You've Come A Long Way Baby!
| All of seven years ago, Wigstock was born as a tawdry little joke amongst a bunch of
drunken drag queens based out of New York City's Pyramid Club. Now it has grown into
being founder's Lady Bunny's demi-corporate franchise complete with films, benefits, CD's,
books and exhibitions. It is also the unofficial launch event of the Fall Downtown
Season so that makes The Lady, the Truman Capote of the East Village 90's in so far as
deciding who appears on her Highnesses' stage. But who pays attention to the stage
acts anymore: the whole thing has become an extravagant waltz of exhibitionists and
voyeurs. Here as evidence is the startling work of photographer Denise Larocque who beautifully chronicles the dynamic madness that is New York City's Wigstock. (Keep away from small children.) |
