First Look: GLASS

June 3rd, 2013 |Posted by Janelle

Like any fine piece of crystal, Glass Magazine is innately elegant. The sleek quarterly is back with a new issue bursting with luxurious content that adds a touch of class to the newsstand. Three chic covers feature three very different beauties, each representative of a fashion movement: Chinese actress Li Bing Bing provides classic glamour, while the always edgy Hanne Gaby Odiele is a vision vintage eclecticism, model turned actress Tao Okamoto takes things one step further with a colorful beauty look and a revealing interview inside. Editorially there is plenty to enjoy, from an expressive exploration of the season’s accessories, an especially luxe story featuring perennial favorite Hannelore Knuts, to stylish menswear editorials that show the masculine side of refinement. All in all the magazine is a treat from start to finish, but don’t take our word for it – have a first look at the new issue of Glass.

Spotlight On: Weir Diary

July 24th, 2012 |Posted by Janelle

Though he’s known for putting together some of the most flawless casts imaginable — see Viktor & Rolf‘s stunning lineup of top tier beauties, and the eclectic group of worldly gents he selected for Berluti – casting director Andrew Weir still finds time to capture the biz’s most beautiful faces in his candid blog, Weir Diary. Getting to the heart of his subjects with honest snapshots that capture them looking unguarded and beautiful, Weir has created an intimate look at fashion from an insider perspective.

Culture Pop : Balenciaga, CdG & Coachella

April 16th, 2012 |Posted by Janelle

BALENCIAGA, THE COLLECTOR

Museums are kicking their fashion focus into overdrive with several choice exhibits happening at once. At Paris’ Musee Galliera two incredible fashion retrospectives are happening, the first looks back on the career and life of Cristobal Balenciaga via his couture fashions and personal collections. Even the masters draw inspiration from somewhere and some of the pieces featured date back to as far as 1730. The fascinating exhibit also explores the designer’s one of a kind pieces made for friends and contemporaries like Elsa Schiaparelli.

COMME des GARCONS – BUBBLELICIOUS

From the past to the future – the museum also offers a unique look at the current Comme des Garcons collection, all white and encapsulated in giant bubbles. Viewing just off the runway designs as works of art isn’t hard when the designs come from as idiosyncratic and skilled a creator as Rei Kawakubo. Take a look at Interview magazine’s preview of the event.

NAOMI REMEMBERS HERB

A decade after his death and Herb Ritts’ work still sets the standard for beautiful fashion imagery. Naomi Campbell remembers Herb and her work with him in a special interview with Time and even recounts the creation of that now legendary supermodel shot. Angelinos can catch the Getty Museum’s retrospective of Ritts’ photography from now until August.

COACHELLA’S CATWALKS

Just in case you haven’t maxed out on Coachella coverage, take a look at stylish shots from Vogue & Bazaar taken by David X. Prutting and Mr. Newton respectively. None of the fashionistas featured commit the crimes noted in Buzz Feed’s hilarious send up of music festival fashion cliches.

Deja Vu : Food for Thought

April 12th, 2012 |Posted by Janelle

Richard Burbridge‘s latest over the top story for New York Times Magazine celebrates the season’s candy colored dresses & bold fruit prints, with a festive food meets fashion series of images. The idea is simple – take the plum prints on a Dolce & Gabbana dress and serve them with a side of fruit salad for good measure – but the magic is all in the execution. Robbie Spencer‘s styling on this story is nothing short of amazing – though we do wonder if he was the one picking up the cart at Whole Foods in addition to selecting the stellar designer looks. Hanne Gaby Odiele and Julia Nobis bring the concept to life with animated posing and the occasional taste of sweetness.

The story got us thinking about all the other time’s we’ve seen fashion and food collide. Though we prefer our meals on a plate something has to be said for the unexpected art that comes about when you re-imagine what every day items can do. Have a trip down memory lane and see some of our  favorite food meets fashion combos.

There is a Dolce & Gabbana dress hiding beneath all that produce.

Even if you didn’t notice the lobsters, this would be an epic shot.

Viktor & Rolf‘s decadent designs get coated in candy – very fitting!

Artist Sung Yeon Ju‘s Wearable Foods series (2009-2010) featured clothing crafted out of materials like banana peels and slices of eggplant.

2010 Kirsi Pyrhonen wore lettuce as a fashion statement in images by Magnus Unnar for the Barneys holiday catalog.

Who can forget that meat dresses Lady Gaga wore on the red carpet & the cover of Vogue Hommes Japan in 2010 – also designed by Sung Yeon Ju!

Cintia Dicker delights in a dress full of M&Ms in Ryan Yoon‘s shoot for Virgine Magazine - 2010

And now for something you can actually put in your mouth. How about some Chanel & Christian Louboutin cupcakes? Prop stylist Lisa Edsalv and photographer Therese Aldgard collaborated on these and we’re petitioning Aaron de MeyKarl Lagerfeld to get them in stores.
