Just One Look – YSL

January 18th, 2012 |Posted by Janelle

Every year there are pieces that become repeat offenders: out of the hundreds of looks presented each season a few manage to monopolize editorial space and show up in just about every magazine. When you see the same piece in different images the importance of styling, hair & makeup really becomes evident – one wrong element and the clothes can look unappealing.

Lately we’ve been noticing a very chic Yves Saint Laurent coat popping up in editorial after editorial, looking different in each picture.  Made of “pale green lace jacquard with black cornelly embroideries” the coat was look one during the spring / summer show and looked pretty fetching on Kasia Struss. In the magazines the same look takes on a variety of guises: in the pages of Vogue Italia it turns into a harlequin costume for Querelle Jansen, while Harper’s Bazaar uses it as a retro topper for a blonde Bette FrankeW Magazine focuses on the graphic print with a black and white shot and some serious eye makeup on Cara Delevingne, while Elle goes in a flamboyant direction placing it on top of a red satin bra and a knit skirt from Chloe.

Bits & Bytes: The Next Gen

November 2nd, 2011 |Posted by Betty

Only in fashion can a boy in Ksubi shorts hang out with a girl dressed in a Burberry coat. Love this story by Thomas Cooksey for Contributing Editor, styled by Kim Howells for Contributing Editor. With the amazing Harry Goodwins and Stephanie Rad.

Who doesn’t love Azzedine Alaïa? Well, we know one editrix who doesn’t but everyone else certainly does. Read his interview with Style.com’s Dirk Standen.

Artist Jirka Väätäinen recreates Disney princesses. Who thinks Sleeping Beauty looks like Lara Stone meets Emily Baker?

One of our favorite runway coaches, Mac Folkes creates this really cool magazine that shows us why print is still so very viable.

Watch former Prada campaign face, Rasa Zukauskaite tongue twisting in her native Lithuanian.

Obsessed with Florence Welch and her work with Chanel. Watch the backstage video of the S/S 12 show with Florence’s amazing voice.

In the 80’s and 90’s Carré Otis was one of the original supermodels. Her new book, Beauty Disrupted,  details her battles with anorexia, drug addiction, violence, suicide, domestic violence and rape by the owner of her agency, Gerald Marie. I hope that other models will not have to face the same sad and tragic events Carré dealt with.

Bits & Bytes Model Edition: Through Rasa’s eyes

October 27th, 2010 |Posted by Betty

Backstage this fall through the eyes of the beautiful Rasa Zukauskaite, the photos she shot only on theO2W.

The state of the modeling industry and the new word that everyone else will once again co-opt, by the Imagist.

You know you want to see VMan’s‘s exclusive sneak peeks from the new issue just for models.com, 3 more Powerhouse agencies which include some gorgeous naked Brazilian men. VMan is out on newsstands, November 11th.

Baptiste Giabiconi is pretty adorable as he talks Ponyryder about his new single and the importance of giving back to society. We see why he is Karl’s favorite from this interview.

Lara Stone wins her lawsuit against Playboy. In an industry where models don’t have that many rights, we love that a model scores the win.

Sarah Ziff‘s documentary, Picture Me, on the darker side of the modeling industry, is causing quite a stir..

Lula Magazine who always features the coolest new girls, celebrates 5 years. Dazed Digital talks to founder and E-I-C Leith Clark who states, “I made a magazine of women looking at women, without that competitiveness and that hard edge that we think we need as we get older.”

Helena Christensen and David Gandy join David Bailey’s son, Fenton, in a new short film.

From the creation of bespoke Burberry trenches designed by tastemakers like Maggie Cheung and Anna Dello Russo, to limited edition shoes from Louboutin and Kirkwood, the special goodies created in honor of the anniversary are as cutting edge as possible and it is all for a good cause, with proceeds benefiting UNICEF. A Star is Born

March 26th, 2010 |Posted by Janelle

Rasa Zukauskaite takes to the pages of Numero with an editorial that pays tribute to Hollywood’s golden era. Luciana Val & Franco Musso shoot the edgy beauty as an ingenue on set and give Rasa the chance to play a host of heroines: from classic Hitchcock damsel, to sixties siren. Perfection!

