Spring Forward

You wouldn’t know it from the frigid cold gripping New York City at the moment, but spring is just around the corner, and that can only mean one thing: new campaigns. After our round­ups of the best Spring 2014 womenswear ads (here and here), we thought it was time to give the guys their fair due. Here’s our picks for some of our favorite men’s campaigns for the season, all of them featuring rich explosions of color to help us through these dreary, gray winter days.

Hugo Boss HUGO line
Last July, photographer Pierre Debusschere hit the Utah salt flats—home of the famed land­speed trials so powerfully illuminated in Rachel Kushner’s breakout 2013 novel The Flamethrowers— for Hugo Boss’ energetic, athletic younger label. Victor Nylander, Sung Jin Park, and Andrew Westermann are joined by Caroline Brasch Nielsen and Kasia Struss and the lambent, translucent hues of what look like shimmering mirages, add a soft tinge of glowing color to the blinding whiteness of the pristine sodium crust.

The namesake designer may be once again dearly departed, but she has left her artistic, distinctly modernist fingerprints all over the house’s latest campaign, shot by David Sims. Ben Waters and Edie Campbell wear their sharp, graphic ensembles —distressed plaid for him and tangled florals for her against a faded background combining the strictest geometry with the soft delicacy of nature.

In their second collaboration with Maurizio Cattelan and Pierpaolo Ferrari‘s idiosyncratic art magazine Toilet Paper, designers Humberto Leon & Carol Lim have demonstrated their revolutionary talents extend far beyond their charming runway designs. A relaxed Devon Aoki perches upon a trout carried on Paul Boche‘s shoulders, both of them dressed in a soothing, swaying ripple print inspired by the surf of Leon and Lim’s native Southern California and lit by the harsh glow of red neon.

Patrik Ervell
After making a stunning campaign début with his stark black ­and­ white images of Max Von Isser in an overgrown field last Fall, Ervell enlisted up ­and­ coming photographer Daniel Sannwald (New York: Management + Artists, Paris: Management + Artists) for an appropriately luminous series of images that find Michael Lange wearing his sailing­ inspired pieces against the digitally enhanced shine of an impossibly rich and vibrant oceanic sunset.

The Italian house’s campaigns can sometimes have an anodyne feel of anonymous luxury to them, but Spring finds Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott (Art Partner) bringing a vivid pop of classic Modernism to their images. Stalwarts Sean O’Pry and Daria Werbowy bask in the radiant warmth of the sherbet­colored angles and columns that bring to mind the cheery, iconic designs of the Mexican Pritzker Prize–winning architect Luis Barragán.

First Look: Americanarama

V Magazine‘s trip through American’s summer past times makes a pit stop in tawdry territory in Sebastian Faena‘s neon tinted story, Americanarama. When you have the most pristine of all the pristine blonde models, Carolyn Murphy dressed up in leopard print spandex and 80s mall perm, you know that V’s tongue is planted firmly in cheek. This is a knowing wink to the kind of kitsch 80s culture that brought us hair bands and acid-washed jeans. Nicola Formichetti‘s styling is over the top yet authentic – admit it, you knew a girl back in Tallahassee who would have been all over that tie-dye, leopard print Salvatore Ferragamo pantsuit.

Spring Awakening

Spring/Summer 2012 has proved to be a great run for a string of first timers for their respective houses; many of them also choosing new faces to front their campaigns for the season. How do you think these guys have fared?

Greg Nawrat for Gucci by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott | Alex Cunha for Bottega Veneta by Jack Pierson

While usually having a bevy of models in their ads, Gucci went solo this season with new and fresh faced Greg Nawrat. It also seems that Bottega Veneta had the same idea and tapped spring show opener Alex Cunha to star in their campaign, shot by contemporary artist Jack Pierson.

Simon Nessman for Giorgio Armani by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott | Ryan Barrett for Versace by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott

Running champs of the campaign season again, Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott explored two different sides with Giorgio Armani and Versace. Simon Nessman solidifies his place on our list in a sleek and simple setting while relatively unknown British face Ryan Barrett snags an only guy campaign beside the illustrious Gisele.

Coincidence that a pair of black and white ads feature new Belgians? One of our Top Newcomers this past season, Baptiste Radufe shows us there’s a new Baptiste in town starring in Yves Saint Laurent‘s sleek spring looks. Another one of our Top Newcomers, Florian Van Bael is set on the streets of Hong Kong shot by Alasdair McLellan for Emporio Armani‘s latest campaign.

Noah Mills for Salvatore Ferragamo by Mikael Jansson | Simone Nobili & Chris Moore for Givenchy by Mert Alas & Marcus Piggott

Classic good looks seem to be the key to success, and Noah Mills is proof that it’s true. Shot on location in Jamaica by Mikael Jansson, Noah continues the tradition of the luxurious lifestyle of the brand. On the opposite side of Salvatore Ferragamo, new faces Simone Nobili and Chris Moore hold their own in Givenchy‘s dark and moody spring ads by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott.

Dressed to Kill

Natasa Vojnovic‘s skill in front of the camera is legendary and she brings her all to the pages of Tush with a striking cover/editorial by Txema Yeste. Wearing menswear inspired pieces from 3.1 Phillip Lim, Salvatore Ferragamo and Stella McCartney, Natasa poses and preens in leather jackets and tailored suiting. Bernat Buscató‘s inventive styling gives Natasa plenty to work with wardrobe wise, but the attitude she brings to each shot is all her own.
