Gold Rush

January 15th, 2014 |Posted by Janelle

Andreea Diaconu.
Josh Olins.
Clare Richardson.
WSJ.

A fashion forward trip to the elegant Costa Careyes on Mexico’s Pacific shore makes for an inspired editorial. Girl of the moment Andreea shines in Olins’ imagery and features prominently throughout the issue. Author and man about town, Derek Blasberg interviews the brainy beauty about her college plans, career ambitions and the unexpected twists along the way, including the story behind her memorable collaborations with Mario Sorrenti. “The plan was for me to make enough money for four years of college, and then I’d walk away…” Diaconu quips to Blasberg, “I had just about saved enough and was thinking of quitting, and then I got a call from my agent: ‘Mario Sorrenti booked you for Italian Vogue.’”

Anna Rises

October 30th, 2013 |Posted by Janelle

It is easy to see why Anna Ewers is the most wanted girl of the moment. The German beauty has a pristine appeal that calls to mind Deutschland favorites like Toni Garrn and Claudia Schiffer. Classic beauty is always great, but nothing beats a girl with the look and the ability to bring it in front of the camera. Since her stellar show season (check out her Top 10 Newcomer story) Anna has been making a splash in the pages of Vogue Paris, CR Fashion Book, British Vogue and the latest Prada campaign – an impressive lineup for any model, but a breakout series of bookings for a girl fresh on the scene.

Seeing Spots

May 30th, 2013 |Posted by Janelle

When Haider Ackermann filled his S/S13 runway with transparent creations emblazoned with black and white dots, it seemed like an unusual move. Polka dots are a fashion standard dating back years, but the diminutive patterns are more often associated with the prim styles of the 1950s than with the kinds of cutting-edge wares favored on Paris’ runways. The designer so known for his innovative use of lush, saturated color was showing another side, taking one of the most uncool of motifs and making it feel new.

In keeping with the current craze for all things graphic, stylists have embraced the versatility of these simple circles, working Ackermann’s creations into a variety of editorials. On occasion the interpretations don’t veer too far from the runway approach (fashion abides by the ‘if it ain’t broke don’t fix it’ mantra whenever it can) but the excitement comes when the spots are complimented by clashing patterns to create a dynamic visual treat. Whether it is layering in another of Ackermann’s prints from S/S or adding a bold kimono for interest, the real fun lies in the mix which offers stylists an opportunity to show their creativity.

Moody Blues

March 26th, 2013 |Posted by Janelle

To say denim is a wardrobe staple is something of an understatement; jeans have moved from workwear, to becoming one of the hallmarks of modern fashion. As ubiquitous as jeans have become, there are still plenty of options beyond the basic blues. For Dazed & Confused Josh Olins and Robbie Spencer unlock the avant garde potential of denim-on-denim, creating looks that range from quirky, to full on outlandish. Kasia Struss keeps her trademark cool even as she’s layered in everything from oversized overalls, to jean jackets with linebacker sized shoulders. Olins’ ultra-cool photographs keep the focus on the clothes, while Spencer’s edgy styling never fails to excite.

Minimal Mood

January 22nd, 2013 |Posted by Janelle

Josh Olins.
Alastair McKimm.
Suvi Koponen.
Vogue China.

Less is more in Olins’ take on the seasons’ most appealingly minimalist pieces. Styled to perfection by McKimm, the luxurious runway pieces especially sleek – even Miuccia Prada’s decadently girlish collection manages to seem stripped down in these stark images. Suvi proves the perfect muse for the current mood and with her slick hair by Esther Langham and glistening skin courtesy of Sally Branka, she embodies modern, nonchalant chic.
