Cinemascope

December 16th, 2010 |Posted by Janelle

Peter Lindbergh brings his film inspired aesthetic back to the pages of Vogue with beautiful editorial that looks fit for the screen. Daria Werbowy and actor David Strathairn team up, playing a photographer and a reporter turned muse in Lindbergh’s story and Grace Coddington provides the elegant styling. Every element from the picturesque desert scenery, to the colorful outfits from Versace and Prada, works beautifully.

Asia Major

November 19th, 2010 |Posted by Janelle

As fashion begins to realize the importance of diversity, we start to see exciting things happening; case in point the Asian models feature in the new issue of Vogue. Starring Liu Wen, Du Juan, Tao Okamoto, Lee Hyun Yi, Hyoni Kang, Bonnie Chen, So Young Kang and Lily Zhi in a punk remake of Cecil Beaton’s classic shot of models wearing Charles James, the images by Steven Meisel and Grace Coddington accompany an article on the meteoric rise of models from China, Japan and South Korea.

What makes the story truly interesting are some of the quotations from the girls themselves:

The challenge for me, and for Asian models in general has been convincing editors, stylists and photographers that we can have mass appeal, but Asian, especially Chinese models have become a stronger presence. Just a season or two ago, there weren’t many models for me to talk with backstage in my native Mandarin. Now I usually have no trouble finding someone at any show.” – Liu Wen

“There still are brands or clients that would not consider using an Asian model, but things are changing dramatically and quickly. I am not sure if being Asian was or is a hinderance. In fact I think it is a plus.”
– Du Juan

Farm Fresh

October 21st, 2010 |Posted by Janelle

Is there anyone more suited to the classic British getaway editorial than Stella Tennant? She just looks right at home in tweed and a pair of Wellington boots, no wonder she remains the go to girl for such stories. Case in point Vogue‘s latest tribute to travel shot by David Sims and styled by Grace Coddington featuring Stella roughing it in Fair Isle sweaters and woolen skirts. Were guessing that the average sheep herder doesn’t wear Galliano while tending to their flock, but the in the surreal world of fashion it manages to look just right.

Modeling news:
We talked about, LVMH’s new site, the Nowness. Here’s Guinevere Van Seenus for Rodarte, which premiered yesterday.

One of my personal FAVORITE models of all time: Renee Simonsen. Ford gives us an overview of her career and what she’s up to now!

Russian girls are always stunning. Check out this new young lady with Women Milan.

Jessica Stam and Agyness Deyn to design! 2 more model slashes!

Coco Rocha is engaged! Congrats!! And speaking of Coco, Fashion Week Daily takes to the streets to find out who/what people think a “Coco Rocha” is...

We agree with Jezebel, why are there blondes on these covers?

And yes, more models of color on the runway, please. 16% non-white is still not enough.

How cool are Greg Kessler‘s Model Morphosis for the NY Times?

The fashion industry is filled with people with unhealthy habits. For the young models who are struggling with their weight, please don’t ever let it get to this point (and if it does, get help).

Karen Elson is Fierce with a capital “F”. Gorgeous, funny, and talented? You’ve doing better than 90% of the TV/movie stars out there, Karen!

Another wonderful young lady that we adore, Agyness Deyn shows us another side to her multi faceted life.

Fashion and media:
Another reason we love Grace Coddington and Andre Leon Talley. They are old school with a capital O.

Guy Trebay, of the NY Times talks to WWD about the new media and bloggers. See what he thinks about Tavi and Bryanboy.

Miscellaneous:
Funny, funny post on Olivier Zahm by Frockwriter.

In the wake of Alexander McQueen‘s tragic death by suicide, it is really great to see the work Daniel “Harry Potter” Radcliffe is doing. If only more people in high profile industries would give back to the world like this….

Read photographer David Benjamin Sherry’s open and wonderfully refreshing interview on being gay and how photographer Collier Schorr was his professor!

