Steven Meisel plays with various styles for his Vogue Italia covers, but many of the best have a cinematic quality that makes them appear like stills from a motion picture. Meisel’s photography is energetic, richly detailed and often seems ready to start moving the moment some unseen director yells “Action!” The February cover of VI is a prime example of this a Dolce & Gabbana clad Lexi Boling may be the first thing to grab your attention, but each detail adds to the story. The sewing machines in the background, Mary Howard‘s comprehensive set design and even the blur of men moving all around Lexi. It all makes for a stunning tribute to fashion workers anchored by Marie-Amélie Sauvé styling, Pat McGrath doing makeup and Jimmy Paul handling hair.

Past, Present, Future

December 8th, 2014 |Posted by Janelle

Steven Meisel delves into modern bohemia with a striking December cover for Vogue Italia starring Jamie Bochert and Valerija Kelava. Styled by Marie-Amélie Sauvé, in floppy hats and folksy prints the duo embodies the free spirited days of yesteryear while sporting some of the latest fashions around. Inside the issue they’re joined by Hollie May Saker, Gabriel Marques, Harmony Boucher, Jackie Sanchez, Olivier John Rodgers, Olympia Campbell, Steffy Argelich and Will Lewis for an appealing series of shots that look culled from a late sixties scrapbook. Meisel ditches his sleek studio style in favor of soft, dreamy images mixed in with still life images by artist & filmmaker, Benn Northover.

Jamie & Valerija may have snagged the cover, but the model who steals the show is the adorable August Kruse Templer, who makes his Vogue Italia debut alongside proud mom Christina Kruse.

The In Crowd

July 8th, 2014 |Posted by Janelle

A gathering of cool kids will always be a fashion moment unto itself and Steven Meisel taps into that idea for the latest issue of Vogue Italia. Instead of an otherworldly setting Meisel enlists Edie Campbell, Lexi Boling, Amanda Murphy, Vanessa Moody, Julia NobisMeghan CollisonRJ King, Yuri Pleskun, David Axell, Geron McKinley, Dorian Reeves, David Alexander Flinn, Cameron Keesling and Tobias Hayduk for a pared down shoot that recreates the look and feel of a happening cafe setting. Mariana Santana and Anna Ewers join the fun in the accompanying editorial where models blow smoke rings as they sport heavy black liner and subtly 60s style coifs for a look that nods to the retro without being too referential. As usual Mary Howard‘s production design is flawless and the New Wave vibes are hammered home by Pat McGrath‘s makeup and Guido Palau‘s hair.

En Vogue

July 18th, 2011 |Posted by Janelle

No offense to cover girl Sarah Jessica Parker, but we like our American Vogue best when it focuses on models. Steven Meisel‘s winning feature in the August edition is a good example of why: featuring 10 of the best girls working, styled to the nines by Marie-Amélie Sauvé, the studio shoot is a gorgeous showcase for the best seasonal wares; a Celine blouse worn with a Fendi fur and a Dries skirt – pretty impressive combo.

The mix of favorite faces is also serves as a great way to illustrate issue’s Age theme. Kristen McMenamy, Karen Elson, and Audrey Marnay join newbies like Anais Pouliot and Fei Fei Sun and each shot looks great. That said, the range of ages could be even greater – wouldn’t it have been nice if Vogue had pushed the casting mix one step further and included Carmen dell’Orefice?
