French Flair

For Industrie Magazine’s “Power” issue French designer Isabel Marant dishes on her worry free demeanor and laid back aesthetics. Originally starting by designing clothes for her friends, Marant is a Parisienne fashion-fixture, and both herself and her brand embody and influence that effortlessly chic Paris charm. Of her line of thought Marant explains in the interview, “I didn’t pretend to ‘fantasize’ a certain woman; I wanted to create a walk, a charm, a nature – not a show off.” Conjuring that essence the editorial photographed by Lachlan Bailey has Julia Bergshoeff looking utterly cool styled in a swath of Isabel Marant selects from seasons past by Géraldine Saglio. A simple dewy skin and wettish hair provided by Sally Branka and hair stylist Christian Eberhard makes sure to hew to the fluent charm of Marant’s designs.

Marant Moves

The Isabel Marant woman for spring is powerful, energetic and apparently quite flexible too. Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin helm the brand’s striking new campaign starring Natasha Poly with creative direction by Atelier Franck Durand. The bold images feature Natasha giving poses worthy of a yogi and displaying Marant’s modern art infused Spring collection. Still-lifes showcase covetable items like the soon to be ubiquitous Marant flat sandal. In case you’re wondering where to pick up any of these looks the boldfaced text on each photo outlines the line’s global retail presence.

La Reina

With the triple campaign whammy of Balenciaga, Isabel Marant and Emilio Pucci Gisele Bundchen proves herself high fashion’s MVP. Given that she’s already the current face of H&M and has taken over Stuart Weitzman from none other than Kate Moss, it can feel as though we’re seeing Gisele everywhere and that’s a good thing. Bundchen has always been a compelling presence in front of the camera and her jam-packed campaign slate gives her ample opportunity to display her versatility. In Steven Klein‘s (Art Partner) punk ads for Balenciaga she’s a buzz-cut sporting rebel, while Mario Sorrenti‘s(Art Partner) sleek ads for Pucci give her a chance to amp up the sex appeal in Peter Dundas‘ elegantly embellished party pieces. Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin offer yet another interpretation with Bundchen playing Marant’s well-dressed everywoman in Marant’s signature relaxed knits and layers.

Ear to Ear

There is no smiling in high fashion. Seriously.

There was a point in the pre-recession days (if you can remember those) when spotting a smile on a cover or in a campaign was was something akin to seeing Anna Dello Russo in khakis and Keds – it simply wasn’t done. Don’t believe us? Take a look at Fashion Iconography for a year by year cover rundown of blank stares and suggestive pouting.

We’re not sure if it is the lighter than air feeling of spring’s floucy separates, the inescapable influence of smize-queen Tyra Banks, or a tie in deal with Crest, but this season is all about laughing, grinning and being incessantly cheerful.

Mirte Maas and Mathias Bergh‘s Tom Ford ads are beyond upbeat and bordering on manic – who would guess that Mr. Ford himself was behind the camera? Beneath all that carefully crafted sexiness, we knew he had a sense of humor.

Julia Stegner, Miranda Kerr and a couple of baby goats for Bally. Cavity. Inducing. sweetness.

Only a hint of a grin for Bottega Veneta, but seeing Liya Kebede always makes us smile. Plus, lets be real who wouldn’t be grinning if they found themselves in the possession of that tote.

Arizona Muse for Isabel Marant, stuck in the backseat of a convertible (cars are another of the season’s big fashion ad motifs, see Prada’s gas station-fest) shielding her face from the sun and STILL smiling.

Hearing the words Milla Jovovich by Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin, automatically makes you think of a really arty black and white shoot, possibly with some cool face painting or an M/M Paris design scrawled along the side. Luckily I&V are saving that kind of stuff for Justin Bieber this month and instead have graced us with this shot of an ecstatic Milla.

Dressed Up or Down

Stylist Géraldine Saglio shows her skill with two separate stories in Vogue Paris starring the versatile Anna Selezneva. Pulling off the luxurious vixen look with aplomb on one page, then switching to a youthful preppy look on the next takes skill and Anna handles it well. The selection of Harry Winston and Tiffany & Co. diamonds certainly helps, that and all the gorgeous Isabel Marant.
