She is one of the most legendary presences in the history of modeling, blazing a trail that has smoothed the path for today's generation of African models. She is, in addition, a shrewd and far-seeing businesswoman, launching a revolutionary make-up line that pre-figured the recent diversification of the make-up industry. The wife of rock legend David Bowie and one of the most impossibly glamorous women we know, MODELS.com's was very pleased to catch up with the incomparable Iman. Tune in as she sits with our resident make-up maven Angie Parker.

What encouraged you to bring out your first make-up line for women of colour?

Iman: For 14 years as a model, I was frustrated with the lack of products that were available in the market for women of colour. I had to mix and match my foundations and powders so I could achieve a natural colour for my skin. In 1994 I created I-Iman Cosmetics, a comprehensive skin care and cosmetics collection for all women of colour, African-American, Hispanic, Asian, and Native American, primarily sold in JC Penney.

Since the launch of I-Iman Cosmetics, it seems that every other company has followed your lead and incorporated shades for darker skin. Why did you feel the need to launch a second line?

Iman: Iman Cosmetics is a niche brand exclusively for women of colour and their specific needs. I-Iman Make-Up is for all women of style. It's not exclusive but all inclusive. It's a prestige line with the most incredible high pigmented couture colours. There are no rules. No boundaries. Just lots of colour, style, and attitude. It's hyped up and fabulous. It's hip glamour. I-Iman Make-up is urban luxe for all skins.

What then do you think are the strengths of I-Iman?

Iman: The strength of my make-up range lies in the hands of the consumers. What I have created and made available to them is a comprehensive colour couture collection. Foundations and powders that have a natural, oil free and flawless finish. Lipsticks and glosses that have glorious, glamorous, techicolour shades. Shimmering powders and soft colours. Creme and powder dual eye shadows in opulent colours that play with light and drama. Multi-purpose brushes. Reusable stencil eyebrow kits that take the guesswork out of grooming and shaping eyebrows. And just for the hell of it, silver metallic adhesive nails.
