Bad Girl Gone Good

November 4th, 2009 |Posted by Janelle

Lara Stone is the queen of rebellious and brazen sexuality. We’ve come to expect a certain devil may care attitude from Ms. Stone - how many Lara editorials feature the Dutch beauty wearing Balmain and smoking a cigarette? Perhaps that is why her sugary sweet cover for British Vogue seems so very fresh. Soft pastels, a frou frou dress and Lara looking almost (dare we say it) innocent. Leave it to Mario Testino to show another side of one of our favorite girls.

Three Times A Lady

October 13th, 2009 |Posted by Janelle

For most girls getting one Vogue editorial per month is more than enough but for Karlie Kloss it is a whole different story. Miss Kloss’ meteoric rise continues as she graces three editorials in the November issue. First up she is shot by Mario Testino for an autumnal story with actor Tom Sturridge, then Patrick Demarchelier captures her for an out of sight studio shoot featuring Marie-Amelie Sauves eclectic styling. Finally, Karlie displays the exotic wares of designer Alabama Chanin as part of  Norman Jean Roy’s CFDA nominee portfolio. While this just may be wishful thinking we can’t help but think an All-Karlie issue would be a wonderful thing.

Bits & Bytes: Super Yasmin

October 2nd, 2009 |Posted by Betty @ MODELS.com

20

Yasmin LeBon. Ph: Philip Riches for L’Officiel Netherlands, courtesy of Elite New York.

I’m going to date myself a little now by saying that Yasmin was one of my favorite 80’s supermodels. Her incredible Vogue and Elle covers (jumping! on the beach!) were some of my most remembered visuals of that long gone era. It’s of course utterly thrilling to see her comeback, with her recent work with Vogue Paris, American Vogue, i-D and Wonderland. Here’s to one of the originals!

—————————————————————————————-

Karla Otto, PR powerhouse, Karla Otto sexy Gentlewoman?

Anja Rubik is a supermodel. And an avid yoga practitioner. Sign us up right now to get those legs

Here are more pics of the AMFAR event in Milan, including Giovanna Battaglia and Vladimir Restoin-Roitfeld, called “fashion royalty”.

For those who know Chris Rock’s “Clear Heels” diatribe, you’ll find The Cut’s essay on Milan’s shoe of the season, pretty funny.

Aspiring photographers, get your work published in W, how COOL!

Balenciaga’s casting by Ashley Brokaw elicited some nice surprises for the week: Miranda Kerr (click here to see the 2 sides of Ms. Kerr, the sexy VS Angel and the transformation on the runway), Rasa Zukauskaite, Jenny Sinkaberg with IMG, former feed face Marlena Szoka, new faces Jacquelyn Jablonski, Mirte Maas, Patricia van der Vliet, Lisanne de Jong, Gwen Loos (Marilyn).

Balmain had Daria Werbowy in her only show (opening and closing).

Check out Cathy Horyn’s conversation with Nicolas Ghesquiere backstage; listen to his wonderful French tinged English and of course take a look at his incredible collection: why Paris is the premier reasons they will always rule Fashion Week.

As for Rick Owens (which the Imagist loved!) he cast 4 of our favorite (and totally underrated) black models: Georgie Badiel, Kinee Diouf, Aminata Niaria and Rose Cordero.

Speaking of Miranda Kerr, she’s launching her own skincare line.

Stylist Melanie Ward’s first collection, Blouson Noir (Black Shirt), sounds amazing.

Bad for your wallet, great for your closet. Style.com offers “Shop the looks”.

Style.com sits down with Gareth Pugh.

V Man and Showstudio are on the last legs of their male model search.

Speaking of V, how much do we love how they showcase the transformation of a fresh new Ford face, Sydney Roper. See the before and after!

Alexandre de Betak is quite a genius but now he’s officially approved by the Times who calls him “The Fellini of Fashion”.

Here’s the info for the Victoria’s Secret open casting this weekend.

Speaking of shopping: Isabel Marant, a favorite designer of the supermodels, will be opening in New York’s Soho. Isaac Mizrahi will be opening his first “shop” because of his psychic!

If you’re in Paris, go to the outdoor Vogue cover show, like Olivier Zahm did. You won’t be anywhere as fabulous as he, but you can pretend!

If you love the Rick Owens show, click here to see more dramatic black and white runway shots from Mr Purple himself.

“Every once in a while I’d feed one until it let me pet it, but it usually just ended up being more trouble than it was worth.” Um, not sure what to think about this, Rick Owens, but we still love your collection.

Fashion at the Vogue Party in Paris, celebrating 90 Years of Vogue Covers. See Mario Testino, Anja Rubik, Lara Stone and La Wintour looking tres, tres chic .

How cool are Greg Kessler’s Model Morphosis for NY Times’ The Moment? See Karolin Wolter at Gareth Pugh.

New Recruits

September 10th, 2009 |Posted by Janelle

VMan knows there is nothing quite like a man in uniform. Mario Testino introduces us to the very sexy Mike Derr in a series of camo looks that leave little to the imagination. If Mike’s chiseled cheekbones look familiar its because the Iowa native was not only a contestant in the Ford/VMan contest but also a former Model of the Week. With a stunning start like this we see big things in his future.

Bits and Bytes: The Mystery Man

August 11th, 2009 |Posted by Betty @ MODELS.com

chrisduffy
The mysterious young man in the Just Cavalli ads with Kate Moss is none other than FM Agency’s Chris Duffy. Though, used mainly here as a foil to Miss Moss’ larger than life presence, we feel this young British lad will be shining on his own in the coming months.

bb2
While our Ones2Watch section always has extraordinary new faces, today’s deserves a special mention. The Romanian Raisa and the German Daniel are most definitely ones to watch for the upcoming season.

