Class Acts

April 10th, 2013 |Posted by Janelle

When in doubt, go for elegance. The latest ad campaigns eschew gimmicks and rely instead on the kind of classic polish that never goes out of style. Bastion of uptown chic Tiffany & Co. enlists the new generation of top models in a stylish campaign by Michael Thompson that puts those fabulous jewels on superstars Liya Kebede,Liu Wen, Arizona Muse, Karen Elson and Doutzen Kroes. The stunning cast adds a touch of freshness to one of luxury’s oldest names, while Thompson’s graceful shots show the timeless appeal of gemstones.

Prada’s pre-fall shots are every bit as beautiful, but there is a hint of edge in Steven Meisel‘s minimal studio shots. Irene HiemstraAmanda Murphy and Vanessa Axente look pristine in Meisel’s imagery and the pared down collection provides a down to earth, yet wholeheartedly Miuccia take on seasonal dressing. What could be more classic than a whole lot of gingham and a good ol’ fashioned statement bag?

East Meets West

November 13th, 2012 |Posted by Janelle

Asia and its diverse cultures have long had an unmistakable impact on the industry, but in recent years the influence has been especially prevalent. The growth of the Asian market and the rise of a new generation of influential Asian talents has prompted designers and photographers to look East in search of inspiration. The F/W runways were filled with pieces whose details seemed cribbed from traditional Chinese, Japanese, and Korean fashions. Two fresh editorials showcase the season’s East Asian-inspired fashions in uniquely beautiful ways.

First Fabien Baron reinterprets the myth of the samurai in Interview with a striking and suitably stark story that owes as much to history as it does to larger-than-life, action-packed anime. Meghan Collison stars in Baron’s expressive fantasy and brandishes a katana as she poses in looks from Haider Ackermann, Gareth Pugh, and Issey Miyake. Karl Templer‘s styling prowess is on full display, even as he mixes together the perfect modern approximation of the samurai look. | View the full story on Interview.com

Vogue China‘s interpretation is no less elegant, but the approach is softer and sexier. Karim Sadli shoots the always alluring Liu Wen in pieces that focus on rich embroidery and detailed pattern. Set against the refined backdrop of an airy drawing room and featuring a host of Balmain, Proenza, and Dries van Noten selected by Alastair McKimm, the story offers an alternative imagining of this look. There are no well-dressed warriors or brandished swords, just a beautiful girl looking especially chic.

Behind the Scenes: Kenzo

October 9th, 2012 |Posted by Janelle

Paris fashion week was filled with beautiful moments du jour, but none were quite as cool as KENZO‘s safari chic collection. Filled with references to the original ‘Jungle Jap’ store, started by founder Kenzo Takada and an offbeat eclecticism that looked great on the runway, Humberto Leon and Carol Lim pulled off one of the season’s most inventive showings. Experience what it was like behind the scenes with this incredible video that takes you backstage and into the front row. Enjoy the incredible girls – Fei Fei Sun, Irina Nikolaeva, Ming Xi, Liu Wen, Jeneil Williams, Caroline Brasch Nielsen – the list goes on, the incredible makeup by Yadim and of course the clothes. You’ll feel like you’re right there enjoying a cookie in the front row!

The Look of Angelo Pennetta

April 10th, 2012 |Posted by Janelle

Considering how much of fashion’s excitement happens behind the scenes, it is surprising how few editorial images enter into reportage territory. Ask anyone working in the industry: half the magic takes place far away from photo studios, runways and sound stages. Seeing these moments captured is always intriguing, and Angelo Pennetta‘s work provides a bird’s-eye view into the realities behind fashion.

In British Vogue, Pennetta follows Karlie Kloss as she makes her way through Paris fashion week, offering a glamorous yet candid look at the model lifestyle. The pictures are high gloss, styled to a t, and showcase some of the season’s best clothes, but they manage to feel authentic and inviting. Who wouldn’t want to lounge around at the Hotel Crillon with Karlie?

Likewise, Pennetta’s shots of the effervescent Liu Wen‘s travels through China felt like an little peek into Liu’s private side. So often it is the photographer who meticulously crafts the vision a model is supposed to represent; viewing the work of an artist who lets the girls be themselves is a treat. Especially when the journeys he takes you on are so lovely.

U Magazine gets better and better with each issue. Their new cover, featuring Douglas Neitzke by Zee Nunes is a dreamy one indeed. For more from the issue go to U Magazine.

Fashion and photography

The one and only Bruce Weber, along with Nan Bush, relaunch the Bruce Weber website. If you know nothing about fashion, you will still recognize many of the iconic images for which he is responsible. Even more exciting is the prospect of Bruce and Nan stepping into the role of creative directors. Included will be “Bruce’s advertisements, selected short films, music videos and all-new WEBERSODES and short films produced specifically for the web”. This promises to be heaven.

Aww, we’re big fans of Costello Tagliapietra and so happy they finally got to tie the knot!

Vogue Italia wants YOU! Fashionista discussed Franca Sozzani’s new venture.

Modeling news

Style.com talks to one of our favorites, Liu Wen who shows us her view of the shows.

Calvin Klein is not only one of fashion’s legends, he’s a true game changer; here’s a short summary of his talk at Fern Mallis’ Fashion Icons series.

The very talented stylist and casting director John Tan chats with John Krupa who found his way to modeling, yes, you got it, right here on models.com.

Miscellaneous

We love that J Crew has gay couples in their catalog. I guess they would be considered the anti LL Bean.

If you happen to have $100,000 to drop, here’s a bespoke library from Assouline, super fabulous, right?

A tumblr suggestion from MDC’s Kevin, this truly made me laugh.
