First Look: Details’ Supermodels

February 4th, 2014 |Posted by jonathanshia

The big March issues are making their way onto newsstands this week, and now Details has entered the fray with a guaranteed winner. Those who complain about the dearth of models on magazine covers will surely be cheered by the sight of not one, not two, not even three, but ten of today’s biggest superstars shot by celebrity photographer Mark Seliger (New York: Management + Artists, Paris: Management + Artists). Casting director Edward Kim gathered Garrett Neff, Clement Chabernaud, Noah Mills, Tyson Ballou, RJ Rogenski, Andres Velencoso Segura, Mathias Lauridsen, Arthur Kulkov, Simon Nessman, and Sean O’Pry for an iconic group shot that expands across a triple fold out. Dressed by Benjamin Sturgill, the ten are shown in some of spring’s sharpest pieces, and the accompanying feature within finds them surrounded by the buzzing lights of a classic New York night. Vanity Fair can have Julia Roberts and George Clooney; we’ll take these guys any day. (Images exclusively for models.com courtesy of Details, for video and more, go to Details.com)

Spring Forward

January 29th, 2014 |Posted by jonathanshia

You wouldn’t know it from the frigid cold gripping New York City at the moment, but spring is just around the corner, and that can only mean one thing: new campaigns. After our roundups of the best Spring 2014 womenswear ads (here and here), we thought it was time to give the guys their fair due. Here’s our picks for some of our favorite men’s campaigns for the season, all of them featuring rich explosions of color to help us through these dreary, gray winter days.

tumblr_mz1q7argpR1r4ps7po1_12801-763x1024
Hugo Boss HUGO line
Last July, photographer Pierre Debusschere hit the Utah salt flats—home of the famed landspeed trials so powerfully illuminated in Rachel Kushner’s breakout 2013 novel The Flamethrowers— for Hugo Boss’ energetic, athletic younger label. Victor Nylander, Sung Jin Park, and Andrew Westermann are joined by Caroline Brasch Nielsen and Kasia Struss and the lambent, translucent hues of what look like shimmering mirages, add a soft tinge of glowing color to the blinding whiteness of the pristine sodium crust.

Jil Sander
The namesake designer may be once again dearly departed, but she has left her artistic, distinctly modernist fingerprints all over the house’s latest campaign, shot by David Sims. Ben Waters and Edie Campbell wear their sharp, graphic ensembles —distressed plaid for him and tangled florals for her against a faded background combining the strictest geometry with the soft delicacy of nature.

213814-800w
Kenzo
In their second collaboration with Maurizio Cattelan and Pierpaolo Ferrari‘s idiosyncratic art magazine Toilet Paper, designers Humberto Leon & Carol Lim have demonstrated their revolutionary talents extend far beyond their charming runway designs. A relaxed Devon Aoki perches upon a trout carried on Paul Boche‘s shoulders, both of them dressed in a soothing, swaying ripple print inspired by the surf of Leon and Lim’s native Southern California and lit by the harsh glow of red neon.

Patrik Ervell
After making a stunning campaign début with his stark black and white images of Max Von Isser in an overgrown field last Fall, Ervell enlisted up and coming photographer Daniel Sannwald (New York: Management + Artists, Paris: Management + Artists) for an appropriately luminous series of images that find Michael Lange wearing his sailing inspired pieces against the digitally enhanced shine of an impossibly rich and vibrant oceanic sunset.

Salvatore Ferragamo
The Italian house’s campaigns can sometimes have an anodyne feel of anonymous luxury to them, but Spring finds Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott (Art Partner) bringing a vivid pop of classic Modernism to their images. Stalwarts Sean O’Pry and Daria Werbowy bask in the radiant warmth of the sherbetcolored angles and columns that bring to mind the cheery, iconic designs of the Mexican Pritzker Prize–winning architect Luis Barragán.

Campaigns Continued!

January 17th, 2014 |Posted by Janelle

J.W. ANDERSON

Jamie Hawkesworth shoots a stark black and white campaign that highlights the youthful cast and the sculptural details of Anderson’s appealing spring collection. The clothes are in the forefront where they belong and the unique details seem even more impressive here than they did on the runway.

ALBERTA FERRETTI

Peter Lindbergh and Mariacarla Boscono reunite for Alberta Ferretti’s elegant spring images. Lindbergh’s masterful use of light brings the collection to life, highlighting the rich color and exquisite embroidery. Mariacarla provides a regal presence, particularly in that stellar shot with the emerald green gown.

HERMES

You’ll be hard presssed to find a more lush campaign this season than Hermes. The luxury house heads to the rainforest with a greenery filled and almost otherworldly series of images from Hans Silvester, a photographer known for his impressive fine art shots of natural settings and exotic locations. Diana Moldovan, Estee Rammant, Yumi Lambert and Sean O’Pry feature in Silvester’s captivating images.

DIOR

A great collection deserves a great campaign and Raf Simons’ expansive spring collection gets the royal treatment by Willy Vanderperre (Art Partner). A multi-generational cast of top models featuring Stella Tennant, Edie Campbell, Julia Nobis and Elise Crombez poses in Vanderperre’s contrasting series of photos – black and white portraits on one side and candy colored full body shots on the other – the better to show off those exquisite Dior pieces and this phenomenal lineup of women.

November 15th, 2013 |Posted by victoria

As the holiday campaigns roll in, H&M knows how to stand out from the rest, starting with an all-star cast shot by Alexi Lubomirski (Paris: Management + Artists, New York: Management + Artists): Christy Turlington, Doutzen Kroes, Sean O’Pry, Ryan Burns and Liu Wen—to name a few. But what really catches our eye is the mini film accompanying the campaign, which truly captures the holiday cheer that warms our hearts the most—full of family, friends, and fashion, of course!

First Look: Hercules ❤ New York

September 26th, 2013 |Posted by jonathanshia

The heavyweight Spanish menswear magazine Hercules Universal is no stranger to the long-distance haul, having devoted previous issues to far-flung locales like China and South Africa. The Fall 2013 issue finds itself a bit closer to home, focusing on the vibrant energy of the world’s capital, New York City. Several of the most talented photographers and stylists working today join forces in the eclectic stories, which showcase the beautiful Fall collections against the backdrop of the ever-changing city. Polish photographer Maciek Kobielski‘s stark black-and-white cover story features the Dane Mathias Lauridsen styled by Swede Zara Zachrisson and Darcy Backlar (Paris: Management + Artists, New York: Management + Artists), all of whom, like many in these pages—and countless immigrants before them— now call New York home. David Agbodji takes a star turn with an uptown elegance in Bruno Staub (De Facto)’s gorgeous feature styled by Miguel Arnau. Sean O’Pry brings his timeless cool to the city streets in Txema Yeste‘s contemplative story with styling by Francesco Sourigues.

The rest of the roster is equally strong, with newer faces like Dominik Bauer, Tidiou M’Baye, O’Shea Robertson and Louis Steyaert taking their places alongside seasoned pros like Clement Chabernaud, Marcel Castenmiller, Miles McMillan—and a few veterans like RJ Rogenski and Aiden Shaw—in features lensed by Giampaolo Sgura, Carlotta Manaigo, Ben Weller, Axel Lindahl, and Zachary Hadley. The rich stories offer small peeks into the city’s bustling diversity, proof that even a lifelong New Yorker can always find something new and exciting just around the corner.
