Cover to Cover

January 28th, 2013 |Posted by Janelle

We’ve been seeing a lot of Marc Jacobs’ mod influenced collection for Louis Vuitton, so it is no surprised to see it showing up on the covers of two stylish publications this month. Numero‘s sleek image by Sebastian Kim gives you two sides of of Nadja Bender, while Vogue Japan offers a girlish take on Jacobs’ designs with a coquettish image of Lindsey Wixson by Patrick Demarchelier. Both pictures present a compelling fashion moment, so it really boils down to whether you prefer your Vuitton girl seductive, or syrupy sweet.

Dansk returns with two images designed to whet readers’ appetites for more of the famed Danish magazine’s blend of art and fashion. Nadja Bender shows up again (there isn’t a magazine you won’t find Nadja in these days) looking effortlessly cool in Hasse Nielsen‘s black and white shot, but the image that grabs our attention is that of the aptly named Adonis Bosso taken by Raf Stahelin. Dressed in a debonair fedora and head to metallics, Bosso cuts an impressive figure – we can’t wait to see the accompanying editorial.

Giampaolo Sgura and Anna Dello Russo are at it again! This time the duo creates four wildly different covers for Vogue Brasil featuring Magdalena FrackowiakIzabel GoulartBette Franke and Mirte Maas. Each cover captures a completely different mood within the sexy & chic theme: from the all out glamour of Magda’s shot, Mirte’s full on Dello Russo eclecticism, Izabel’s vibrant  cover image and the purity of Bette’s Prada collection image. Each cover has its merits, but we can’t help but think that Bette’s austere Miuccia madness feels freshest.

Campaign Confidential

July 6th, 2012 |Posted by Janelle

The ads keep on coming, check out a few more of our faves from the season – take a look back at our previous campaign favorites post too.

While we can’t imagine either Nicolas Ghesquière or Steven Meisel spending a lazy weekend at the shore, the Balenciaga campaign is set in such an idyll. Fresh faces Anniek KortleveLinn ArvidssonHirschy HirschfelderJulier BuggeJuliet Ingleby and Rosie Tapner lay out on the dunes in those eccentric looks from F/W.

Simple, clean and led by a stellar cast, Chanel’s fresh ads feature Kati Nescher, Lindsey Wixson & Cora Emmanuel as styled by Carine Roitfeld. Naturally, Karl Lagerfeld is behind the camera – which depending on your perspective you either love or hate, that said the casting on this is flaw free.

Dolce & Gabbana

A taste of Italian nostalgia shot by Giampaolo Sgura and featuring Monica Bellucci, Bianca Balti and Bianca Brandolini – each image feels like a still from a Pasolini film.

Valentino once again gives us a vision of pure class from the iconic Deborah Turbeville. Elegantly color coordinated looks on Jac JagaciakCaroline Brasch Nielsen and Frida Gustavsson – what’s not to love?

When you have Joan Smalls and Karl Lagerfeld you don’t really need much else. With the natural setting and powerful poses, this new ads remind us a bit of Anja Rubik‘s S/S 10 ads for the luxe line.

La Famiglia

December 23rd, 2011 |Posted by Janelle

The beauty of family is at the heart of both of Dolce & Gabbana‘s seasonal campaigns. Inspired by the sirens of Italian cinema Anna Magnani, Monica Vitti and especially Sofia Loren, Giampaolo Sgura shot ravishing Italian beauties Monica Bellucci and Bianca Balti for the womenswear images. Mimicking the feel of lighthearted classic comedies set in Southern Italy, Sgura captured Belluci and Balti as they enjoyed “afternoons at the beach, Sundays at home, family parties, the first boyfriend, and tender moments with the children,” it all makes for a lovely set of images that represent the traditional, yet sensual side of the Dolce & Gabbana spirit.

Mariano Vivanco
‘s menswear images continue the theme with gorgeous sepia tinted portraits featuring actors Giuseppe Fiorello, Francesco Scianna, Filippo Nigro, Thomas Trabacchi, Primo Reggiani and Chiara Francini as an especially elegant family. The candid and atmospheric photos feel vintage, but those exquisite D&G separates are completely modern.

Charlotte’s Web

November 14th, 2011 |Posted by Janelle

Capturing the essence of Charlotte Rampling is not an easy task. The cinema legend’s allure is all about subtlety: she’s sexy but never sleazy, aloof but never cold. Helmut Newton encapsulated all these attributes perfectly in his famous photos 70s of the iconic beauty and now Giampaolo Sgura pays tribute to those images in Antidote Magazine. The baby-faced Anna de Rijk might not be the first name you think of when it comes to seduction, but with her cascading dark hair and piercing blue eyes she pulls off the Rampling look nicely. Added bonus, Géraldine Saglio‘s styling focuses on silk stockings and sky high heels, keeping with Antidote’s shoe fetish theme.

mdc ♥s : over the top extras

October 27th, 2011 |Posted by Janelle

Aymeline Valade works a flamboyant look in an image by Giampaolo Sgura for Vogue Japan November 2011, styled by Anna Dello Russo

Minimalism is nice, but every so often you want to kick things into high gear and really go over the top. Take a look at trendsetting editors on the street style blogs and you’ll see how much fashion loves all out exhibitionists. Whether you’re a budding Anna Dello Russo, or just in search of a little extra sparkle, we’ve got a few extras you’ll love.

Alexander Wang Metallic Devere – Already a favorite of Garance Dore and seen on the shoulders of several Wang girls this season, the Devere is an appealingly Art Deco take on the classic satchel. In a notice me color like silver, it is sure to garner a few stares.

Miu Miu Glitter and Suede shoes – When it comes to girly glitter Miu Miu has the market cornered. This season Miuccia’s favorite color appears to be shiny and the glitter and suede open toe bootie is the best variation on the trend. We’ve already seen it cropping up in editorial after editorial, not to mention on the feet of stylish accessories experts like Teen Vogue‘s Shiona Turini.

Paco Rabanne Lady Million – Naturally when you’re going for the bold, you should smell like a million bucks. Who can resist a blend of orange blossom, amber and gardenia with a hint of patchouli? Or the inventive gold nugget packaging that we’re pretty sure ADR would turn into a makeshift clutch. Lady Million is playful, yet seductive – much like campaign star Dree Hemingway.

Beauty is Life Queen Eyelashes –  Glitter. Covered. False. Lashes. Completely impractical and utterly fabulous, perfect for Halloween, an evening at your local drag bar or something wild to wear to the Gaga concert.

Tom Binns Pastelle Necklace – More is more and Binns’ candy colored gems are the cream of the crop.

MAC Wild Color Pigments – Were in love with the campaign imagery starring Cindy Sherman and the vibrant colors are sure to unleash your inner artist. Wet pigments and use them as eyeliner, mix them with Vaseline to create a lip color, add a little to your favorite blush or powder for sparkle – the only rule is there are no rules.

Judith Leiber Cupcake keychain – Because everyone needs a rhinestone covered cupcake in their life.
