mdc ♥s : True Romantics

February 14th, 2011 |Posted by Janelle

David Bowie and Iman are one of fashion’s all time great couples

MDC wishes everyone a very happy Valentine’s day, but shouldn’t every day have a little touch of romance? Here are a few little gifts for the one you love, or for whenever a sentimental mood strikes you.

LIGHT A CANDLE…

Flowers are a holiday tradition, but you’ve never had a real arrangement until you’ve had one from Belle Fleur. Their modern approach and attention to detail makes for some of the most beautiful bouquets we’ve ever seen. Combine these lovelies, with their heavenly selection of scented candles and room sprays and you have the perfect atmosphere for that special day. We’re into the Mayan Tuberose and Cacao Tabaq versions for creating sexy ambiance.

| available at Belle Fleur

SEX IN A BOTTLE…

With names like Beyond Love and Prelude to Love, you might think that the By Kilian line is filled with demure scents for innocents, but don’t be fooled. These full bodied and decadent fragrances are as sexy as they come and with nearly a dozen scents in the line already, there is truly something for everyone. We love the tobacco, honey and raspberry blend of Back to Black, Aphrodisiac and the leather, rose and dark woods combo of Rose Oud. Added bonus, each heady concoction is packaged in a divine black lacquer box complete with lock and key; perfect for whoever has your heart.

| available at Saks, Bergdorfs & By Kilian’s e-boutique

A KISS IS JUST A KISS…

Even if you have no intention of spending the day kissing, there is always a good use for a fabulous lipgloss. Who can resist a shimmering pout? Make Up Forever’s Lab Shine glosses have been keeping our lips glossy all fashion week and their new spring collection is filled with bright pinks and reds – were loving fun colors like Morello Cherry and Amethyst. Best of all the richly pigmented shades last longer on lips than most glosses, so get ready to pucker up!

| available at Make Up Forever & Sephora

ROMANCE IN A BOTTLE

Our torrid Tom Ford love affair continues! When searching for the best in romantic fragrances, we discovered that Ford’s Champaca Absolute, is a favorite among brides. After taking a whiff of the mix of Tokaji wine, cognac, bergamot, magnolia champaca and sandalwood it was easy to understand why; there is an elegance and uniqueness to the scent that makes it every bit as refined as one of his bespoke suits. The warm and inviting aroma, seems like the perfect compliment to one’s special day.

| available at Neiman Marcus & the Tom Ford boutique

CHOCOLATE!!!!!

We saved the sweetest for last! Every single thing at Maison du Chocolat is delectable, but the their line of decadent treats features giant versions of their popular bon bon flavors. They had us at giant bon bon.

Bits & Bytes: Iman by Christiaan

December 8th, 2010 |Posted by Betty

Iman by Christiaan.

“A picture is a poke in the eye of that reality.”
-Christian Houtenbos from Intermission Magazine interview.

Intermission Magazine celebrates their new website with a story by top hairstylist Christiaan on his 40+ years of polaroids. We spot Iman, Grace Jones and Calvin Klein, from the 70′s/80′s. Some of our favorites? Janice Dickenson’s pre-surgery face and Gia Carangi looking like Cindy Crawford mixed with Sheila Marquez.

Fashion News:

Love this red accented camouflage travel collection created exclusively for the Corner by Trussardi (via FWD). And if you’ve never heard creative director/photographer Milan Vukmirovic‘s sexy accent, there’s also a video at the link.

If you haven’t yet seen the list of winners at the British Fashion Awards, go here now. Phoebe Philo won Designer of the Year and Lara Stone of course, for Model of the Year.

Marilyn Minter shoots the new Jimmy Choo campaign.

Modeling News:

Speaking of Ms. Stone, the Stone clones have arrived, so says Jezebel. We, though, think each girl is uniquely gorgeous… What say you?

Have you kept track of all the pregnant models in the last year? NY Magazine’s got a count for you.

Yves Saint Laurent wants YOU for their new ad campaign. If you’re lucky.….

Miscellaneous:

Into the Gloss chats with top hairstylist/Grace Coddington significant other, Didier Malige.

If you missed it, here’s Nick Knight’s conversation with BoF.

The future of advertising.. and it ain’t pretty for the ad agencies.

Hero Magazine collaborates with JW Anderson for a limited edition exclusive t-shirt with all profits going to charity. It’ll be the first of an ongoing series.

