If there is one brand that understands the importance of originality it is Kenzo, under the direction of Humberto Leon & Carol Lim the line has utilized innovative advertising and an off-kilter aesthetic filled with fun and hypnotic visuals. For fall the label enlists Toilet Paper Magazine aka the creative duo of Maurizio Cattelan and Pierpaolo Ferrari to create a kooky world filled with surrealist details. Fans of David Lynch will see nods to classics like Twin Peaks and Blue Velvet in Cattelan & Ferrari’s accompanying films and the campaign’s saturated images. When you take into consideration that Lynch designed the set for Kenzo’s fall show the homage seems fitting, but this cool campaign is more than a tribute. Guinevere Van Seenus and Robbie McKinnon bring the story to life with charm, making even the boldest patterns and brightest colors look just right.

The coolest girls in the game join forces for McDean & How’s tribute to splashy surf style. Sam Rollinson, Lexi Boling and Katlin Aas sport printed looks from CélineKenzoDior and more for a dynamic collage look that combines prints, colors and statement pieces in an exciting melange. For their part each of the girls looks nonchalantly cool pulling off even the most daunting runway pieces with complete ease.

Spring Forward

You wouldn’t know it from the frigid cold gripping New York City at the moment, but spring is just around the corner, and that can only mean one thing: new campaigns. After our round­ups of the best Spring 2014 womenswear ads (here and here), we thought it was time to give the guys their fair due. Here’s our picks for some of our favorite men’s campaigns for the season, all of them featuring rich explosions of color to help us through these dreary, gray winter days.

Hugo Boss HUGO line
Last July, photographer Pierre Debusschere hit the Utah salt flats—home of the famed land­speed trials so powerfully illuminated in Rachel Kushner’s breakout 2013 novel The Flamethrowers— for Hugo Boss’ energetic, athletic younger label. Victor Nylander, Sung Jin Park, and Andrew Westermann are joined by Caroline Brasch Nielsen and Kasia Struss and the lambent, translucent hues of what look like shimmering mirages, add a soft tinge of glowing color to the blinding whiteness of the pristine sodium crust.

The namesake designer may be once again dearly departed, but she has left her artistic, distinctly modernist fingerprints all over the house’s latest campaign, shot by David Sims. Ben Waters and Edie Campbell wear their sharp, graphic ensembles —distressed plaid for him and tangled florals for her against a faded background combining the strictest geometry with the soft delicacy of nature.

In their second collaboration with Maurizio Cattelan and Pierpaolo Ferrari‘s idiosyncratic art magazine Toilet Paper, designers Humberto Leon & Carol Lim have demonstrated their revolutionary talents extend far beyond their charming runway designs. A relaxed Devon Aoki perches upon a trout carried on Paul Boche‘s shoulders, both of them dressed in a soothing, swaying ripple print inspired by the surf of Leon and Lim’s native Southern California and lit by the harsh glow of red neon.

Patrik Ervell
After making a stunning campaign début with his stark black ­and­ white images of Max Von Isser in an overgrown field last Fall, Ervell enlisted up ­and­ coming photographer Daniel Sannwald (New York: Management + Artists, Paris: Management + Artists) for an appropriately luminous series of images that find Michael Lange wearing his sailing­ inspired pieces against the digitally enhanced shine of an impossibly rich and vibrant oceanic sunset.

Salvatore Ferragamo
The Italian house’s campaigns can sometimes have an anodyne feel of anonymous luxury to them, but Spring finds Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott (Art Partner) bringing a vivid pop of classic Modernism to their images. Stalwarts Sean O’Pry and Daria Werbowy bask in the radiant warmth of the sherbet­colored angles and columns that bring to mind the cheery, iconic designs of the Mexican Pritzker Prize–winning architect Luis Barragán.

The barely there makeup by Aaron de Mey and hair by Recine help, but the allure is pure Bundchen! Dressed in sleek seasonal styles by Balenciaga, Céline and Kenzo, selected by none other than Marie Chaix, Gisele looks every inch the supermodel.

Grand Voyage

Arizona Muse goes around the world for Vogue Russia in an elegant story by Tom Craig. Part travelogue / part fashion journey, the editorial follows Arizona through the streets of Sicily as she wears a selection of luxe yet casual pieces selected by stylist, Olga Dunina. Clad in pieces from Bottega Veneta, Kenzo, Ralph Lauren and of course Dolce & Gabbana, Arizona makes an especially elegant tourist. The accompanying video by Craig, with cinematography by Gus & Stella take the trip one step further with a beautiful exploration of one of the world’s loveliest islands.

We can always count on Tom Ford for an epitomized version of modern glamour and his latest campaign delivers with sleek shots by Ford himself of Karlina Caune and Simon Van Meervenne. Playing to his strengths the designer / photographer / director / provocateur creates simple images that focus on those decadent designs. Who needs exotic locations and complicated set ups when you have the beauty of those golden to the knee sandals and fringed shoes! Karlina and Simon look pretty damn good too, both models capture the slightly dangerous and oh so sexy vibe of Ford’s ethos.

