Cover to Cover

January 4th, 2011 |Posted by Janelle

Magazines roll out the best models and those coveted Spring fashions for their latest offerings. Vogue Brazil gives Emanuela de Paula a beautiful beach chic image for their January edition, which serves as a tribute to Brazil’s stunning black models. Gisele Bundchen wears a look from the popular S/S Prada collection on Vogue China‘s demure cover shot, while Karen Elson wears another look from the same collection on Vogue Nippon. Catherine McNeil unleashes her inner vamp for her fifth cover of Vogue Australia and is featured in a special article about her style. Not a bad showing for February – which cover is your personal favorite?

Bits & Bytes: Brazilian Bombshells

Former MOTW Aline Weber (top). Alessandra Ambrosio (bottom).

Just in time as the sizzling spring/summer season arrives in NY is Hercules’ spread of 8 fabulous Brazilian beauties wearing well, not much of anything. Shot by Paola Kudacki and cast by Natalie Joos, see the sneak peek  here.

Elsa Sylvan by Ellen von Unwerth for Target/Zac Posen.
It’s a Zac Posen moment with not only the launch of his Target collaboration, but his first venture into real estate.

Model News:

Some might have called the 00′s the decade of the Brazilian model invasion but the non Brazilians seem to be popular right now for their campaigns.

We agree with Fashionista about setting some rules in New York (like Paris has) for models under the age of 18.

MDC’s top 10 newcomer Carla Gebhart gets her Ponyryder interview.

For anyone born before 1980, Niki Taylor will always be one of the original supermodels. Here, Production shows she is just as beautiful as ever.

We know male models are always keeping themselves busy since it’s just not as hectic for them as it is for the girls. Here’s 4 that are not only super successful (Vincent LaCrocq, Boyd Holbrook, Jacques Naude and Jamie Strachan), they are creating their own little artists community/gallery called BAG.

We adore this story in the NY Times about Karen Elson and her new album.

dkling
TFS does it again, picking out fascinating faces amongst all the thousands of new ones. We love Dan Kling who has an elfin yet ethereal face perfect for Jil Sander, Raf Simons and Prada.

Miscellaneous:

Long before the Sartorialist, there was Bill Cunningham. I remember seeing him first in the early 90′s outside at shows and thinking who IS this guy? At 81 years old, Bill’s the ORIGINAL street style photographer and is still working his NY Times beat to this day. There’s a documentary recently out on him (where they spent 8 years chasing him to get his cooperation… “Why me? There’s no subject here”). Some of these recent street style photographers could take some lessons in humbleness and hard work from this true old school gentlemen. (Check out his video work where his enthusiasm is so infectious).

Prada takes over the world! Well at least our alphabet. Here’s the Pradalphabet created by M&M.

One of our favorite designers, Rad Hourani, writes a NY Times piece on black, his favorite color.

If you haven’t read Cathy Horyn‘s detailed story on Alexander McQueen‘s final hours, read it here now.

One of our favorite agents with a oh so wicked sense of English humor (and amazing stories to go with it), Richard Habberley gets his moment in the spotlight with an interview by Love magazine.

Modeling news:
We talked about, LVMH’s new site, the Nowness. Here’s Guinevere Van Seenus for Rodarte, which premiered yesterday.

One of my personal FAVORITE models of all time: Renee Simonsen. Ford gives us an overview of her career and what she’s up to now!

Russian girls are always stunning. Check out this new young lady with Women Milan.

Jessica Stam and Agyness Deyn to design! 2 more model slashes!

Coco Rocha is engaged! Congrats!! And speaking of Coco, Fashion Week Daily takes to the streets to find out who/what people think a “Coco Rocha” is...

We agree with Jezebel, why are there blondes on these covers?

And yes, more models of color on the runway, please. 16% non-white is still not enough.

How cool are Greg Kessler‘s Model Morphosis for the NY Times?

The fashion industry is filled with people with unhealthy habits. For the young models who are struggling with their weight, please don’t ever let it get to this point (and if it does, get help).

Karen Elson is Fierce with a capital “F”. Gorgeous, funny, and talented? You’ve doing better than 90% of the TV/movie stars out there, Karen!

Another wonderful young lady that we adore, Agyness Deyn shows us another side to her multi faceted life.

Fashion and media:
Another reason we love Grace Coddington and Andre Leon Talley. They are old school with a capital O.

Guy Trebay, of the NY Times talks to WWD about the new media and bloggers. See what he thinks about Tavi and Bryanboy.

Miscellaneous:
Funny, funny post on Olivier Zahm by Frockwriter.

In the wake of Alexander McQueen‘s tragic death by suicide, it is really great to see the work Daniel “Harry Potter” Radcliffe is doing. If only more people in high profile industries would give back to the world like this….

Read photographer David Benjamin Sherry’s open and wonderfully refreshing interview on being gay and how photographer Collier Schorr was his professor!

Snap Happy

December 4th, 2009 |Posted by Janelle

Steven Meisel has a sense of humor and every so often it emerges on the pages of Vogue Italia : the December issue is a tongue in cheek send up of Twitter, social media and the perils of online exposure. Beginning with a hilarious tweet from the master himself, the editorial is filled with fun little moments : from Abbey Lee Kershaw climbing into her fridge to Kristen McMenamy jumping on a trampoline with her dog, the whole story is priceless.