Met Mavens

May 4th, 2010 |Posted by Janelle

The red carpet of the Met’s Costume Institute Gala is always a scene for fashion moments and mishaps, the attendees either look incredible or completely regrettable but no matter what the outfits are memorable. This year was no exception with scores of actors, models and fashionistas turning up in their sartorial best, but who won the evening when it came to style? Did Chanel Iman’s Kors jumpsuit look refreshingly modern, or overly glittery? Was Doutzen’s Zac Posen a little too prom queen for you, or was the look perfectly sweet? Was Sasha’s beige Marni the bomb or a total bust? Tell us who you think looked the best, or the worst and take a look at the roundup of chic model looks.

Made in Brazil posted beautiful shots shot by Victoria’s Secret favorite Emanuela de Paula backstage at a Brazilian fashion show of her fellow Brazilian bombshells. As he says, “You gotta love a model for taking really beautiful pictures as opposed to just snapping them on a blackberry or an iPhone and posting them on twitter.” We say, AMEN!

Fashion news:
Raise your hand if you love uberstylist and editor Polly Mellen.

Julie Gilhart from Barney’s is Stylefile’s Future of Fashion interview part 5.

Julia Restoin-Roitfeld and her friend, casting director Natalie Joos go through Julia’s closet.

We think this is Anna Dello Russo‘s blog because it is just too fabulous not to be.

If you STILL do not know who Malcolm Mclaren was (and you know who you are), go here to read about his importance to pop culture and fashion. Here’s Cathy Horyn’s tribute to him: call me crazy but doesn’t young Vivienne Westwood look like Lara Stone here?

We are big fans of Siki Im (look for our upcoming special shots from his F/W 10 show). The Nowness has an arresting video of his collection which was inspired by “American Psycho” (video from Wardenclyffe).

Modeling news:

Ponyryder interviews Dutch beauty Ymre Stiekema

Emme is a plus size model that we adore and is super inspiring.

Alla Kostromichova has won Elle’s Model of the Year award back in her hometown in the Ukraine.

Supermodel Gisele Bundchen has a new baby, is revered in Brazil and post pregnancy… looks like this. Life sometimes is a tiny bit unfair, no?

Iman is iconic! The CFDA will honor one of our favorite faces EVER!

Gala Glamour

May 5th, 2009 |Posted by Janelle

methosts

Lets be honest. Last night could have used some Alaia. While the famed designer (and his supermodel muses) chose to spend a quiet evening at home the rest of the fashion crowd was in full effect at the Met gala. For the most part the fashions were mundane and with the noted exception of Leighton Meester’s amazingly absurdist turn in LV even the risky choices weren’t much to talk about. Thank goodness for a select few who brought their good taste and A-game wearing outfits that truly made an impact. Here are MDC’s choices for best dressed of the evening. Which Met Gala ensembles were you loving?

1. Shalom Harlow : With her dramatic, statement making black frothy dress Shalom truly captured the ‘Model as Muse’ concept. Its not enough to just look pretty, you have to really set yourself apart from the crowd. In a sea of minis and staid red carpet creations Shalom was one of the few who took it to that next level.

Shalom Harlow

2 & 3 : Iris Strubegger & Anne Vyalitsyna : You cannot go wrong with Givenchy couture but Iris’ slicked back hair added an adrogynous vibe to her feminine yet edgy gown. Miss Anne V was simply delectable in Peter Som and showed you could still be incredibly sexy while working a ladylike look.

irisannv1

4. Jessica Stam : Wham. Bam. Thank you. Stam. Incredible in Rodarte, one of the few minis that truly stood out.

Stam

5 & 6: Natalia Vodianova & Nadja Auermann : Two women who have always gone their own direction with regards to fashion. Natalia makes shimmering pink fringe look palatable in Fortuny while Nadja’s platinum curls paired with Lanvin’s shimmering Grecian gown is a win win.

Natalia & Nadja

7. Amber Valletta : Two words : Lemon crush. Amber gets infinite bonus points for choosing vintage Galanos but the real beauty of this gown is the rich burst of yellow. With a color that eye-catching you don’t need much else.86351755VA016_The_Model_As_

8&9 : Catherine McNeil & Sasha Pivovarova

These two looks couldnt’ be more different but they suit their wearers to t. McNeil looks old school supermodel va va voom in Mouret while Sasha’s delightfully madcap feathered, tiaraed, completely over the top Valli is pure Miss Havisham chic! Love it or hate it you know it’s pure Sasha. Adding to the allure were her stunning Luigi Scialanga jewels. Talk about a statement necklace.

10. Iman

Always refined, always elegant – in this Donna Karan number Iman looks like the regal grand dame that she is. Pure class.

Iman

Check out the beautiful interior at the gala. Don’t you wish you were here?
