All-Star Spring

March 13th, 2014 |Posted by Matthew

Gunning for April 2014 with a head start, Vogue Japan dives into its Art of Style issue with 10 top models in one fabulous edit. Luigi & Daniele + Iango shoot Karmen Pedaru, Hilary Rhoda, and several more in a celebration of beauty and glamour that’s bound to amaze. Giovanna Battaglia brings her signature eye for color in styling this megawatt shoot, exemplifying that “Style Has Many Faces.” Some of those faces include Liu Wen inPrada, Nadja Bender in Tom Ford, and Elisabeth Erm in Givenchy. Overwhelming abundance seems to be in full bloom this spring, and this glamorous series—rounded out by Julia Stegner, Jeneil Williams, Lily Donaldson, Natasa Vojnovic and Catherine McNeil—might be the best one yet.

mdc ♥s : All About Eyes

May 27th, 2011 |Posted by Janelle

Lily Donaldson has the most beautiful baby blues in the business | Image by Betty Sze for MDC

The eyes are the window to the soul and they’re often the first thing people pay attention to when they see us. All the more reason to pamper them with the right creams and adorn them with the very best shadows and liners. This week MDC rounds up our favorite beauty products for eyes, each one used frequently by members of our team. Be sure to let us know what your personal favorites are in the comments!

REN Active 7 Radiant Eye Maintenance Gel
This unique gel de-puffs the delicate under eye area quickly and effectively. Perfect for mornings when you’ve gotten less sleep than you should, or evenings spent out on the town. Dab a tiny bit of the cooling formula on any and all puffiness and prepare to be dazzled by the results. We’ve seen REN’s product pop up in many a makeup artist’s kit and we completely understand way. Added bonus, we love the purse friendly size of this product – great for touching up throughout the day.

skyn ICELAND Hydro Cool Firming Eye Gels
For those days when you really are in need of help, give sky ICELAND’s eye gels a try. The cooling pads can be placed beneath the eye area to reduce the appearance of puffiness, fine lines and broken blood vessels in 10 minutes. With the long and eventful party season fast approaching, these are sure to become a mainstay for anyone who had a little too much fun the night before.

Lancome Genifique Eye
An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure and Genifique’s formula offers care for those first signs of aging by stimulating the production of cells. The gel promises brighter, firmer skin in seven days and during that time we saw definite improvement in the texture and elasticity of the skin surrounding our delicate peepers. What can we say, if its good enough for spokeswoman Julia Restoin-Roifteld, it is good enough for us!

Bobbi Brown Metallic Long-Wear Cream Shadow
We tried and tested several different variety of cream eyeshadow, but Bobbi Brown’s was the absolute best. With a wide variety of colors as well as an unrivaled lasting power, these little shadow pots left us thoroughly impressed. Try a glittering pale shade like Pink Coral for day and deep dark shade like Black Pearl for an easy smoky eye when evening comes.

Estee Lauder Pure Color Shadows
Developed by Tom Pecheux and used on the likes of Hilary Rhoda and Liu Wen, this extensive range of colors and shades has enough variety to keep even the most voracious cosmetics fiends happy. Estee is all about quality, so the shadows are as long lasting and very easy to apply, whether you’ve got your own set of brushes or use the little applicator they come with. Our personal favorite shades were the glittering Emerald Star and Sizzling copper.

YSL Faux Cils Noir Radical
There are about a million mascaras on the market and we’ve tried them all (and have about 30 mascara tubes to prove it) Faux Cils was our favorite for the volumizing effect, lasting power and rich black color (Noir Radical is pure midnight black) that makes all eye colors stand out. Not in the mood for basic black – give brights like Extreme Blue and Fascinating Violet a try.

Koh Gen Do Cleansing Spa Water

Hands down the very best and gentlest eye-makeup remover there is. Cuts through thick black liner and three coats of mascara without stinging your eyes, or leaving behind a streaky mess. Beloved by makeup artists, models and the team here for its speed and ease of use – plus  the ultra-portable wipes are wonderful for on the go!

Visual Branding

August 13th, 2010 |Posted by Janelle

Nothing conveys the identity of a brand quite like its advertising and more and more mainstream fashion brands are attempting to tweak their image via campaigns that utilize fashion’s biggest powerplayers. Case in point, the F/W campaign for conservative brand, Talbots features the edgy pairing of Linda Evangelista and Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott. Meanwhile Jones New York enlists Annie Leibovitz and a slew of top names like Hilary Rhoda, Jessica Stam, Hana Soukupova, Jacquetta Wheeler, Du Juan, Yasmin WarsameAminata Niaria and Ujjwala Raut for their ads. Not to be left in the dust, mall staple Esprit enlists Coco Rocha for its collection ads and Anne Vyalitsyna, Du Juan and Missy Rayder by Mariano Vivanco for the mainline.

The addition of a familiar (and fashionable) face can add a layer of cool to a brand’s image, but does the trick work? Did any of these ads enhance your opinion of the labels in question? Tell us.
