Spring Clean

May 12th, 2015 |Posted by jonathanshia

Spring may have just barely started, but Spanish menswear magazine Varón Magazine is already looking ahead to the rest of the year, with a Summer/Autumn issue celebrating rebirth and renewal, out now. Coverboy Julius Gerhardt makes a striking comeback, fresh off walking for Prada exclusively in January after coming out of a life-threatening coma. Piczo opens the issue with a celebration of British designers, from upstarts like Craig Green and J.W. Anderson to old standbys Paul Smith and Vivienne Westwood, styled by Hugo Lavín on Simon Fitskie.

Editorials by Lonny Spence and Yann Faucher lead into Autumn 2015 previews by Nacho Pinedo and Mark Kean, while interviews with Marni’s Consuelo Castiglione, Zegna’s Stefano Pilati, and Pablo Coppola of Bally add some heft. Rising designer Lou Dalton expounds on the merits of apprenticeships, and Frances Corner, head of the London College of Fashion, insists on the value of higher education—even in an age of rising tuition fees and diminishing job prospects. Varón has always celebrated the unconventional—previous cover stars include flamenco dancer Yiyo and parfumier Ben Gorham—and this tenth issue proves no different, with a profile on Jon-Allan Butterworth, the paracyclist who lost an arm in a rocket attack in Iraq and went on to win three silver medals at the Paralympic Games in London. Take an exclusive first look at the issue below.

Black & White

November 6th, 2014 |Posted by jonathanshia

Pure black-and-white marks the way forward in the Fall 2014 of Varón Magazine, with the fresh face of seventeen-year-old Yiyo, lauded as the world’s greatest flamenco dancer, staring out from the powerful cover. There’s a similarly clean purity to the rest of the issue as well, from Pizco’s portrait portfolio of thirteen British models styled by Hugo Lavín to Thomas Giddings’ introspective story styled by Way Perry (Jed Root) and starring Simon Fitskie. Erik van Gils brings a soft innocence to Jan Lehner’s Spring 2015 preview, while Lanvin’s Lucas Ossendrijver also offers a look ahead at what’s to come next year. The magazine includes a look at the legendary photographer Stephen Shore, and promising new London-based menswear designers Mirja Rosendahl, Rory Parnell-Mooney, and Sebastiaan Pieter, covering all the bases for the new season. Take a look at the exclusive preview below.

Spring may be better-known as the season for bright prints and colors, but the latest issue of upscale menswear magazine Varon Magazine makes a very convincing argument for the purity and sharp beauty of clean black-and-white. Ben Gorham, founder of the exclusive Byredo fragrance collection, stars in the sharp cover story, lensed by Lonny Spence with styling by Varon’s fashion director Hugo Lavín, while the rest of the magazine is filled with many of the industry’s top new faces in a range of the season’s top designs. Bright young Brits Matthew Bell and Tom Gaskin can be seen in the main collections story, photographed by co editor in chief Nacho Pinedo and dressed by Lavín, while Elliot Vulliod is the centerpiece of a feature on the idiosyncratic designer Umit Benan. But for all its celebration of the here and now, the issue offers a sneak peek ahead as well, with an exclusive preview of Fall 2014 from rising British designer Craig Green captured by Piczo with a clinical austerity softened by gentle portraits that add just the right touch of sensitive emotion. Check out their Instagram page for more beautiful visuals.
