Change of Guard

June 10th, 2015 |Posted by steven.yatsko

As soon as Vanity Fair Italy previewed cover images from Vogue Italia’s “China” issue the internet was abuzz over the non-Meisel round-up of photographers– confirming the whispers that the storied lensman would longer shoot every cover. For models, having a VI cover by Steven Meisel served as a badge of honor and a telltale of imminent visibility.  Steven’s famous partiality for beautiful women and inimitable eye has forecasted and launched numerous careers. So needless to say, his absences after holding the fort since 1988 is big news.

For the the “China” issue, Vogue Italia enlisted Craig McDean, Mario Sorrenti, Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott and Steven Klein to help carry the weight of Meisel’s absence, shooting a cast of established Chinese beauties Fei Fei Sun, Xiao Wen JuJing Wen and newer faces like Yuan Bo Chao, Fernanda Ly and Gia Tang. Each cover bears the visual thumbprint from this league of extraordinary photographers: McDean’s romantic evocations; Sorrenti’s audacious arrangements; Mert and Marcus’ high-styled narratives and Klein’s surreal interpretations. Whether or not it’s enough to fill the void, the praise-worthy selection of models by these modern masters in celebration of China certainly stands on its own.

Jackets Required

March 25th, 2015 |Posted by steven.yatsko

Fashion’s preoccupation with the seventies becomes the ideé fixe for W Magazine’s new Mario Sorrenti shoot that highlights Saint Laurent muse Grace Hartzel alongside a bleached blonde Jaime Ross. Melanie Ward adopts the glamrock eclecticism of Slimane’s LA playground and the story’s creed: “Jackets required. The rest is at your discretion” means there’s no room for staid convention. On that note, Ward styles the duo into disparate, beatnik-chic playmates mixing in plenty of Saint Laurent. Aaron de Mey adds a touch of mod focusing on bold lashes and James Pecis tousles their hair to appear as unattended to as their abandoned hideout. See the full editorial out on newsstands right now.

Balmaniacs

December 12th, 2014 |Posted by Janelle

Olivier Rousteing‘s vision for Balmain has always been about powerful, provocative women so it seems natural to see his Spring/Summer campaign filled with supermodels. Adriana Lima, Joan Smalls, Isabeli Fontana, Rosie Huntington Whiteley and newcomer Crista Cober join forces to play video games and eat cheeseburgers in Mario Sorrenti‘s (Art Partner) action packed ads for Balmain. Sorrenti never fails to bring energy to his images and this time around he makes the usually elegant cast engage in a little combat. If kicking and screaming supers isn’t your idea of a good time fear not, the subtler images have the beauties duking it out via Nintendo rather than clawing each others eyes out. The art direction by Pascal Dangin adds another layer of enjoyment, with patterns and colors perfectly coordinating even as the punches are thrown.

Amazing Grace

November 12th, 2014 |Posted by Janelle

With her delicate features and bright blue eyes, Grace Hartzel is one of the prettiest models to grace the pages of fashion glossies of late, but don’t let the doll-like beauty fool you Grace is a force to be reckoned with. Over the past few months Grace has been steadily racking up a slew of impressive editorials, working with some of fashion’s coolest publications and best photographers. With three editorials in a row in Vogue Paris, a chic only-girl story in the latest Interview Magazine and compelling shots in British Vogue all eyes are on Grace. Coming off the heels of an impressive season (and exclusive) season is an accomplishment, but following it up with editorial after editorial of quality is what makes a model a star.

Kendall Jenner is one of the most talked about models of the moment and with her upcoming feature in Love Magazine her star is set to rise even higher. Mario Sorrenti (Art Partner) shoots Kendall in sumptuous black and white and the end result is a portrait of the star unlike any we’ve seen before. Looking alluring in barely there lingerie, Kendall displays a powerful sexiness completely in line with Sorrenti’s seductive aesthetic. Reaction to the shoot has already been positive, with LOVE Magazine Editor-in-Chief Katie Grand offering high praise, “Kendall is not only one of our cover stars, but one of the breakthrough faces of the season, who I loved so much that I asked her to model in three of our stories this issue.” To her credit, Kendall appreciated the privilege of working with Sorrenti with a nod to one of his most iconic photographs, “I’d never worked with Mario Sorrenti, with whom I’d wanted to shoot nudes ever since that Kate Moss Calvin image of her nude on a sofa.”
