Hip Hop Hooray

February 24th, 2010 |Posted by Janelle

V64 is just around the corner and Josh Olins provides a fun-filled editorial featuring Lily Donaldson and Liya Kebede. The entire affair looks authentically 80s: from the brightly colored, dance inspired fashions, to the boombox resting on a bench.

Project Runway

January 13th, 2010 |Posted by Janelle

Every month Steven Meisel comes up with another ingenious theme for Vogue Italia and this month is all about backstage : Meisel and Lori Goldstein recreate the energy and atmosphere of a runway show but not without adding in a hint of VI’s wry humor. As always the model lineup is impeccable with appearances by Agyness Deyn, Alla Kostromichova, Anna de Rijk, Anna Selezneva, Constance Jablonski, Daria Strokous, Freja Beha Erichsen, Gwen Loos, Hanne Gaby Odiele, Irina Kulikova, Iris Strubegger, Isabeli Fontana, Iselin Steiro, Jac Jagaciak, Jamie Bochert, Kamila Filipcikova, Kasia Struss, Kendra Spears, Karlie Kloss, Lara Stone, Lily Donaldson, Liya Kebede, Magdalena Frackowiak, Mirte Maas, Natasha Poly, Patricia van der Vliet, Ranya Mordanova, Rianne Ten Haken, Rose Cordero, Sasha Pivovarova, Sessilee Lopez, Sigrid Agren, Siri Tollerod, Snejana Onopka and Viktoriya Sosonkina.

Bits & Bytes: Holiday Edition 2009

December 29th, 2009 |Posted by Betty

happy-holidays
In true holiday spirit, Art & Commerce makes a donation to City Harvest. Watercolor by the incomparable Mats Gustafson.

—————————————————————————————————————

Modeling news:
For those of you who have been away for the holidays on some tropical island and are not obsessively checking the Internet every single day….. Gisele Bundchen finally names her baby.

In other “unless you’ve been under a rock or on a tropical isle” news, Tyra Banks is ending her talk show.

British Vogue highlights their 23 models to watch for 2010. Some are familiar like former MOTW’s Stephanie Rad, Keats Kolyasnikova, Frida and Heidi Rock. We love the new Portia and several other new fabulous faces.

In the on going process of adding slash to their job descriptions, Erin Wasson is rumored to start acting and Noah Mills is ALREADY acting. For those who might remember, we tweeted back in Sept about who was the top model rumored to appear in the new SATC 2… From MOTW to SATC in a mere 7 years, you go Noah! In other former MOTW news, Dolce & Gabbana favorite Adam Senn is supposedly dating Lindsay Lohan. Do what you will with that info.

Speaking of model/slash, Hyoni Kang‘s new store gets a visit by Style.com.

Jezebel’s Jenna highlights the sad plight of the industry when the unbelievable Lara Stone is considered “fat”.

Oh too cute. Coco Rocha and a gaggle of 5 year olds visit her agency.

Fashion and photography:
So sad, amazing brand PHI (designed by the amazing Andreas Melbostad) closes

OMG. You thought Vinoodh Matadin was hot now? Look at this NSFW picture from 1986.

Only because Lady Gaga was THE fashion influence of the year, check out this one man’s obsessive creation of 39 of her looks on Barbie dolls. Kinda nuts in a totally fabulous way.

2009 Lists:
Fashion Week Daily‘s Chic citizens of 2009… Here’s numbers 6-10and 1-5.

Jezebel‘s top 10 fashion successes and failures of the year. They also have a pretty good list of their top models of the decade. We would have included Kate Moss who went from a mere supermodel to a model power broker with her recent deals with Topshop.

Contrast this with French Vogue’s 30 top models of the 00’s. All we can say is that of all the INCREDIBLE photos they’ve taken of Daria Werbowy (whose had 3 VP covers in the last year and a half), Anja Rubik, Gisele Bundchen and Lily Donaldson, they chose THOSE to represent these girls??? Congrats to Kasia Struss to making the list.. nice girls don’t always finish last!

Craig from Altamira who obsessively details the models’ streetstyle has some of his best dressed list of 2009.

Miscellaneous:
In the “I just get tired from reading this post” news, Derek Blasberg, just might be the hardest partying man of 2009. Check out these exclusive pics for V Magazine from Derek’s camera.

Some of our favorite agency Xmas emails: Luke Worral’s agents at D1 have Elfed themselves; this slightly creepy, culty video filled with boys and candles from the folks at Nine Daughters and a Stereo, the hilarious card below from the team at Ford NY‘s men’s division and the people at One Management who step in front of the camera for once.

To end the year, take a look at this gorgeous editorial, The 12 days of Christmas from American Vogue Dec 98 from the inimitable team of Steven Meisel and our favorite person in fashion,Grace Coddington.

Gaga for Givenchy

October 6th, 2009 |Posted by Janelle

Givenchy S/S 2010

Givenchy has become the Paris show to watch when it comes to eclectic casting. With its mix of re-discovered favorites, fresh faces and house staples there was truly something for everyone. Whether you’re a 90s model fan enjoying the welcome shock of seeing both Michele Hicks and Kirsty Hume on the runway again or new faces watcher charting the course of fast rising star Antonella Graef there was excitement to be found. Riccardo Tisci’s graphic black and white collection shone on each and every model selected but there were a few girls in particular that grabbed our attention.

Antonella Graef

Antonella opens Givenchy

While Antonella Graef (Top S/S 10 Newcomer) snagged the bulk of our attention with her second time opening Givenchy (she opened couture too) there were almost too many cool girls to count. Mirte MaasAlla Kostromichova and Jacquelyn Jablonski continue to book only the best shows and top 10 newcomer Frida Gustavsson‘s winning streak extended into Paris. Exclusives like the Elena Ivanova (WM Paris) and Nastya Karzan provided welcome surprises and Tisci favorites like Lily Donaldson, Iselin Steiro, Lakshmi Menon and Meghan Collison all made appearances – important to note given just how many established girls spent their S/S seasons away from the catwalk.

Girls of Givenchy

Gwen Loos (Marilyn). Emily DiDonato. Jacquelyn Jablonski.

One of the most continuously interesting things about Givenchy’s casting is that each season it manages to change our view of certain girls. Take Maybelline face Emily DiDonato for example. Pre-Givenchy and she’s the the definition of wholesome, All-American sexiness (witness OTM’s video interview with her)-  a little eyebrow bleach and matte lipstick later and she’s one of Tisci androgynously beautiful heroines. Same goes for Italian bombshell Bianca Balti and the sultry Elena Melnik. The way every girl transforms once they enter into Tisci’s world is really what makes this show as powerful as it is season after season.