Erin Wasson for Maybelline.

Quick! Go to VMagazine now and view the exclusive behind the scenes video at the Maybelline 2010 limited edition Calendar shoot as well as a chance to win the calendar and a one year subscription to V Magazine. Watch Erin Wasson, Julia Stegner, Kemp Muhl, Jessica White and new faces Emily DiDonato and Anna Wang vamp for photographer Kenneth Willardt.

Mario Testino and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, nuff said.

We love models that do a little something “extra.

In other Kate Moss news… if you haven’t already heard… Storm Model Management, her London agency, joins forces with Simon Fuller of American Idol fame.

If you look like Jamie Dornan, a tall drink of water if there ever was one, and live in Europe, you too could possibly be in the next Calvin Klein ads.

Did you know former Paris Vogue editor in chief Joan Juliet Buck was a child actor? We didn’t either.. She returns to the screen with Meryl Streep in Julie and Julia.

Bruce Weber fan? Check out the Sundance website for Bruce’s films and photos.

History Lesson: Ray Petri, one of the most influential stylists EVER, inspired a whole generation.

When artists become photographers, this is what happens… weirdly beautiful Matrix-y like images...

Bits and Bytes: The Young Americans, Farewell to Ms Sims

August 5th, 2009 |Posted by Betty @ MODELS.com

4

2 new young Americans on our radar. Mitch from DNA Models is only 13 years old. We can’t believe it either!

Charlotte from Photogenics is 16, half Indonesian, half English but from the LA area. Amazing lines!

From foster homes to the cover of Life Magazine, we salute the extraordinary and ground breaking journey of Naomi Sims, called the first black supermodel, who died this past week at the age of 61. Wise as well ( “There is nothing sadder than an old, broke model, and there are many models who have nothing at the end of their career,” Ms. Sims told The Times in 1969), she went on to create a successful line of wigs and cosmetics for black women under her name. Read the Times obituary and take a look at some pictures from her inspiring career.

—————————————————————————

See the Dior Homme campaign; it does, of course have a lot of gorgeous Brazilian men.

Also for our friends in Brazil, here’s House of Models’ interview with Bruna Tenorio (in Portugese).

For the making of Zara’s Fall/Winter campaign with Toni Garrn shot by David Sims, click here.

How do you get into the world of fashion? Teen Vogue’s new book explains it all. With contributions by the Kaiser: Karl Lagerfeld, Patrick Demarchelier, Mario Testino, Chanel Iman and Caroline Trentini, this is the book that we wished we had when we started out oh so long ago. Out on October 5th.

Vanity Fair’s best dressed list is out. Who made the cut from the fashion industry? Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, Georgina Chapman, Tory Burch, Candy Pratts-Price, Franca Sozzani, Natalia Vodianova, Bruce Weber, Peter Beard and Rachel Roy. Eclectic indeed.

Jenna (the no longer Anonymous ex-Model at Jezebel) has a great post on Anna Wintour’s early days of editing at NY Magazine. Worth taking a sec to see Anna pre-”Never a hair out of place”, along with the most genuine smile we’ve ever seen on her. (As you click through the gallery, make sure you read Jenna’s comments next to the picture).

If Karl Lagerfeld likes you, you will ALWAYS work. Take a sneak peek at his shoot for Purple Fashion with Baptiste Giabiconi, wearing heels, natch.

16 Years Old

August 3rd, 2009 |Posted by Janelle

Kate Moss landing the cover of British Vogue’s September issue is nothing new really - Kate is the stuff British Vogues are made of. The resilient supermodel has had at least one Brit Vogue cover a year since 1993. That means that when August covergirl Sasha Pivovarova was in her diapers, Kate was already on the cover. Before most Models of the Week or Ones 2 Watch members were even born - Kate Moss was racking up Vogue covers and as one of the most iconic faces in fashion she is sure to continue this pattern. Shot by Mario Testino in black liner and a statement necklace, Kate looks as great as ever on this September’s cover.

Here We Go Again…

June 30th, 2009 |Posted by Janelle

Old ideas are the new black when it comes to campaigns this season. Seems as though the recession has everyone playing it safe either with a concept we’ve seen before or an idea that feels redundant.

Michael Kors sticks to his guns with the same campaign we’ve seen from him ever season. Carmen Kass, Noah Mills and the perils of international celebrity. Granted, Mario Testino’s work is always beautiful and both Carmen and Noah are pros but wouldn’t it be nice to see something ever so slightly different? Couldn’t old school Hollywood glamour be represented in a way that doesn’t involve pseudo-paparazzi shots?

For YSL the 90s supermodel by Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin theme remains intact but this time around it’s the divine Christy Turlington. As cool as Stefano Pilati’s jet black getups look on the runway they seem a little flat in these pictures. Add to this the fact that poor Christy has to prop up a giant YSL logo frame while thrusting a handbag in our faces and you’ve got the makings of something awkward. Couldn’t they have gotten someone else to hold that thing up? Was there not enough cash in the budget for an able-bodied male model?(Edited to add: apparently he’s coming later; Andres Velencoso Segura will be joining Miss Turlington).

Finally, we have Chanel by Karl Lagerfeld, with darlings Freja Beha and Heidi Mount looking positively sapphic in their “Belle Brummel” hats and gowns. The idea is quite lovely but the drab sepia tones take away from the fact that the best parts of the collection itself were brimming with color and life. At the end of the day it’s all about the clothes…

What do you think about these ads? I’m all ears.
