First Look: The Greatest Fall 2015

October 5th, 2015 |Posted by jonathanshia

For the new Fall/Winter 2015 issue, menswear magazine The Greatest takes as its theme heroes of all sorts, starting from the supremely graceful and athletic star ballet dancer Roberto Bolle, who graces the cover shot by Francesco Brigida and styled by Matteo Greco. A powerhouse lineup of models stars in the main fashion story within by Alessandro Dal Buoni and Greco, from longtime favorites like Ben Allen, Laurie Harding, and Tim Schuhmacher to newer faces Piero Mendez, Matt Doran, Charlie James, and Max Barczak in a youthful take on the season’s idiosyncratic designs. Robbie McKinnon finds himself in expressive sportswear on the beach in a feature by Paolo Zerbini and Greco, while breakout faces George Koh and Lucas Satherley are found in suiting lounging in a sparse field photographed by Clare Shilland and styled by Hanna Kelifa. Mark Kean and Jérôme André contribute a thoughtful vision of fresh youth, and the same quiet introspection can be seen in an accompanying short film, directed by Luca De Santis and starring Florian DesBiendras and Carolina Gonzales. Interviews with Italo Zucchelli of Calvin Klein, Paul Smith, and Bolle’s fellow ballet legend Marie-Agnès Gillot round out the issue, a reminder that there is never a shortage of talents to look up to. Take an exclusive first look at the issue, out today, below.

The Greatest Love of All

March 11th, 2015 |Posted by jonathanshia

“Love is the sea you don’t know how to sail.” So begins the introduction to the seventh issue of Italian menswear biannual The Greatest, which celebrates love with a wistful tone. Baptiste Radufe displays a quiet introspection in the cover story shot by Paolo Zerbini (Atomo Management) with styling by Matteo Greco, a mood that continues through Francesco Brigida (AGENCE SAINT GERMAIN)’s suiting story with Andrey Smidl and Johan Sandberg (Stockholm: LUNDLUND, Paris: ArtList Paris, New York: ArtList NY)’s study of forlorn youth.

Luca Stascheit, Ian Sharp, Rutger Schoone, and Jack Chambers are joined by newer faces Martin Conte and Erik van Gils in a series of quiet portraits, while Gustaaf Wassink gets a surreal twist in the spring’s graphic pieces. The collected interviews offer a refreshing change of pace from the usual, with jazz trumpeter Paolo Fresu and young French actor Pierre Deladonchamps featured alongside Diesel’s new creative director Nicola Formichetti. As with each outing of The Greatest, the Love Issue comes with a special companion video, this one a love story starring rising new face Mihai Bran. Take an exclusive first look below.

A Fine Balance

October 15th, 2014 |Posted by jonathanshia

The sixth issue of Italian menswear The Greatest lands this week with a tone of quiet introspection, taking a meditative approach to its Fall 2014 theme of balance with a contemplative Janis Ancens photographed by Alessandro Dal Buoni. Nemanja Maksic and Tomek Szalanski find equilibrium against each other in Paolo Zerbini (Paris: Atomo Management)’s quiet feature, while Sybille Walter shoots Thibaud Charon in the perfect mix of fabrics, patterns, and textures against a hulking ruin that looms precariously above. Kris Van Assche and Humberto Leon & Carol Lim of Opening Ceremony and Kenzo share their candid thoughts in engaging interviews, while art photographer Luca de Santis offers a series of his signature collages, combining photographs of chairs intertwined in perfect harmony covered with rainbow sprinkles and candies. A gorgeous accompanying film, starring a jagged coastline and Gordon Bothe singing a haunting ode, ends with a mantra worth remembering in our topsy-turvy, twisted age: “Everything in life is about balance.”

Ever since their start back in October 2013, the team behind Italian menswear magazine The Greatest has devoted each issue to a single theme, with the latest—for Spring 2014—revolving around the idea of happiness. “Happiness is something for which we are always looking,” explains Matteo Greco, editor-in-chief. “I needed to find it, I needed to express it. It’s a very simple feeling, but not a trivial one.” That happiness—not, it should be noted, mere light-heartedness or frivolity—comes across most clearly in the opening feature of artwork by photographer Luca de Santis, who spread clusters of cheerful yellow fuzz across otherwise sombre and banal images, injecting a sense of optimism right from the start. The editorials, which Greco says carry the same “nostalgic vision” as in previous issues, also take a lighter tone, from Paolo Zerbini‘s saturated story of youth and innocence to Stefania Paparelli‘s feature on Adrien Sahores, who looks every bit the carefree, dignified Parisian undergrad. Cover model Benjamin Eidem is captured by Lowe H Seger in serene, pale blues styled by Greco himself, who calls Eidem his favorite model and “one of the most elegant I’ve ever worked with.” An accompanying film by Damian Sammarco and Sergio Andretti finds Linus Gustin walking through the city streets dressed all in Dior Homme, seemingly in search of something he can’t quite name. There is a hint of sadness to the proceedings, but Greco reminds us that happiness is, after all, in the eye of the beholder. “Sometimes we are not happy, but we are always the ones who decide whether to be happy or not,” he says. “I decided to be.”

We can always expect a great issue to come from biannual men’s fashion magazine, The Greatest Magazine. The Italian magazine’s latest film features Andre Bona in an eerie all-red film, making a trek through a snow-covered mountain on an unknown journey, lost and lonely, in fabulous Dolce & Gabbana menswear, of course. The rest of the issue is filled with the pristine editorials we’ve come to expect from the young magazine. Whether in studio or on location, the latest and greatest men’s faces and fashion are sure to be featured in the stylish biannaual.

Take a glimpse of the newest issue of The Greatest Magazine with minimalistic spreads of the season’s most coveted looks. The Italian magazine’s third issue, focusing on the theme of “Water”; features Paolo Zerbini shooting Tomek Szczukiecki for the cover (who’s shorn of his signature long locks). Some of the best new faces of the season are featured in staple pieces from the latest Spring Summer collections of Maison Martin Margiela, Jil Sander, Kenzo and more. Interviews with designers Andrea Incontri and Alessandro Sartori (the art director of Berluti) and an evocative fashion film (below, directed by Francesco Brigida) round out an issue overflowing with fresh and modern images, proving that minimal sometimes has a maximal effect.
