The menswear scene has taken an artistic bent of late, with a new season rife with references to painters, sculptors, and other creative minds. Spanish magazine Fucking Young offers a direct appeal in their latest edition, with a Spring issue built around the theme of the museum. Michiel Meewis offers a striking cover image, with Bastiaan Van Gaalen dressed by Ginger Clark in Kenzo’s wave-print coat, his face painted in a riot of soft white strokes. The stories within offer a refreshing variety of artistic scope, from Phil Dunlop’s rich Victorian-inspired portraits to Jay Schoen’s sleek study of pure minimalism, the latest rewards of the long and lasting interaction between fashion and art. Brand Creative : The Best F/W Campaigns So Far

Every top tier brand ushers out a new campaign each season, but only a select few push creative boundaries instead of just pushing product. With fall ads launching earlier than ever (remember the days of opening up September Vogue and experiencing new ads for the very first time) there are already several ads that impress us with their unique interpretation of their brand’s message. Take a look at our picks for most intriguing ads so far and be sure to share your selections in the comments!

Kenzo

The brand’s thrilling reboot continues with Jean Paul Goude breathing new life into the fall campaign imagery. Xiao Wen Ju & Simon Sabbah are connected in these cheeky reversible shots with a neon Kenzo logo flashing in the background. Goude’s image has instant visual impact and is a fun showcase for those cool Humberto Leon and Carol Lim designs.

Raf Simons
In case you had any doubt’s about Raf Simons’ ability to be subversive check out the striking new f/w ads by Pierre Debusschere starring Yannick Abrath. The impressive sculptural shots are a sight to behold, as is the corresponding campaign video that brings the imagery to life with beautifully abstract visuals.

Mulberry

The fuzzy-wuzzies from Where the Wild Things Are invade Tim Walker‘s fantastical ads for Mulberry. The ads otherworldly vibe is only heightened by the addition of fashion’s favorite pixie, Lindsey Wixson and Jane How‘s sleek styling.

Prada

All the things that made the show so memorable are served up with glossy perfection in Steven Meisel‘s ultra-luxe ads. Vanessa AxenteMagdalena FrackowiakMadison HeadrickElza LuijendijkIselin Steiro and Anne Vyalitsyna sport the dip-dyed extensions and gilded accessories with panache.

Louis Vuitton

Putting that one of a kind Louis Vuitton train to good use Steven Meisel shoots a cast of it girls for the brand’s fall ads.  Elena BartelsErjona AlaFranzi MuellerHedvig PalmJulia NobisMackenzie DrazanMagda LaguingeMarie PiovesanMarina HeidenRos Georgiou shine in those signature oversized hats.

Givenchy

It is hard to beat an ad with fashion by Carine Roitfeld, images by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott and a fresh cast including Stella Tennant, Joan Smalls, Daniela Braga, Stef Van Der Laan, Rodrigo Braga, Simone Nobili and Jarrod Scott. The Newest

Much ado is made of the so called “end of printed magazines” but new ones continually come onto the scene determined to become the next buzzed about style bible. We spoke with Matteo Greco, fashion editor and now editor in chief and fashion director of a dandy new Italy based men’s mag named, “The Greatest“.

MDC: How did you decide on the name of the magazine?
Matteo Greco
: We decided on “The Greatest” because we wanted an epic name. When in September 2011 we started working on the magazine the team and I were always thinking about the name, that we wanted it to be very strong. One day while I was working on 300 problems to be solved and I was thinking about that “the really strong name”, out came … The Greatest. When I proposed it to the others, they all were happy and I’m very proud of it now.

MDC: What do you hope will set it apart from other men’s publications?
Matteo
: In my opinion we have nothing less and nothing more than other publications. We are just different. I believe our magazine’s strength stands in our team: all talents who work for The Greatest #1 are so young. I’m 25, the creative directors and the art director are less than 30, the fashion coordinator is 23 and our editor is 28. There’s not many magazines with a team so young. We tried to represent our kind of man, elegant and sophisticated. The magazine is different from others in that we don’t have fashion news or long and boring articles. The articles that are in there for this issue have the main theme as “Il Mediterraneo” (The Mediterranean”).