New & Improved

February 16th, 2010 |Posted by Janelle

Great casting makes the story, Vogue is always filled with familiar faces, but the ones that stand out most are the first timers. This month several girls make their debut: Steven Meisel‘s ladylike editorial boasts American Vogue first timers, Freja Beha Erichsen, Mirte Maas and Rianne Ten Haken (who returns to the pages of Vogue six years after her last appearance in 2004) alongside Wintour favorites like Karlie Kloss, Liya Kebede and Lara Stone. The photography is excellent and Grace Coddington provides her quintessential stylist’s touch but the girls are what make this story worthwhile.

Bits & Bytes: Holiday Edition 2009

December 29th, 2009 |Posted by Betty

happy-holidays
In true holiday spirit, Art & Commerce makes a donation to City Harvest. Watercolor by the incomparable Mats Gustafson.

—————————————————————————————————————

Modeling news:
For those of you who have been away for the holidays on some tropical island and are not obsessively checking the Internet every single day….. Gisele Bundchen finally names her baby.

In other “unless you’ve been under a rock or on a tropical isle” news, Tyra Banks is ending her talk show.

British Vogue highlights their 23 models to watch for 2010. Some are familiar like former MOTW’s Stephanie Rad, Keats Kolyasnikova, Frida and Heidi Rock. We love the new Portia and several other new fabulous faces.

In the on going process of adding slash to their job descriptions, Erin Wasson is rumored to start acting and Noah Mills is ALREADY acting. For those who might remember, we tweeted back in Sept about who was the top model rumored to appear in the new SATC 2… From MOTW to SATC in a mere 7 years, you go Noah! In other former MOTW news, Dolce & Gabbana favorite Adam Senn is supposedly dating Lindsay Lohan. Do what you will with that info.

Speaking of model/slash, Hyoni Kang‘s new store gets a visit by Style.com.

Jezebel’s Jenna highlights the sad plight of the industry when the unbelievable Lara Stone is considered “fat”.

Oh too cute. Coco Rocha and a gaggle of 5 year olds visit her agency.

Fashion and photography:
So sad, amazing brand PHI (designed by the amazing Andreas Melbostad) closes

OMG. You thought Vinoodh Matadin was hot now? Look at this NSFW picture from 1986.

Only because Lady Gaga was THE fashion influence of the year, check out this one man’s obsessive creation of 39 of her looks on Barbie dolls. Kinda nuts in a totally fabulous way.

2009 Lists:
Fashion Week Daily‘s Chic citizens of 2009… Here’s numbers 6-10and 1-5.

Jezebel‘s top 10 fashion successes and failures of the year. They also have a pretty good list of their top models of the decade. We would have included Kate Moss who went from a mere supermodel to a model power broker with her recent deals with Topshop.

Contrast this with French Vogue’s 30 top models of the 00′s. All we can say is that of all the INCREDIBLE photos they’ve taken of Daria Werbowy (whose had 3 VP covers in the last year and a half), Anja Rubik, Gisele Bundchen and Lily Donaldson, they chose THOSE to represent these girls??? Congrats to Kasia Struss to making the list.. nice girls don’t always finish last!

Craig from Altamira who obsessively details the models’ streetstyle has some of his best dressed list of 2009.

Miscellaneous:
In the “I just get tired from reading this post” news, Derek Blasberg, just might be the hardest partying man of 2009. Check out these exclusive pics for V Magazine from Derek’s camera.

Some of our favorite agency Xmas emails: Luke Worral’s agents at D1 have Elfed themselves; this slightly creepy, culty video filled with boys and candles from the folks at Nine Daughters and a Stereo, the hilarious card below from the team at Ford NY‘s men’s division and the people at One Management who step in front of the camera for once.

To end the year, take a look at this gorgeous editorial, The 12 days of Christmas from American Vogue Dec 98 from the inimitable team of Steven Meisel and our favorite person in fashion,Grace Coddington.

They got pictures of somebody — some asshole — I’ll never understand how editors and publishers think — showing just a famous person with blurbs all over their face. I’ll never understand why they think that would be something people would want to buy. I don’t get it.” Yes, we don’t get it either, George.
