Julia Hafstrom’s copper locks and idyllic, fanciful beauty seem fairy-tale born with features that furnished a continually steadfast career. A feat considering the model landscape: a game of musical chairs buoyed by an industry penchant for newer-and-nower girls. But from her Prada runway debut way back – she was just a fresh faced Swede in 2008 – and her first shoot with Steven Meisel to her recent Gucci campaign shot by Glen Luchford, Julia’s titian tinge and rare angles regularly captivate the top photographers. Equally alluring back when Thom Jackson captured Hafstrom in the rolling landscape of Marfa for Models.com, Hafstrom is this time around lensed by Van Sarki. The team keeps things bright and fresh working in plenty of pastel for this airy story. Since this is Julia’s sophomore MDX story and second go around on Top 50, Models.com wanted to get a little more familiar. Read her interview below.

Since it’s topical –Meisel leaving as Vogue Italia’s solo cover lensman– how was working with him?

It was a very cool experience for me; my first job ever in New York was shooting Italian Vogue with him. Such an amazing introduction into the fashion world. I remember being nervous before the shoot, but when we started shooting I was so focused that the nerves went away. He knows what he wants and to be a part of his work is very rewarding.

What’s the most spectacular show you’ve walked and what sticks in your mind about it?

Louis Vuitton FW14 show. I was exclusive for it so it was super cool seeing the collection get made. It was my first show in a few years so I remember it well. It took me a minute to get the runway down cause it was a bit complicated, but it made it more fun.

Any stories from the Gucci pre-fall campaign shoot with Glen Luchford? Were you ecstatic to land it?

I was really happy to get that job! When my booker first told me I thought she gave me the wrong schedule, but then my name was on the ticket to London so I packed my bag straight away. I admire Glen Luchford’s work so it was a thrill to get to work with him.

When traveling what are the five items you must bring?

Apart from clothes I’d say comfortable shoes, face cream, phone, a book to read, pens and a book to write and draw in.

Okay, today: no castings, no bookings, no travel, nothing–what would your day off be like?

I draw, knit, listen to music, go for long walks, watch movies and I take the time to clean my apartment.

What about advice to your 16 year old self? Advice to your future self?

I’d say don’t stress to both my past and future self, it’s important I think. Most things work out in the end.

What’s something you haven’t achieved but hope to?

I’d like to live on a secluded piece of land that I take care of myself, where I can grow my own vegetables and flowers and breath in fresh air everyday.

What’s your favorite / most memorable direction a photographer has ever given to you?

I did a shoot in the forest once and I got to run around and pretend I was in a different world. It was like being a kid again.

What’s the first thing you do when you arrive in a foreign country? Do you ever act like a tourist?

It depends what time of day it is, but I usually go for a walk to get a feel of the city I’m in. I’ve done touristy things for sure, but it’s not the first thing I’ll do in a new place.

If you had to wear only one designer who would it be?

Céline, I think. I always feel cool in Céline.

I wonder why she’s not a “Money Girl”, she’s had probably every Tommy Hilfiger campaign since 2010. Now that she’s having a major comeback moment, she could easily qualify for the Top50 too.

  2. Gina says:

Yah, it seems every list is in need of an overhaul right now.

    Hi Lily!
This story was to come out along with her re-introduction back to Top 50 but it took just a bit longer to get the top 50 up!

I just cannot get over her moment at LV Fall 2014, that exclusive relaunched her career all over again. We see it happen, casting directors, stylist bring a model back and sometimes it doesn’t work or their work doesn’t improve. But with Julia its opened a new door. Its nice to see her back here she belongs!

  5. Anna says:

I am happy that she’s back in high fashion. I’ve loved her look since her Prada campaign with Ymre. That face just draws me in every time!
