First Looks: The Last Magazine No. 15

September 11th, 2015 |Posted by steven.yatsko

Oversized and gorgeous, the impressive newsprint mag The Last Magazine falls in the higher-order ranks of fashion & art publications for its cultural savviness, industry foresight and beautiful photography. Fall’s issue 15 being no different–well, except it’s nearly entirely photography-free. One of the few photos has tradition meeting the nontraditional as long time Last-muse and oft coverstar Daria Werbowy‘s likeness fronts the mag. Swedish artist Anders Krisár casts the super’s most-recognizable face to create the flesh-toned visage with incredible artistry. As for the approach, editor and chief Magnus Berger explains, “It felt like now, this issue, was the right time to do things a bit differently. As much as we love photography, it’s just one out of many types of media that can be used to depict reality or fantasy, or tell a story.” That said, Sean Ryan “badly draws” a perfectly casted roster of hard-to-get top models from Lara Stone to Karlie Kloss all dressed up in fall’s best denims. Mats Gustafson and Alastair McKimm team up to present a selection of fashion’s favorite silhouettes while rising stars Lola Kirke and Julia Karner both get especially expressive renders. See an exclusive preview of the extra-artsy issue before it hits stands Tuesday.

The Last’s Latest

September 8th, 2014 |Posted by Janelle

The Last Magazine can always be counted on to deliver an epic and oversized cover just in time for fashion month. Fall sees the high end glossy enlisting art photographer Jeff Burton to shoot deliriously beautiful images of Andreea Diaconu for an Alastair McKimm styled fashion story and sun-kissed cover. With the last days of summer upon us the 13th issue’s cover story serves as the perfect sendoff to summer, with Andreea playing the role of ultimate luxe babe. Burton’s artful shots of Andreea capture an energy that is completely in line with the season’s laid back vibe, whether she’s clad in Saint Laurent as the sun hits her just so or floating across a pool of perfectly blue water. Given the beauty of the imagery provided we’re sure many will take pleasure in utilizing The Last’s larger than life size to enjoy these shots as posters.

Cover Confidential

March 20th, 2014 |Posted by Janelle

Feburary and March are big business for fashion magazines with glossies often debuting some of their best and brightest content during these months focused on spring collections, renewal and change. Take a look back at some of the most interesting covers from the boundlessly creative, to the simply beautiful.

Antidote Magazine‘s romance issue boasted multiple covers by Cuneyt Akeroglu featuring some of the world’s most beautiful women. United by their simple yet effective photography and their chic take on the magazine’s pristine subjects these covers were something special.

As one of fashion’s coolest faces Leona Binx Walton is typically photographed looking grungy, avant garde or off-kilter. Her Self Service cover with it’s effective beauty statement and clean layout showed another side. Collier Schorr portrait brings out Binx’s beauty, while maintaining her character.

There are few actresses as effervescent as Marion Cotillard and Interview Magazine‘s March cover captured the La Vie En Rose star’s elegant side with a shot by Craig McDean that positively crackles with good ol’ fashioned glamour. Styled by Karl Templer with makeup by Christophe Danchaud and a 40s coif by Sam McKnight the image strikes the right balance between retro film siren and modern glamour – as does the accompanying fashion story.

On the flip side, Dazed & Confused‘s rough and tumble cover of Scarlett Johansson finds the star’s inner bad girl and brings it to the forefront with a vibrant shot by Benjamin Alexander Huseby . The combo of red background and Saint Laurent biker jacket and Scar-Jo’s glare makes for an appealing contrast to the typical smiling celebrity glamour shot.

You can’t go wrong with a picture of Daria Werbowy and The Last Magazine served up an epic large format image the superstar looking foreboding for it’s spring issue –  Mikael Jansson‘s in your face shot captures Werbowy at her rawest and best.

The Gentlewoman always errs on the side of minimalism, but the pulpy red cover of Vivienne Westwood by Alasdair McLellan (Art Partner) was the perfect merger of timelessness and modernity.

Nick Knight‘s trippy photography has always struck a chord with surrealists and on the cover of GARAGE‘s spring/summer edition he twists and morphs Karlie Kloss and Cara Delevingne into unbidden creatures designs that were eventually tattooed onto the skin of Garage readers – how’s that for taking things to the next level.

E.T. got a fashion makeover with Lindsey Wixson taking over the frontpage of CR Fashion Book with an expressive Sebastian Faena image that puts Wixson’s otherworldly visage to good use with a sweet nod to an 80s favorite.

Karl Lagerfeld’s watercolor inspired spring Chanel collection has proved a hit with editors, in addition to appearing in the pages of just about every magazine imaginable his paint by numbers dresses found themselves on a variety of covers in March, most notably Vogue China, where two of the designer’s creations took center stage.

Not one to be outdone, Miuccia Prada also made a strong showing this March (and April) with a variety of painterly spring looks from her collections showing up on the cover of several different magazines.

First Look: The Last Magazine

February 7th, 2014 |Posted by Betty

The Daria Werbowy allure isn’t about a look as much as it’s about an attitude. With her innate presence and nonchalant take on fashion, the Canadian superstar has inspired the greats of the business. Is it any wonder then that she’s on her second cover of The Last Magazine. Shot by Mikael Jansson and styled by Alastair McKimm, the arresting image perfectly captures the Werbowy allure – cool, collected and complete with now famous nosering. In the accompanying story Mark Carrasquillo (Art Partner) provides the sleek makeup, while Yannick D’Is (New York: Management + Artists, Paris: Management + Artists) creates slicked back hair, both of which add to the dramatic beauty of Jansson’s high contrast shots. With an up close and personal view of one of the world’s most beautiful women, the expressive photos are sure to look incredible in The Last’s larger than life format.

Karmen Chameleon

February 25th, 2013 |Posted by Janelle

Are we in the midst of a Karmen Pedaru moment? All signs point to yes; as the lithe Estonian burns up the runways of Milan we’re treated to several stunning new covers of Karmen this month. The Pedaru visage is featured on some of the coolest magazines in existence and each image provides its own creative take on her appeal.

As one of the ten top model covers of The Last Magazine, Karmen exudes sensuality in Lachlan Bailey (Paris: Management + Artists, New York: Management + Artists)’s sultry black and white shot. On Flair‘s cover Karmen provides an elegant ease that Katja Rahlwes (Paris: Management + Artists, New York: Management + Artists) captures beautifully. That said, the most unexpected cover shot has to be i-D Magazine‘s trippy Daniel Sannwald (New York: Management + Artists, Paris: Management + Artists) image that comes complete with a gif party.
