Guerrilla Girl

April 2nd, 2012 |Posted by Janelle

Considering the complex (and often antagonistic) relationship between the fashion industry and rights issues like human trafficking and fair labor, the idea of a luxury freedom fighter is a bit of an oxymoron. Not that you can’t fight for equality while wearing Celine pumps, but real life rarely offers such opportunities.

Of course that has never stopped fashion from, editorializing the fantasy of guerilla girls dressed in the season’s latest trends. V Spain serves up an intriguing take on the theme with a slick story shot by Nathaniel Goldberg and featuring a series of chic pieces from Margiela, Ralph Lauren and of course Celine all chosen by Gillian Wilkins. The images present a vision of well dressed rebellion and are dedicated to “all the courageous women who defend their ideals. They are masters of their own destiny, their voices songs that celebrate the beauty of freedom.”

Beautiful words, but how do you feel about the pictures? Sporting perfectly tilted berets and wildly hair coiffed by Shon, Edita looks like exactly what she is – a stunning top model playing dress up in revolutionary drag. In some pics it works, especially when she gives that powerful gaze, but even with a dagger in hand or holding down a semi-automatic, she still seems wildly out of place. Perhaps that is intentional – we can’t help but get some Patty Hearst, gun wielding socialite vibes in a couple shots. Let us know what you’re getting from this story in the comments.

Britt Pop

January 11th, 2011 |Posted by Janelle

Nathaniel Goldberg and Marie Chaix create and ode to black and white patterned looks with a clean studio shoot featuring Britt Maren. With her edgy platinum blonde and spiky crop Britt looks right at home in the streamlined designs from Jil Sander, Cerruti and Proenza Shouler; the unexpected styling (black Louboutin flats and ripped hose complete the look) and Britt’s graceful poses make the simple story stand out.

Tati Cotliar takes to the pages of Numero with a subtly chic story by Nathaniel Goldberg; the Argentinian beauty brings her laid back style to each picture and looks at home in the autumnal themed images. Samuel Francois‘ soft styling serves to enhance the dreamy and carefree mood of the editorial and all those cozy knits and little jackets look just right on Tati.

Man Oh Man

July 16th, 2010 |Posted by Betty

Let’s not forget some of our favorite men coming out this fall. Man of the season Oleg Antosik cuts a striking figure for cK Calvin Klein by Fabien Baron. The always in demand Sean O’Pry headlines a stellar and sophisticated cast of Mathias Bergh, Jake Davies and hot newcomer Corey Baptiste in a debonair DKNY Men campaign by Nathaniel Goldberg. You’ll be seeing much more of Nikola Jovanovic come fall, here’s a classic image of him by Emilio Tini for Gianfranco Ferre Eyewear. Ian O’Brien has been a recent editorial favorite; he breaks out here this season with his first major campaign for Marc by Marc Jacobs by perennial MJ lensman, Juergen Teller. Terron Wood showcases his versatility and dynamic moves for artist/director Robert Longo‘s turbulent Bottega Veneta campaign. All so different yet so marvelous. What catches your eye the most?

The New Yorkers

Ladylike chic is au courant, even for the younger set. Case in point. Nathaniel Goldberg‘s DKNY’s F/W ads featuring 8 lovelies wearing the retro inspired look of the season. Giedre Dukauskaite, Lyndsey Scott, Liu Wen, Alyona Osmanova, Rosie Tupper, Diana Farkhullina, Daiane Conterato and Anna Gushina look like a page out of a 60s Vogue in their top coats and coordinated clutches.
