The Look of Angelo Pennetta

April 10th, 2012 |Posted by Janelle

Considering how much of fashion’s excitement happens behind the scenes, it is surprising how few editorial images enter into reportage territory. Ask anyone working in the industry: half the magic takes place far away from photo studios, runways and sound stages. Seeing these moments captured is always intriguing, and Angelo Pennetta‘s work provides a bird’s-eye view into the realities behind fashion.

In British Vogue, Pennetta follows Karlie Kloss as she makes her way through Paris fashion week, offering a glamorous yet candid look at the model lifestyle. The pictures are high gloss, styled to a t, and showcase some of the season’s best clothes, but they manage to feel authentic and inviting. Who wouldn’t want to lounge around at the Hotel Crillon with Karlie?

Likewise, Pennetta’s shots of the effervescent Liu Wen‘s travels through China felt like an little peek into Liu’s private side. So often it is the photographer who meticulously crafts the vision a model is supposed to represent; viewing the work of an artist who lets the girls be themselves is a treat. Especially when the journeys he takes you on are so lovely.

Brit Wit

February 6th, 2012 |Posted by Janelle

British Vogue always manages to feature some of our favorite girls in decidedly different ways. This month the mag transforms ethereal gypsy Abbey Lee Kershaw into a 60s siren, gives Zuzanna Bijoch the minimalist treatment and provides Karlie Kloss with entry into a world of pure kitsch. The dramatic, colorful and just slightly kooky stories, make for an especially strong issue and the perfect compliment to that candy colored Lana Del Rey cover.

The retro vibe of Abbey Lee Kershaw‘s dreamy story by by Alasdair McLellan is enhanced by the fact that it was shot in Hollywood legend Elizabeth Taylor’s former home: Francesca Burns‘ styling really shines here.

Zuzanna Bijoch‘s severe shots by David Sims feature standout pieces from BalenciagaComme des Garcons and Miu Miu selected by none other than Joe McKenna.

The Mario Testino helmed meditation on excess is filled with patterns, prints and other forms of opulent ornamentation chosen by Lucinda Chambers and worn by Karlie Kloss.

As Seen on TV!

January 6th, 2012 |Posted by Janelle

Were there an actual Italian Vogue channel we would watch it 24/7 as it would most certainly trump some of the lackluster “fashion” television on the air right now. The Conde Nast entertainment division has yet to provide us with such an incredible gift, but if the January Vogue Italia coverstory is anything to go by there is certainly potential for hilarity and hijinks. Sending up the popular Home Shopping networks with a Steven Meisel story featuring top models is a brilliant idea and one that translates beautifully. While we doubt that you’re ever going to be able to buy that Chanel gown off the back of Daria Strokous QVC, it is amazing to see the land of snuggies and SlapChops invaded by high fashion. With stellar hair by Jimmy Paul and gorgeous Dolce & Gabbana makeup by Pat McGrath all this story needed as a cameo by Joan Rivers to push it over the top and into the realm of iconic editorials.

Body Conscious

December 1st, 2011 |Posted by Janelle

Karlie Kloss bares all for Steven Meisel‘s camera in the latest Vogue Italia . The studio shoot simply named ‘Body by Kloss’ focuses on Karlie’s lithe physique and gamine presence. Can you believe it was only a few short years ago Miss Kloss came on the scene as a fresh faced newbie? Now she’s showing the world the graceful woman she’s become.

Nightlife

October 10th, 2011 |Posted by Janelle

Take away the cultivated coating of sleaze from Terry Richardson‘s work and you’re left with a surprisingly skillful snapshot photographer. Case in point his latest story for British Vogue is an elegant and upbeat trip through Manhattan nightlife. With the neon lights of the Odeon in the background, the bouyant energy of Karlie Kloss and some killer styling by Charlotte Pilcher, the editorial captures the vibrant life of a girl on the go. As always Karlie brings an effortless quality to her poses and her wholesome natural glamour shines, even when she’s dressed as a female version of Mr. Richardson or munching on a plate of french fries.
