Donatella’s Stars

November 25th, 2013 |Posted by Janelle

Lady Gaga‘s surprisingly understated ad for Versace accessories is one of the most talked about campaigns of the moment, but the Versace love affair with fame goes way back. Every few seasons Donatella enlists a star from the world of film, tv or music to pout and preen in the brand’s memorable campaigns and over the years they’ve racked up an impressive array of luminaries. Versace will always be synonymous with the supermodel era but they’re equally known for their connection to the world of celebrity. Star power has always been one of the driving forces behind Versace’s appeal on and off the red carpet – take a look back at some of the famous faces to front ads for the legendary label.

Deja Vu : Food for Thought

April 12th, 2012 |Posted by Janelle

Richard Burbridge‘s latest over the top story for New York Times Magazine celebrates the season’s candy colored dresses & bold fruit prints, with a festive food meets fashion series of images. The idea is simple – take the plum prints on a Dolce & Gabbana dress and serve them with a side of fruit salad for good measure – but the magic is all in the execution. Robbie Spencer‘s styling on this story is nothing short of amazing – though we do wonder if he was the one picking up the cart at Whole Foods in addition to selecting the stellar designer looks. Hanne Gaby Odiele and Julia Nobis bring the concept to life with animated posing and the occasional taste of sweetness.

The story got us thinking about all the other time’s we’ve seen fashion and food collide. Though we prefer our meals on a plate something has to be said for the unexpected art that comes about when you re-imagine what every day items can do. Have a trip down memory lane and see some of our  favorite food meets fashion combos.

There is a Dolce & Gabbana dress hiding beneath all that produce.

Even if you didn’t notice the lobsters, this would be an epic shot.

Viktor & Rolf‘s decadent designs get coated in candy – very fitting!

Artist Sung Yeon Ju‘s Wearable Foods series (2009-2010) featured clothing crafted out of materials like banana peels and slices of eggplant.

2010 Kirsi Pyrhonen wore lettuce as a fashion statement in images by Magnus Unnar for the Barneys holiday catalog.

Who can forget that meat dresses Lady Gaga wore on the red carpet & the cover of Vogue Hommes Japan in 2010 – also designed by Sung Yeon Ju!

Cintia Dicker delights in a dress full of M&Ms in Ryan Yoon‘s shoot for Virgine Magazine - 2010

And now for something you can actually put in your mouth. How about some Chanel & Christian Louboutin cupcakes? Prop stylist Lisa Edsalv and photographer Therese Aldgard collaborated on these and we’re petitioning Aaron de MeyKarl Lagerfeld to get them in stores.

Bits & Bytes: Envy-ious

August 4th, 2010 |Posted by Betty

The gorgeous Zoe Saldana behind the scenes on the set of her Calvin Klein Underwear Envy shoot. There are few actresses who have that crossover appeal when it comes to the modeling territory but Zoe for Envy is genius indeed! See more images from the campaign by Mikael Jansson right here. (images courtesy of Calvin Klein).

Speaking of Calvin Klein, the legendary man himself was at the ACRIA fundraiser this week, looking absolutely debonair with the one and only Daphne Guinness. Also at the event: former wife, photographer Kelly Klein and the rarely seen top lensman Steven Klein. (images Patrick McMullen, courtesy of CK)

Fashion and Miscellaneous:

Fashion’s Night Out, get the details here, it’s going to be fabulous!

We adore Edward Enninful, the masterful stylist for American and Italian Vogue. Read British Vogue‘s interview with him where he talks about with whom he would love to work. If you missed our interview with the incredible and humble Edward (can you tell we are fans), read it here now.

Who do you think are the most influential street style bloggers? Fashionista lists their favorites.

Read Dazed Digital‘s interview with Theo Stanley, cinematographer of the new Y-3 campaign.

We love Natalie Joos the super fashionable  casting director. Style.com obviously does too with their profile on her, check out if she thinks the trend towards “bigger” models will last.

You know, we obsess over Lady Gaga for her fashion daring and devil may care attitude but this is why we REALLY adore her… responding to hate with love.

Modeling News:

Fascinating. Frockwriter talks about the various issues surrounding Lara Stone‘s suing over her French Playboy pictures.

Freja is certainly killing it. Keep track of all her top work by her favorite fan, right here.

See how Rose reconciles her dislike of a certain fashion photographer with her love of Freja.

