will now go by MBMJ) was a feminine and forceful mix of hard and soft that was completely in line with the wants of its youthful, trend conscious audience.

Starting with a simple black number on the new face Dani Witt, Bartley & Hillier built a collection heavy on streetwear essentials like high top sneakers, embellished button down blouses and upgraded basics like blazers with contrasting lapels, or cardigans with tortoise shell buttons. Edgy flavor was added via references to biker culture and buzzwords emblazoned on shirts, skirts and everything in-between. Phrases like “revolution” and “bunny hop” were scrawled in neon and crimson giving the pieces a rebellious flair that is sure to resonate with generation Y. Stripes and plaid were another motif in classic black and white, or delivered with a splash of red for a punk feel. Plays on proportion added another touch of excitement via oversized bows and folds that seemed slightly reminiscent of CdG. Add in some leather jackets and layered skirts and you have the makings of an electric look with enough versatility to please even the most discerning critic. No doubt many of them are pre-ordering their plaid cross-body bags and applique covered denim as we speak.