MDC: We see that you interview 2 rising Italian designers and that many of the teams that worked on the stories are Italian? Will that be a focus or is that just for this issue?
Matteo:
Fabio Quaranta and Christian Pellizzari are two rising stars. I really love them because they have a beautiful sartorialist cut and their work is always elegant, young and cool. And they are Italian. I love that the most. We wanted to explain that in our country you can find very talented young designers, photographers, stylists and other people really great in their work. We are young and we all work a lot, mostly without budget. So yes, I focused the magazine on the Italian culture.

MDC: Why Simone Nobili as a choice for the cover model?
Matteo
: Simone is such a nice guy. I really like him. He has a beautiful face, and perfect body. He’s Italian and he looks like a 50’s or 60’s Italian actor or musician like Marcello Mastroianni or Luigi Tenco. He has something so classical and yet something so modern. He’s a rising star, he did Dolce & Gabbana and Givenchy S/S 12 campaigns and he’s working a lot. When Giuseppe Gasparin sent me the pictures of the shooting, I looked at the portrait and I immediately called Elisa Anastasino saying “Good job! You have the cover. I love this shoot”.

Spring Awakening

Spring/Summer 2012 has proved to be a great run for a string of first timers for their respective houses; many of them also choosing new faces to front their campaigns for the season. How do you think these guys have fared?

Greg Nawrat for Gucci by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott | Alex Cunha for Bottega Veneta by Jack Pierson

While usually having a bevy of models in their ads, Gucci went solo this season with new and fresh faced Greg Nawrat. It also seems that Bottega Veneta had the same idea and tapped spring show opener Alex Cunha to star in their campaign, shot by contemporary artist Jack Pierson.

Running champs of the campaign season again, Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott explored two different sides with Giorgio Armani and Versace. Simon Nessman solidifies his place on our list in a sleek and simple setting while relatively unknown British face Ryan Barrett snags an only guy campaign beside the illustrious Gisele.

Coincidence that a pair of black and white ads feature new Belgians? One of our Top Newcomers this past season, Baptiste Radufe shows us there’s a new Baptiste in town starring in Yves Saint Laurent‘s sleek spring looks. Another one of our Top Newcomers, Florian Van Bael is set on the streets of Hong Kong shot by Alasdair McLellan for Emporio Armani‘s latest campaign.

Noah Mills for Salvatore Ferragamo by Mikael Jansson | Simone Nobili & Chris Moore for Givenchy by Mert Alas & Marcus Piggott

Classic good looks seem to be the key to success, and Noah Mills is proof that it’s true. Shot on location in Jamaica by Mikael Jansson, Noah continues the tradition of the luxurious lifestyle of the brand. On the opposite side of Salvatore Ferragamo, new faces Simone Nobili and Chris Moore hold their own in Givenchy‘s dark and moody spring ads by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott.

La Famiglia

The beauty of family is at the heart of both of Dolce & Gabbana‘s seasonal campaigns. Inspired by the sirens of Italian cinema Anna Magnani, Monica Vitti and especially Sofia Loren, Giampaolo Sgura shot ravishing Italian beauties Monica Bellucci and Bianca Balti for the womenswear images. Mimicking the feel of lighthearted classic comedies set in Southern Italy, Sgura captured Belluci and Balti as they enjoyed “afternoons at the beach, Sundays at home, family parties, the first boyfriend, and tender moments with the children,” it all makes for a lovely set of images that represent the traditional, yet sensual side of the Dolce & Gabbana spirit.



Mariano Vivanco
‘s menswear images continue the theme with gorgeous sepia tinted portraits featuring actors Giuseppe Fiorello, Francesco Scianna, Filippo Nigro, Thomas Trabacchi, Primo Reggiani and Chiara Francini as an especially elegant family. The candid and atmospheric photos feel vintage, but those exquisite D&G separates are completely modern.
