John Varvatos Men Spring/Summer 2013

If John Varvatos’s new direction is any indication, it’s time for all the rock kids to grow up. Varvatos, who has become the go-to designer for music stars that mix a rebellious sensibility with a natty streak—think Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong or Alice Cooper—went refined and elegant for Spring 2013, showing a collection of crisp three-piece suits and sharp overcoats that were mature without being stuffy. There were wide-brimmed fedoras and double-breasted jackets, small touches that felt cheeky and a little bit retro, appropriately enough for a season that Varvatos said found inspiration in David Bowie and Brian Jones. There was an overall sense of estival lightness—nothing screams summer more than a white suit, after all—and the neckties that accompanied each look seemed as natural a fit as the distressed leather jackets that formerly epitomized the Varvatos aesthetic. It’s always a risk of sorts when designers step outside their comfort zones, but Varvatos proved that he has a very good chance of convincing his customers to come along with him.
