Appealing new ads from fashion’s young, innovative designers.

PROENZA SCHOULER

The S/S ads from Proenza are all about a dreamy mood and David Sims‘ imagery featuring the cooler than thou duo of Julia Nobis and Irina Nikolaeva creates a strong, yet ethereal vibe that goes well with the brand’s eclectic Tumblr influenced collection. The mismash of visual styles and inspirations found on the social media site are mirrored in Sims’ colorful, collage approach to the campaign.


THEYSKENS THEORY

Even before Olivier Theyskens took the helm at Theory the brand was about the kind of effortlessly beautiful clothes that girls want to wear. Now that Theyskens is heading things, the famed designer has added an appealingly cool vibe to the collections and the line’s seasonal imagery. Girl of the moment, Wylie Hays is front and center in Willy Vanderperre (Paris: Management + Artists, New York: Management + Artists)’s stark shots as is a highly covetable new Theory handbag.


3.1 PHILLIP LIM

Phillip Lim hits the streets with a stylish campaign that shows you just how much his designs stand out. Katryn Kruger and Franzi Mueller strut down crowded NYC sidewalks in head to toe Lim working those chic Spring patterns and bringing the punky 3.1 look to life in Alessio Bolzoni‘s ad images.


BALMAIN

Balmain keeps it simple with a beautiful David Sims campaign featuring Manon Leloup. When you have a beautiful girl and the intricately decadent designs of Olivier Rousteing, you don’t need much more to entice your audience.

First Look: Intermission DK

As one of the sleekest glossies on the scene, Intermission Magazine never fails to deliver something different and with their new launch of their first Danish edition – Intermission DK, they create an elegant new addition to their growing brand. Case in point, their ultra-chic new covers featuring girls of the moment Marie Piovesan and Katryn Kruger clad in Balenciaga and Celine. The images shot by John Scarisbrick and styled by Daniel Magnussen and Vanessa Traina (New York: Management + Artists, Paris: Management + Artists) are engaging and fresh. Edit of the Week : A Simple Plan

A good story doesn’t need a lot of bells and whistles, sometimes the very best rely on tenants of simplicity. Willy Vanderperre (Paris: Management + Artists, New York: Management + Artists) creates an elegant exploration of denim in the latest Vogue Japan with a little help from master stylist George Cortina. Taking one of the most commonplace (and often boring) materials and making editorially relevant is no small feat, but Cortina pulls it off masterfully. On the backs of Marte Mei van Haaster, Katryn Kruger & Victor Nylander the pieces come alive and pared down hair and makeup by Anthony Turner and Lucia Pica add the final bit of polish to a story that feels effortless.

Deja Vu: Flower Girls

When we first saw Craig McDean‘s gorgeous new story in the latest Interview we were blown away. The combo of Katryn Kruger, a floral overlay and Stella McCartney‘s clothes made for an especially appealing series of images (see the full story on Interview Mag.com) but then we got to thinking – what did McDean’s shots remind us of?

There aren’t many wholly original ideas out there, so if you look back far enough you’ll find a recent editorial image that looks like something from the past. Turns out we didn’t have to look back very far since Sølve Sundsbø‘s beautiful images of Edita Vilkeviciute from last year were also sort of in the same vein. Fun coincidence, but not a real trip on the way back machine. Take a look at Emil Cadoo‘s double exposure images that look eerily similar to McDean’s shots but predate them by nearly 50 years. Twenty years before that the great fashion photographer, Horst P. Horst created his own spin on the theme with a singularly gorgeous shot in Vogue. Four photographers, one visually appealing concept and 65 years separating them. Who do you think captured the idea best?

On the runway Prada’s Spring/Summer mix of car motifs and couch cushion patterns veered towards camp, but in Steven Meisel‘s stunning campaign imagery the very same looks are the perfect blend of elegance and kitsch. Only the very best campaigns can make you rethink a collection, by bringing out its essence. In Meisel’s shots Ymre StiekemaMeghan CollisonKatryn KrugerNatasha Poly & Elise Crombez preen at a gas station on vintage hotrods whose “spiky rear fins and bodies emblazoned with flames reflect the design motifs in the collection.” Press releases aside, the girls are phenomenal, the clothes are elevated to a new threshold and the chunky necklaces from the brand new jewelry collection look like a dream.
