Spanish Influence

December 23rd, 2014 |Posted by Janelle

Dolce & Gabbana‘s seasonal campaigns always bring Sicilian culture to the forefront with Domenico Dolce & Stefano Gabbana transporting us back to the old country with Mediterranean scenes fit for Fellini. For Spring the designers merge traditions with a campaign centered around Spain’s influence on Sicily. Domenico Dolce‘s images utilize familiar iconography – matadors, mantillas and the elegance of flamenco, to create photographs that are steeped in tradition, yet appealingly minimal. There is an abundance of print, pattern and glitz (this is a Dolce & Gabbana campaign after all) but the pared down backdrop of patinated walls and rustic architecture keeps our attentions on the decadent clothes and beautiful cast. House favorite Bianca Balti is joined by Vittoria Ceretti, Blanca Padilla, Irina Sharipova, Travis Cannata, Xavier Serrano and Misa Patinszki, but the real scene stealers are the dashing bullfighter, José Maria Manzanares and a trio of grinning grandmas who bring a touch of whimsy to every shot they appear in.

Miami Heat

Vogue Paris hits the road again, exploring the fashion scene of South Florida with an all Miami issue featuring Cameron Russell on the front page. Shot by Mario Testino (Art Partner) the cover features Cameron sporting larger than life hair by Oribe and a smoky eye courtesy of Yadim (Art Partner) all while giving a look of pure power to the camera. With her classic good looks and smoldering sensuality Cameron calls to mind the classic supermodels, but it’s her world class intelligence that truly sets her apart as a cover subject.

A Tale of Two Kates

November 2nd, 2012 |Posted by Janelle

Lately it seems like everyone has an opinion on Kate Upton and usually it is a strong one. There are those who say she’s bringing classic curvaceousness back to fashion, those who find her nouveau-pinup schtick grating and of course there are her legions of adoring fans. Fortunately, the only opinions that matter at the end of the day are those of the photographers, stylists and editors who keep falling under her spell. The latest Uptonite is of course Steven Meisel, a man who knows a thing or two about what makes a model great. Meisel features Kate’s ample charms in the latest issues of Vogue Italia and American Vogue, a feat that would be a coup for any model, but for Upton it takes on a special signifigance. Love her or hate her she’s sticking around and is going to be a part of some beautiful imagery.

Speaking controversial Kates, the one and only Kate Moss surfaces on the cover of Vanity Fair looking resplendent in new shots from Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott. It is rare for VF to feature living celebrities on their covers, but that is a testament to Moss’ enduring crossover appeal – even those with no interest in fashion know the legend and mystique that is Kate. Odds are that many of those same people will be lining up to find out more about Miss Moss when her autobiography / picture tome hits bookstores. Kate has always maintained an air of mystery (this is the woman who famously gave one word answers in a post-scandal interview) but she sets the record straight on certain subjects in VF, which makes this a must read.

Super Modern

June 19th, 2012 |Posted by Janelle

It is not every day you see fashion models on the cover of a major American magazine. Actors, musicians and even omnipresent reality stars have usurped models on US mag covers and few publications understand that the general public might be interested in seeing someone fashionable and beautiful on their glossies, instead of just getting a glimpse of the latest celeb with a movie to pimp.

As a consumate leader W Magazine always goes off the beaten path and creates stunning imagery – case in point, the latest covers shot by Steven Meisel and starring budding supers Joan Smalls and Karlie Kloss. The larger than life hair by Oribe, the glowing skin courtesy of Pat McGrath and stunning styling by Edward Enninful, it all combines to create a look that is bold and larger than life – echoing the classic Avedon images of of the original supers from years past. Add to this a charming article that show’s both young women are more than just pretty faces and you have the makings of a must buy issue.

Hip Pop

Stepping behind the camera and serving as photographer, legendary stylist Carlyne Cerf De Dudzeele shares her vivid vision with Vogue Japan in a splashy editorial styled by Sissy Vian. The story features all the hallmarks of Cerf De Dudzeele’s work; over the top hair, vintage Versace and a kind of bold bravado that calls for equally outlandish ensembles. Lindsay Ellingson, Simon Nessman and Vika Falileeva work it in ombre coifs by Oribe and a selection of BalmainDolce & Gabbana and vintage, that makes Anna Dello Russo’s outfits look tame by comparison.
