Vogue China celebrates its 5th anniversary with a stellar salute to Asian talent;  the magazine’s dual September covers feature the phenomenal cast of Liu Wen, Shu Pei, Ming Xi, Fei Fei Sun and Tao Okamoto in stunning crimson looks from Alexander Wang. The contrasting images by Peter Lindbergh & Daniel Jackson are strong, elegant and reflect the unique beauty of each girl while showing the verstaility of Wang’s designs; it is amazing how these looks go from classic to modern just with a quick change of hair and makeup.

Casting Coup

March 10th, 2010 |Posted by Betty

Ajak and Lais.

Givenchy has spoken yet again and the invigorating casting choices for Fall/Winter 2010 are just as incredibly inspirational as ever for modelwatchers out there. With all the recent talk of more diversity on the runway, to fully see a a show where people of color are included (and not just 1 or 2 looks) makes for a runway that is compelling and powerful and yet somehow so natural and seamless. Givenchy led the week with 17 of their 49 looks on some of the most beautiful faces of color, past and present. The dramatic palette of red, black and white looked stunning on Chanel Iman, Joan Smalls, Rose Cordero, Lakshmi Menon, Liu Wen, Lyndsey Scott and Shu Pei. New faces Ajak, Jiang Xiao Yi, Lais Ribeiro, Ming Xi and Sosheeba Griffiths shined as well as current campaign face Eduardo Calero and Givenchy favorites Paolo Roldan and Jonathan Marquez. The surprise choices for the collection? Top Japanese model of the early 00’s (and newly platinum) Ai Tominaga and 90’s star Ling Tan.

Gracie Carvalho by Chadwick Tyler. (story by Kristen Bolt)

Cushnie et Ochs have released their latest looks for S/S10 and it makes perfect sense this angular while feminine line would entail the talent of photographer-to-watch Chadwick Tyler. The combined aesthetic, photographed backstage at the recent show and styled by Nicole Vitagliano, results in a look book which is not only full of movement and provocative clothes, but also an array of some of the modeling world’s brightest young stars. The likes of Gracie Carvalho, Melodie Dagault, Rachel Rutt,  Shu Pei, and Taylor Kraemer by Chadwick deliver a powerful POV to the burgeoning brand.

Hello Gorgeous

Fresh off of her Prada exclusive, with her star rising fast Shu Pei is one of the most watched faces in modeling right now. Take one look at her radiant beauty in Vogue China and you can tell Shu is going to go very far. Jem Mitchell‘s luminous portraits are the perfect showcase for Alex Box colorful cosmetic artistry but it is Shu’s classically lovely face that takes center stage.

Prada’s New Groove

September 25th, 2009 |Posted by Janelle

If model casting has a Superbowl then it would have to be the Prada show. No show is as watched, critiqued or analyzed as Prada when it comes to casting. Model fans and industry bigwigs alike wait with baited breath to see just who Russell Marsh will pick and when the dust settles everyone gathers around the proverbial water cooler for a bit of Monday morning quarterbacking. Who was the opener? Who closed? Who should have been walking? For the love of god where is Sasha!?!?!

And so on, so forth.

Top row- Lindsey Wixson, Jacquelyn Jablonski, Sharon Kavjian. Bottom row- Lyndsey Scott, Kate Kosushkina, Shu Pei.

This time around the show had no shortage of surprises. If you could tear your eyes away from the hypnotically over the top clear plastic pumps you’d be quick to notice just how many first timers there were. Girls like Valerija Kelava, Mirte Maas, Nicole Hofman and Patricia van der Vliet all made stunning debuts. The talk of the town is of course Lindsey Wixson, whose impish features and perfect walk landed her the coveted girl one slot but Kate Kosushkina‘s ethereal ease closed the light and airy collection with a bang and who better to embody all that is light and breezy than the charming Miss Kosushkina!

Shu Pei and Liu Wen.

In a move that warmed my cold, jaded heart there was also a bit of diversity with Lyndsey Scott, Liu Wen and Shu Pei all walking and looking gorgeous in those Lolita pigtails courtesy of Guido Palau. It is wishful thinking to say that this could be the beginning of a campaign moment but after S/S 09’s blonde overload wouldn’t the ultimate cool move be a Steven Meisel shoot featuring this uber cool trio?

Cast & Crew

September 21st, 2009 |Posted by Janelle

What is the best way to spice up a plain ol’ fashioned studio shoot? The answer boils down to three words – casting, casting, casting. Take a look at Jason Kibbler‘s latest Vogue China editorial for a taste of what young blood can do to enliven a familiar concept. Madisyn Ritland, Bara Holotova and Shu Pei bring their A-game to the table and enliven what would ordinarily be just another white backdrop shoot. Take a look at the glare in Miss Ritland’s eyes in that final shot – that’s what its all about.
