The Look of Ryan McGinley

December 10th, 2012 |Posted by Janelle

Ryan McGinley‘s evolution from downtown documentarian, to creator of slick fashion imagery has been one of the most interesting progressions in recent memory. The worlds of art photography and fashion photography have always had a bit of overlap, but in recent years the lines have blurred, with talented photographers moving between boundaries with ease and creating work that satisfies the tenants of either style. McGinley has always had a knack for capturing his subjects at their most unfiltered, whether that means a candid snap of a skateboarder, a hedonistic nude shot in the upstate wilds, or an elegant portrait of a top model or celebrity. There is always something unguarded and fresh about his images that makes them memorable and sets them apart. The dreamy scenarios and saturated colors that dominate his fashion work, make his pictures among the most compelling contributions to magazines of late. Take a look back through is work and see why we’re wild for the McGinley take on things.

Striking A Chord

February 8th, 2012 |Posted by Janelle

This season has been full of striking ads and the latest batch doesn’t disappoint when it comes to arresting visuals.

ALEXANDER McQUEEN
Ph. David Sims | Stylist: Camilla Nickerson

McQueen goes angelic for S/S with Zuzanna Bijoch posing in a heavenly Sims shot that calls to mind classic religious imagery.

CELINE
Ph. Juergen Teller

Juergen’s ads for Celine are instantly recognizable, but throw in the all star cast of Marie Piovesan and Stella Tennant and you have the makings of an unforgettable ad.

PRABAL GURUNG
Ph. Daniel Jackson | Stylist: Tiina Laakkonen | Hair: Didier Malige | Makeup: Hannah Murray

Is there anything Candice Swanepoel can’t do? The South African beauty pulls off dark hair and some serious yoga poses in the debut ads for Prabal’s label. Those stunning violet dresses from the show have never looked better.

EDUN
Ph. Ryan McGinley | Models: Bradley Soileau, Charlotte Free, David, Dempsey Stewart, Ehren Dorsey, and Herieth Paul

Butterflies float across the page in Ryan McGinley’s ethereal shots for Edun. The soft colors and cast of ultra-cool newcomers makes this shoot memorable.

Dog Day Afternoon

June 24th, 2010 |Posted by Betty

Ryan McGinley and his subversive self takes the Californian beauty, Estee Lauder supermodel Carolyn Murphy and throws things at her: bottles, bowls and dog kisses. The Nowness’ exclusive film, with makeup by James Kaliardos, styling by Jay Massacret and golfish strewn hair by Kevin Ryan is a tribute to fashion as art and fun. Ms Murphy doesn’t take herself too seriously all while still looking gorgeous, which shows why she’s still at the top of her game. Go watch the short film now

Read the interview with Carolyn where she reveals how they tempted the dog.

The Return of the Man

January 8th, 2010 |Posted by Betty

Cory Bond by Mariano Vivanco for Cesare Paciotti S/S 10

V Magazine‘s new size issue is generating much discussion making us examine our views on female models’ beauty in relation to their size. But what about the men? Two who light us up right now are Cory Bond and AJ Abualrub. Cory, at 32 and looking better than ever, plays the sexy foil to Isabeli Fontana in the Cesare Paciotti campaign.  AJ, last spring’s striking Calvin Klein face fronts this season’s Levi’s campaign by Ryan McGinley exuding a very panther-like energy. Both campaigns revel in their subjects’ utter masculinity and the fact that these are definitely men, not boys. We personally love this embrace of the manly man…. do you?

Fast As You Can

July 27th, 2009 |Posted by Janelle

It takes a fresh voice to bring something new to the world of campaigns and this season Ryan McGinley is doing just that. While his work on the Stella McCartney campaign is ever-so-slightly overshadowed by the presence of those cartoon animals, the photographer’s playful style comes to the forefront with his work for Missoni. The F/W campaign featuring the luminous Hanne Gaby Odiele, speeding by on the back of a pickup truck is fast paced, colorful and filled with energy. Just the shot in the arm campaign season needed.

Think Different

July 22nd, 2009 |Posted by Janelle

F/W campaigns keep coming and they seem to be getting more and more creative. Big brands are going for the unusual in an effort to grab our attention and it might just be working. Willy Vanderperre‘s stark shots for Jil Sander show a very different side of Natasha Poly and Arthur Daniyarov. The haunting pictures build on the theme from last season but the shots of color and Natasha’s bold hair make them even eerier.

The award for the most adorable campaign this season has got to go to Stella McCartney‘s Bambi themed F/W ads. Doe-eyed beauty Sigrid Agren joins a cast of familiar Disney favorites in Ryan McGinley‘s wooded forest. Cartoon animals are the last thing one would expect from a luxury ad but given Stella’s love of wildlife and the collection’s cozy look it all comes together.

Andres Velencoso Segura is very tall and Kylie Minogue is so very short but they are a totally cute couple.

Uh, hello, young aspiring actors and models… Read about Harry Potter’s Daniel Radcliffe and his interview with an 11 year old reporter and take lessons on being a true star in our book: being classy and kind.

Of the big American fashion mags, it looks like the only model cover will be Kate Moss for W Magazine and former model Charlize Theron for American Vogue. Sad. Click here for the other blondes.

Supermodel baby bump watch… first Heidi Klum, then Adriana Lima, possibly Gisele Bundchen and now Karolina Kurkova. There is something in the VS water.

Tragic news… Dash Snow, artist and fashion world denizen passes away this week. Our hearts go out to his family and especially his young daughter.

For our young feminist models, there’s a new teen blog out there!

In big picture news, iconic designer Issey Miyake talks for the first time of surviving the nuclear bomb dropped on Hiroshima. Why now? He was inspired by Obama’s speech in Prague.

They’re already talking about Spring/Summer 2010 campaigns! Pringle! Tilda Swinton! Ryan McGinley! Click here to read more.

Brana Wolf beautifully styles the latest looks in Bazaar and makes it totally wearable.

Ponyryder hits another out of the ballpark, this time with a chat with top model Toni Garrn.
