And God Created Liya

April 22nd, 2015 |Posted by Irene Ojo-Felix

It’s been a long time coming but finally Liya Kebede returns for the May 2015 cover of Vogue Paris. Shot by Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin, this issue marks the 13 year anniversary since the ageless goddess was last on the cover and the reunion is a sight for sore eyes.

It’s all about being bold this issue and Liya is shown on the cover modeling a print heavy jumpsuit from Dior‘s couture collection with a crown of curls set against a vivid red background. Inside the issue, Vogue Paris does a retrospective of its favorite shoots with the Ethiopian icon and features an in depth story titled Et, Dieu Crea Liya.

Throughout the years, Liya has also been a mainstay in publications like Vogue Italia, American Vogue, V Magazine & i-D and has worked with a bevy of photographers like Steven Meisel, Craig McDean, Annie Leibovitz, and Mert & Marcus. She has been the face of Estee Lauder and has been featured in campaigns for Louis Vuitton, Dolce & Gabbana, & Balenciaga. With her roles in movies like Desert Flower, The Good Shepherd, & Day of the Falcon she has been able to shown her wide range of creative passions.

Through her Liya Kebede Foundation she has used her extensive platform as an international supermodel to reduce maternal, newborn and child mortality in Ethiopia and around the world. She also uses fashion for the betterment of the World with her LemLem line which helps preserve the art of traditional weaving in Ethiopia and to offer work opportunities to local artisans.

Seeing Stars

April 21st, 2015 |Posted by steven.yatsko

It may be a mere coincidence but hopefully it’s something more positive- 4 eye-catching covers with some of our favorite black models of today. A shift is indeed rising: Joan Smalls on the cover of Lucky Magazine (normally reserved for celebrities), Binx Walton fronting Vogue Espana, Aya Jones gracing Numéro and Liya Kebede returning once again for a Vogue Paris cover (and the first black model on the cover since 2010’s issue with then new face, Rose Cordero). At any rate, we feel it’s a fantastic step in the right direction. With the return of models commandeering the covers of the major fashion glossies in the past year, we really hope that these four covers are but the beginning of this trend of including beauties of all colors.

The Warmest Color

March 2nd, 2015 |Posted by Irene Ojo-Felix

Louis Vuitton unleashes its latest Spirit of Travel campaign and the results are mesmerizing. Shot by Patrick Demarchelier, this season we arrive in a turquoise paradise starring the serene efforts of Liya Kebede, Julia Nobis, and Maartje Verhoef where they roam through the French West Indies adorned with the newest trunks and handbags that Vuitton has to offer. The pristine, azure waters and a late-60s, floral vibe from Nicolas Ghesquière’s Spring/Summer collection brings us out of the slum of Winter to a sartorial utopia.

Vuitton’s New Groove

June 25th, 2014 |Posted by Janelle

As one of the ultimate luxury brands Louis Vuitton has to take things just one step further than the rest. Case in point Nicolas Ghesquière‘s first campaign for LV, which boasts three of photography’s biggest names – Juergen Teller, Bruce Weber and Annie Leibovitz. Each superstar was given free reign to interpret Ghesquière’s fall collection and photograph some of his many muses. Naturally Liya Kebede, Freja Beha Erichsen and Charlotte Gainsbourg make appearances and newcomers Jean Campbell and Kirstin Liljegren star alongside the three Ghesquière vets. The striking Series 1 ads are a completely new direction for LV and serve to usher in the brands thrilling new chapter under Ghesquière.

First Look: Document No. 4

April 25th, 2014 |Posted by Matthew

documentj

Many magazines set out to bridge the worlds of art and fashion, but few compare to the engaging volumes Document assembles with each issue. After last fall’s Paul McCarthy designed cover, Document’s offering for S/S 14 continues to combine arresting editorials, bastions of the contemporary art world, and vital conversations to provide a comprehensive window onto today’s cultural landscape.

Seeking “spontanaeity, authenticity, and simplicity,” Document No. 4 addresses authorship with photographer Nan Goldin, architecture with Brazil’s Carla Juaçaba, and diversity with Liya Kebede and Bethann Hardison. Elsewhere, fashion crossovers Willem Dafoe and Erykah Badu discuss unique presence in the respective worlds of cinema and music, while legends of style Didier Malige (Art Partner) and Joe McKenna (Art Partner) collide to discuss fashion past, present, and future.

As for the editorials, Document showcases top models Malgosia Bela and Freja Beha Erichsen on two different covers that illuminate each versatile beauty’s standalone presence. Photographer Benjamin Alexander Huseby shoots Malgosia styled by Jodie Barnes in an array of guises that hit the season’s boldest trends. Exploring performance, photographer Collier Schorr captures Freja’s nuanced turn as a Method actor. The unstoppable Amanda Wellsh plays around before Alex Olson’s lens, Lily McMenamy styles herself for a profile of designer Simon Porte Jacquemus, and things turn surreal when Camilla Akrans (Stockholm: LUNDLUND, New York: Management + Artists) shoots Missy Rayder. Not to be surpassed in the months between biannual issues, Document and photographer Christian MacDonald nominate 17 of spring’s most promising faces, all sporting pre-Fall looks styled by Document’s Fashion Director James Valeri.

Be on the lookout for Document No. 4, on newsstands now.

Women on Top

March 13th, 2014 |Posted by Janelle

Who can resist the allure of a magazine dedicated to dynamic, intelligent and take charge women! David Vivirido and Francesco Sourigues, the forces behind Hercules Magazine unveil their vision for women with Vamp Magazine, a tour de force take on fashion dedicated to those who are unafraid to speak their minds and express themselves via the best in power-dressing. The cover tagline “Being the woman you’ve always wanted to be” offers a compelling call to action – it isn’t enough to just wear pretty clothes, a girl has got to take on the world with gusto. The founders offered a mission statement of sorts to Business of Fashion and described the glossy’s ideal reader in no uncertain terms, “Vamp is for women who want to get ahead, stamp their foot and make a statement.”

We love the sound of that and the look of the 6 incredible new covers, which feature an impressive lineup of modeling fixtures. Each cover star is an impressive woman with personality to spare, from industry standard bearers like Carolyn Murphy and Liya Kebede, multi-hyphenate Rosie Huntington Whiteley, campaign queen Karmen Pedaru and in demand it-girls Andreea Diaconu and Emily DiDonato.
