Campaign Confidential

January 3rd, 2013 |Posted by Janelle

Luxury powerhouses have unleashed their S/S campaigns with great fanfare, but which brand’s spring outlook are you liking best? Take a look at some of the best brand new campaigns on the scene and let us know your faves in the comments.

MULBERRY

Emma Hill (Designer) | Tim Walker (Photographer) | Ronnie Cooke Newhouse and Stephen Wolstenholme at House and Holme (Art Direction) | Shona Heath (Set Design) | Jane How (Stylist) | Sam McKnight (Hair) | Val Garland (Makeup) | Meghan Collison (Model)

Tim Walker‘s dreamy imagery has come to define the Mulberry campaign look for a few seasons now and the brand’s latest starring Meghan Collison, takes the party underwater setting Meghan against a undersea backdrop of soft pastels and coral that perfectly coordinates with the line’s feminine S/S collection.

VERSACE

Giovanni Bianco (Art Director) | Daria WerbowyEdward WildingJoan SmallsKacey CarrigKate Moss &Veit Couturier  (Models)

More is always more in the world of Versace and for S/S they pull out all the stops with a stylized campaign filled with supermodels, bold color and enough drama to fill an entire operetta. Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott create a blue tinted world of beauty, sensuality and references to mythology.

GIORGIO ARMANI

Giorgio Armani (Designer)| Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott (Photographers) Models: Saskia de Brauw & Roch Barbot

Sophistication is key in the world of Armani and Saskia de Brauw serves as the perfect incarnation of the Armani woman in the brand new S/S ads. Poised, refined and of course clad in crisp suiting straight of the runway, de Brauw shines in Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott‘s seamless images.

GIVENCHY

Riccardo Tisci (Designer) | Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott (Photographer) |Carine Roitfeld (Fashion Editor/Stylist) | Mathias Augustyniak & Michael Amzalag (Art Director) Models: Francisco PeraltaKate MossMariacarla Boscono

Givenchy usually goes for high concept campaign shots, but this season the line tones it down with striking black and white portraits. The new campaign even features the ultimate scene stealer, Mariacarla Boscono‘s daughter, Marialucas.

PRADA

Miuccia Prada
(Designer) | Steven Meisel (Photographer) | Olivier Rizzo (Fashion Editor/Stylist) | Guido Palau (Hair Stylist) | Pat McGrath (Makeup Artist) | Ashley Brokaw (Casting Director) Models: Eva HerzigovaIrene HiemstraIrina KravchenkoKirsten OwenMaartje VerhoefSasha PivovarovaSaskia de BrauwSung Hee KimVanessa Axente

Miuccia’s eclectic collection finds its way onto the backs of a multi-generational cast featuring a series of notable models from the past 20 years. The striking Steven Meisel helmed campaign celebrates the uniqueness of the Spring collection and its undeniable visual impact; when you have great clothes and great models what more do you need.

Falling 4 Pre-Fall

December 6th, 2012 |Posted by Janelle

Pre-fall is in full swing and the season between seasons is providing us with plenty of eye-candy this time around. Take a look at some of our favorites so far and be sure to let us know what you’re loving in the comments.

HELMUT LANG

Model: Kel Markey / Images Courtesy Helmut Lang

Neutrals – particularly dramatic black and white – are the bread and butter of the new incarnation of Helmut Lang. Don’t let last season’s foray into bold color fool you, designers Michael and Nicole Colovos have always had a special place in their heart for a restrained color palette. The duo also loves a sharply cut leather jacket and a well applied use of ombre, so their pre-fall look was just one hit after another.

Calvin Klein Collection
Models: Magdalena Jasek, Sara Blomqvist, Katya Ryabinkina

Naturally designer Francisco Costa gave Calvin loyalists minimalism, but the brand’s pre-fall looks had an autumnal twist. Described as ‘essential classics’ Costa’s pieces were appealing reinventions of pieces every woman ought to have in her wardrobe; the perfect camel coat, the figure hugging shift, even a few pared down dresses that can go from day into evening.

GIVENCHY
Model: Ricardo Figueiredo

Givenchy always keeps us on our toes and their pre-fall offerings are no exception; leather shorts, deconstructed argyle sweaters, blazers emblazoned with the word pervert – everything is just a little off-kilter, but that keeps things exciting. Like many designers do during this season, Riccardo Tisci looked to the idea of essentials and took some of his bestselling pieces into fresh territory. Just when you think you’ve tired of those ubiquitous doberman t-shirts, Tisci gives you a remixed version of the statement look done in a digitized print.

3.1 PHILLIP LIM
Model: Valery Kaufman / Images Courtesy Phillip Lim

Easily the most sophisticated take on the biker lore that we’ve seen in ages. Fashionphiles are sure to see some Balenciaga parallels in this collection, but adapting high fashion ideas for contemporary set is part of Lim’s formula. Lim played with embellishment, adding in crystals, embroidery and loads of layering for added interest. As always accessories are on point, with a sporty brand new backpack serving as the standout piece.

Editorial Inspiration: Mona & Millicent

July 12th, 2012 |Posted by Janelle

In addition to designing for Chanel, Fendi, his eponymous line, shooting editorials, traveling the world and elevating his cat to superstar status, Karl Lagerfeld also manages to be something of a fashion historian. Look at his work you’ll see references to countless bygone eras and sartorial icons of yesteryear. In his latest story for Harper’s Bazaar, Lagerfeld looks to legendary American socialites Mona von Bismarck & Millicent Rogers, women so revered for their good taste that whole museum collections exist to catalogue their stylish lives. Imagining a fictional meeting between the two legends, Lagerfeld creates sumptuous images overloaded with decadent ensembles.

With a shock of silver hair and a penchant for labels like Balenciaga, Givenchy and Vionnet, Mona was one of the most celebrated style icons of her time. Immortalized by Dali and Truman Capote. She’s brought to life in the story by Anja Rubik, in a series of dramatic looks chosen by Andrew Richardson. The glamorous Millicent Rogers, Standard Oil Heiress and toast of NY society, favored esoteric lines like Schiaparelli and Valentina, mixed in with standards from Mainbocher & Charles James; Melissa Tammerijn plays the blond beauty with grace in Lagerfeld’s story.

Every top tier brand ushers out a new campaign each season, but only a select few push creative boundaries instead of just pushing product. With fall ads launching earlier than ever (remember the days of opening up September Vogue and experiencing new ads for the very first time) there are already several ads that impress us with their unique interpretation of their brand’s message. Take a look at our picks for most intriguing ads so far and be sure to share your selections in the comments!

Kenzo

The brand’s thrilling reboot continues with Jean Paul Goude breathing new life into the fall campaign imagery. Xiao Wen Ju & Simon Sabbah are connected in these cheeky reversible shots with a neon Kenzo logo flashing in the background. The impressive sculptural shots are a sight to behold, as is the corresponding campaign video that brings the imagery to life with beautifully abstract visuals.
