Bowie and the Beauties

February 28th, 2013 |Posted by contributor

Leave it to David Bowie to return to pop culture with a project that blazes across music, fashion, and film. Directed by filmmaker Floria Sigismondi (The Runaways, 2010), Bowie’s fashion-film-meets-music-video for “The Stars (Are Out Tonight)” is a surreal visual feast. Accompanying the latest track off the glam rock icon’s imminent 24th studio album, the film is equal parts Fellini imitation and David Lynch devotion, twisting a wild narrative around tabloids, domesticity, and androgyny. Tilda Swinton lends her acting chops playing Bowie’s wife as Saskia de Brauw and Andrej Pejic‘s deviant celebrity couple invades their lives. Iselin Steiro, rounding out the film’s trio of top models, gets the glammest gig of all playing a young Bowie–the two even lip the words together! What do you make of the video for “The Stars (Are Out Tonight)?” (text by Matt Meyer)

Editorial Inspiration: Donna Jordan

December 14th, 2012 |Posted by Janelle

Once you get past the main editorial and its glossy tribute to the timeless Jerry Hall, the new Vogue Italia offers you a look at another iconic blonde beauty of the 1970s. Though perhaps lesser known than some of her disco-era ilk, Donna Jordan ranks among the most influential models of all time. Before Lara Stone was even born, Donna was the bleach browed, gap-toothed beauty who set the trend. Whether she was being shot by photographers like Helmut Newton, Guy Bourdin and Oliviero Toscani, or appearing in Andy Warhol films Donna demanded the attention of the fashion crowd. Paolo Roversi‘s colorful tribute to her unique style casts Iselin Steiro as the titular 70s beauty and captures her look wonderfully.

Seasonal Reboots

December 21st, 2010 |Posted by Janelle

Two of fashion’s biggest brands refresh their images with crisp new ad campaigns that offer up fresh takes on their aesthetics. Steven Meisel shoots Gisele Bundchen for Balenciaga and strips the supermodel of her patented sex appeal for a sporty and boyish campaign that captures the pared down look of the collection itself. Yuri Pleskun joins La Bundchen on the romp, sporting layers of face paint by Pat McGrath

Beige is the signature color of Hannah MacGibbon’s Chloe, so it makes sense that David Sims‘ campaign is almost entirely ecru. Malgosia Bela and Iselin Steiro look casually chic in the line’s classic silhouettes and clean lines.

Rebel, Rebel

September 30th, 2010 |Posted by Janelle

With his larger than life persona and various incarnations David Bowie has always been a source of fashion inspiration, David Sims takes the icon’s androgynous look to the pages of Vogue Paris and transforms Iselin Steiro in the process. Emmanuelle Alt selects the perfect blend of menswear inspired pieces to create a look the merges Bowie’s Aladdin Sane and Thin White Duke eras into the perfect mix and with the final touch of crimson hair Iselin truly looks just like him.

Simply Sims

July 23rd, 2010 |Posted by Janelle

If you love the work of David Sims, then you’re going to love August’s Vogue Paris; Sims’ sleek style gets 65 pages worth of editorial space within the issue. Carine Roitfeld styles the massive portfolio of fall looks from labels like Stella McCartney, Louis Vuitton and Alexander McQueen and the pictures don’t miss a beat. Sims mixes studio shots, location shots, color and black and white for an editorial that covers a great deal of designer territory; each brand gets an image that is uniquely theirs and each girl looks gorgeous in her pictures.

The Campaign Trail

July 13th, 2010 |Posted by Janelle

It isn’t even August, but we’ve already gotten a peak at the majority of fall campaigns, new ads just keep coming out of the woodwork and this week’s batch is especially eclectic. Moschino offers up a cowgirl themed ad with an over the top image of Alessandra Ambrosio shot by Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin. Celine repeats their successful formula of Juergen Teller portraits, enlisting Sigrid Agren and Emma Balfour to wear Phoebe Philo’s sleek designs. Tommy Hilfiger plays up the All American heritage of the brand with a roadtrip themed campaign shot by Craig McDean, starring Noah Mills, Iselin Steiro, Heloise Guerin, Jacquelyn Jablonski and a host of others. Last but certainly not least, JPG shows Crystal Renn, Emma Xie and Kelly Moreira looking phenomenal in pieces from his Russian themed collection.