Lady Flash

Solve Sundsbo‘s perspective on fashion has always been 100% original, so when he crafts a love story it is guaranteed to be something different. Karmen Pedaru and Rasa Zukauskaite, star in Sundsbo’s Numero story ‘Blakes’ and the duo electrifies in each and every shot: the unusual color effects on the pictures, paired with Karmen and Rasa’s posing ability, make for a standout story.

Bits & Bytes: Super Yasmin

October 2nd, 2009 |Posted by Betty

20

Yasmin LeBon. Ph: Philip Riches for L’Officiel Netherlands, courtesy of Elite New York.

I’m going to date myself a little now by saying that Yasmin was one of my favorite 80’s supermodels. Her incredible Vogue and Elle covers (jumping! on the beach!) were some of my most remembered visuals of that long gone era. It’s of course utterly thrilling to see her comeback, with her recent work with Vogue Paris, American Vogue, i-D and Wonderland. Here’s to one of the originals!

—————————————————————————————-

Karla Otto, PR powerhouse, Karla Otto sexy Gentlewoman?

Anja Rubik is a supermodel. And an avid yoga practitioner. Sign us up right now to get those legs

Here are more pics of the AMFAR event in Milan, including Giovanna Battaglia and Vladimir Restoin-Roitfeld, called “fashion royalty”.

For those who know Chris Rock‘s “Clear Heels” diatribe, you’ll find The Cut’s essay on Milan’s shoe of the season, pretty funny.

Aspiring photographers, get your work published in W, how COOL!

Balenciaga’s casting by Ashley Brokaw elicited some nice surprises for the week: Miranda Kerr (click here to see the 2 sides of Ms. Kerr, the sexy VS Angel and the transformation on the runway), Rasa Zukauskaite, Jenny Sinkaberg with IMG, former feed face Marlena Szoka, new faces Jacquelyn Jablonski, Mirte Maas, Patricia van der Vliet, Lisanne de Jong, Gwen Loos (Marilyn).

Balmain had Daria Werbowy in her only show (opening and closing).

Check out Cathy Horyn‘s conversation with Nicolas Ghesquiere backstage; listen to his wonderful French tinged English and of course take a look at his incredible collection: why Paris is the premier reasons they will always rule Fashion Week.

As for Rick Owens (which the Imagist loved!) he cast 4 of our favorite (and totally underrated) black models: Georgie Badiel, Kinee Diouf, Aminata Niaria and Rose Cordero.

Speaking of Miranda Kerr, she’s launching her own skincare line.

Stylist Melanie Ward‘s first collection, Blouson Noir (Black Shirt), sounds amazing.

Bad for your wallet, great for your closet. Style.com offers “Shop the looks”.

Style.com sits down with Gareth Pugh.

V Man and Showstudio are on the last legs of their male model search.

Speaking of V, how much do we love how they showcase the transformation of a fresh new Ford face, Sydney Roper. See the before and after!

Alexandre de Betak is quite a genius but now he’s officially approved by the Times who calls him “The Fellini of Fashion”.

Here’s the info for the Victoria’s Secret open casting this weekend.

Speaking of shopping: Isabel Marant, a favorite designer of the supermodels, will be opening in New York’s Soho. Isaac Mizrahi will be opening his first “shop” because of his psychic!

If you’re in Paris, go to the outdoor Vogue cover show, like Olivier Zahm did. You won’t be anywhere as fabulous as he, but you can pretend!

If you love the Rick Owens show, click here to see more dramatic black and white runway shots from Mr Purple himself.

“Every once in a while I’d feed one until it let me pet it, but it usually just ended up being more trouble than it was worth.” Um, not sure what to think about this, Rick Owens, but we still love your collection.

Fashion at the Vogue Party in Paris, celebrating 90 Years of Vogue Covers. See Mario Testino, Anja Rubik, Lara Stone and La Wintour looking tres, tres chic .

How cool are Greg Kessler‘s Model Morphosis for NY Times’ The Moment? See Karolin Wolter at Gareth Pugh.