We don’t find suicides funny or artistic. And neither does Frockwriter. This gives us the creeps.

Made in Brazil loves Brazilian models and they love them right back.

What do you think? Do you think Volodya looks like a male Natalia Vodianova? He is Russian too of course.

See new face Johan Novarino (below) at Marion Vain. We love those Swedes.

Bits & Bytes: The D&G Quintet

January 11th, 2010 |Posted by Betty

21
The young men of the season’s liveliest party have been revealed. We recognize Thomas Hoefnagels, Sebastian Lund, former MOTW Vincent Dienst and Andrea Petri for D&G S/S 10 by Mario Testino. Readers, help us out with the 5th young man. (image courtesy of IMM Bruxelles).

—————————————————————————————————————

Modeling:
Lily Cole talks about the making of Dr. Parnassus.

I did a quick interview about the modeling industry for my friend, photographer Lara Rossignol. Lara is a true professional, having shot everyone from Johnny Depp and Liv Tyler to Jermaine Dupre.

She is not the Jersey Shore, that’s for sure! Model Jacquelyn Jablonski‘s on The NY Times Nifty 50.

Made in Brazil said it first.. Arthur Sales would be major… and here’s the first of much to come.

Fashion and photography:
Venetia Scott is one of our favorite stylists out there.. here is a fantastic interview she did with Ponystep. What an insight into her world.

Douglas Perrett‘s malendar (male calendar) is really too cute with some of the top up and coming straight male photographers, including Sebastian Kim and Dan Martensen. Buy it here.

Tsk, tsk.. just more tsk from us for Ms. Lindsay Lohan about her straight out copying of up and coming designer Jen Kao and her dress for Lindsay’s new line, especially as Lindsay was photographed wearing Jen’s dress a month ago. As my little girl would say: Not Nice!

Miscellaneous:
And in case you haven’t heard… Lady Gaga is the new creative director of Polaroid. If she can’t get our beloved Polaroid into the modern era, we don’t know who can.

In the NY Times’ story about MDC’s special preview of V’s size issue, one of the funniest comments was this person who called Karl Lagerfeld a “vacuous, vapid, old parvenu”.

Bits and Bytes: Multi Cover Mania

August 21st, 2009 |Posted by Betty

kateanother
Kate Moss by Craig McDean for Another Magazine. (for full story on the covers and Another Magazine’s Decade in Style, click here).

Joining in the multi cover party that V Magazine started with 4 Fall covers and the special edition V Magazine 19 cover bonanza by Paul Rowland, is Another Magazine‘s beauteous quartet of Natalie Portman, Vanessa Paradis, Kate Moss and Katie Holmes. Love Magazine also enters the fray with 2 covers, one of Coco Sumner (Sting’s daughter) and the other of young musician Alex Hartley. It looks like it’s never been a better time for readers with such a plethora of choices.

Amber Valletta, Kate Moss, Linda Evangelista and Lady Gaga for V Magazine.

————————————————————————————-
There’s always the next Kate Moss, but is this girl actually the one?

If you’ve ever met French model Vincent LaCrocq, you’ll know why he was picked for Alexander Wang‘s men’s lookbook. Completely swoonworthy.

When we want more black models in editorials, this is NOT what we were thinking of… Our own story on R’el and Melodie by Greg Kadel for Numero is also generating quite a discussion.

Annie Leibovitz, strange and sad story.

What is the future of fashion, modeling and the Internet? The Imagist ponders

September 10th’s Fashion’s Night Out in NYC promises to be big.. Mark your calendars now to meet supermodels, designers and photographers like Steven Klein and Annie Leibovitz. Click here for the official website.

How funny… the making of the Gucci campaign is preferred to the actual campaign.

Top model Sean O’Pry has been awarded the keys to his hometown city. Here’s a pic of him with his mayor.

13 year old style blogger Tavi is on the new POP cover…. and you are not.

Jessica White blogs; she talks about the ups and downs of her life. Besides the excitement of shooting for Sports Illustrated and Maybelline, she is frank about losing her money and the devastation of being sexually abused, this looks like a must read.

Speaking of all the calls for less Photoshopping… here’s Glamour Magazine‘s model with a belly and she looks beautiful!

Models go to the movies..Irina Lazareanu has landed the lead in the new Spike Lee movie! Agyness Deyn is also set to appear in a Kevin Sampson movie.

Kate Moss vs Scarlett Johansson, are we seeing double??