Given the memorable way Wang presented his S/S collection’s glow in the dark dresses, we were expecting a campaign with flashing lights, or blinding neons from Alexander Wang. Never one to go for the obvious thrill, Wang enlists Steven Klein and Pascal Dangin for an evocative campaign featuring the Malgosia Bela. The beauty of these images lies in the artistic way in which the clothing is presented: with her body painted in white and the stark backdrop, Malgosia looks more like a performance artist than a model. As the Wang label enters into its next stage of development this campaign provides a dynamic and eye-catching brand message.


KENZO

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Kenzo’s F/W ads by Jean Paul Goude were arresting and upbeat – they even made our best of 2012 list and for S/S the saga continues with Ming Xi and Jester White picking up where things left off. We didn’t think it would be possible, but these ads are even more colorful and kooky than the first set.


AKRIS

Karim Sadli - Photographer | Anthony Turner - Hair Stylist | Hannah Murray - Makeup Artist | Alana Zimmer - Model

Karim Sadli shoots Akris’ understated S/S ads featuring Alana Zimmer. Akris has always been about luxury that whispers instead of shouts and Saldi does an excellent job of communicating that message visually. Albert Kriemler’s elegantly minimal designs look especially beautiful set against the lush green backdrop and Alana is as lovely as ever.


ROBERTO CAVALLI

Roberto Cavalli - Designer | Mario Testino  – Photographer | Marie Chaix - Fashion Editor/Stylist | Sam McKnight - Hair Stylist | Charlotte Tilbury - Makeup Artist | Jack Flanagan - Set Designer | Lorraine Griffin - Manicurist

Roberto Cavalli’s clothes are not for wallflowers, so it makes sense that the S/S campaign features three of the boldest and mostt compelling models around. Isabeli Fontana, Malgosia Bela and Sui He star in Mario Testino‘s kinetic images filled with bold prints, saturated colors and the brand’s signature in your face opulence.

Behind the Scenes: Kenzo

Paris fashion week was filled with beautiful moments du jour, but none were quite as cool as KENZO‘s safari chic collection. Filled with references to the original ‘Jungle Jap’ store, started by founder Kenzo Takada and an offbeat eclecticism that looked great on the runway, Humberto Leon and Carol Lim pulled off one of the season’s most inventive showings. Experience what it was like behind the scenes with this incredible video that takes you backstage and into the front row. Enjoy the incredible girls – Fei Fei Sun, Irina Nikolaeva, Ming Xi, Liu Wen, Jeneil Williams, Caroline Brasch Nielsen – the list goes on, the incredible makeup by Yadim and of course the clothes. Brand Creative : The Best F/W Campaigns So Far

Every top tier brand ushers out a new campaign each season, but only a select few push creative boundaries instead of just pushing product. With fall ads launching earlier than ever (remember the days of opening up September Vogue and experiencing new ads for the very first time) there are already several ads that impress us with their unique interpretation of their brand’s message. Take a look at our picks for most intriguing ads so far and be sure to share your selections in the comments!

Kenzo

The brand’s thrilling reboot continues with Jean Paul Goude breathing new life into the fall campaign imagery. Xiao Wen Ju & Simon Sabbah are connected in these cheeky reversible shots with a neon Kenzo logo flashing in the background. Goude’s image has instant visual impact and is a fun showcase for those cool Humberto Leon and Carol Lim designs.

Raf Simons
In case you had any doubt’s about Raf Simons’ ability to be subversive check out the striking new f/w ads by Pierre Debusschere starring Yannick Abrath. The impressive sculptural shots are a sight to behold, as is the corresponding campaign video that brings the imagery to life with beautifully abstract visuals.

Mulberry

The fuzzy-wuzzies from Where the Wild Things Are invade Tim Walker‘s fantastical ads for Mulberry. The ads otherworldly vibe is only heightened by the addition of fashion’s favorite pixie, Lindsey Wixson and Jane How‘s sleek styling.

Prada

All the things that made the show so memorable are served up with glossy perfection in Steven Meisel‘s ultra-luxe ads. Vanessa AxenteMagdalena FrackowiakMadison HeadrickElza LuijendijkIselin Steiro and Anne Vyalitsyna sport the dip-dyed extensions and gilded accessories with panache.

Louis Vuitton

Putting that one of a kind Louis Vuitton train to good use Steven Meisel shoots a cast of it girls for the brand’s fall ads.  Elena BartelsErjona AlaFranzi MuellerHedvig PalmJulia NobisMackenzie DrazanMagda LaguingeMarie PiovesanMarina HeidenRos Georgiou shine in those signature oversized hats.

Givenchy

It is hard to beat an ad with fashion by Carine Roitfeld, images by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott and a fresh cast including Stella Tennant, Joan Smalls, Daniela Braga, Stef Van Der Laan, Rodrigo Braga, Simone Nobili and Jarrod Scott. Givenchy’s campaign is all about motion and movement, be sure to check out the behind the scenes video to see how those action shots came together.
