Let Them Eat Cake

March 1st, 2012 |Posted by Janelle

Daniel Sannwald. (Management Artists)
Frida Gustavsson
.
Pop Magazine.

An infectious ode to all things sugary, from Tamara Rothstein selection of sexy ensembles, to Gary Card‘s pastel set and the lovely Miss Gustavsson herself, it doesn’t get much sweeter than this. Sannwald pushes the envelope beyond a simply pretty story and into a trippy and at times outlandish tale.

Campaign Candy

January 9th, 2012 |Posted by Janelle

MULBERRY

Mulberry’s spring ads are the stuff of Tumblr dreams, Lindsey Wixson, Frida Gustavsson and a giant melting ice cream cone by Tim Walker? The sugar level is off the charts, but who can resist such a sweet treat?! Shot on location in Brighton with set design by  Andy Hillman and styling by Edward Enninful, the girlish ads are joyful and creative. Those cream colored Bayswater satchels and bright high heeled wedges are almost as tempting as the massive hard candies.

ROBERTO CAVALLI

Steven Meisel takes three legendary supers and one outstanding newbie to create a classically minded campaign. Naomi Campbell, Kristen McMenamy, Karen Elson and Daphne Groeneveld join forces for a striking ad that brings to mind Avedon’s epic Versace ads from the 80s.

PROENZA SCHOULER

Natasha Poly as a modern pin up girl is a campaign concept we can get behind. Willy Vanderperre and Olivier Rizzo create an enticing series of images that capitalize on Ms. Poly’s natural allure and the appealing mix of pattern & texture found in Proenza’s spring collection. The clothes are front and center here and they look phenomenal: sign us up for a pair of those heels!

AKRIS

Akris is known for their appealing take on minimal fashions and the spring campaign takes that idea and runs with it. Karim Sadli shoots Daga Ziober in the backseat of a vintage car wearing Albert Kriemler’s gorgeous designs.

mdc ♥s : 2011 Best of Beauty

January 3rd, 2012 |Posted by Janelle

In one of the year’s most memorable beauty images Frida Gustavsson gets her lips painted gold | shot by Patrick Demarchelier for W Magazine

We primped and polished are way through dozens of products in 2011, but these were the ones we went back and reached for again and again – the absolute BEST Beauty Products we tried all year. Find out why we loved them and start 2012 off right by telling us what you loved.

REVLON COLOR BURST LIP BUTTERS
Why it made our list – With a creamy lip balm texture and 20 electric colors, the Lip Butters are an affordable luxury – as good as any high end product we tested. We would reach for any lipbalm that contained mango, shea and coconut butters, so it is wonderful to find those moisturizing ingredients in something with color payoff. Bright shades like Lollipop and Raspberry Pie are our personal favorites, but every shade is a winner and at eight bucks a pop you won’t break the bank trying them.

CHANEL VITALUMIERE AQUA
Why it made our list – Foundation for foundation-phobes. We admit to being inconsolable when Chanel discontinued our previous holy grail Teint Innocence, but this more than makes up for it. The lighter than air texture and sheer quality of this foundation make it look like your skin but better, it is pretty safe to say that Peter Philips is on a roll.

GUERLAIN TERRACOTTA FOUR SEASONS
Why it made our list – Guerlain’s bronzers have always been popular, but the four seasons is the MVP of their lineup. There wasn’t a backstage during Paris Fashion Week where we didn’t spot this popular matte bronzer in the kits of our favorite makeup artists. A must have for sculpting cheekbones, adding a touch of face brightening color and of course providing that enviable “natural” glow we saw on so many of the S/S catwalks.

BURBERRY FRESH GLOW
Why it made our list – Everyone is searching for a product that creates the lit from within look and Burberry’s unique highlighter delivers. Developed by Christopher Bailey with Wendy Rowe serving as Artistic Consultant for the line, Fresh Glow works for all skintones. Whether you mix it with your foundation or use it on its own, it gives you that gorgeous shine that seems completely natural.

KOH GEN DO CLEANSING SPA WATER
Why it made our list – We’ve raved about it before, but this Japanese line is quickly becoming one of our favorites – one swipe of this refreshing makeup remover and every speck of powder, mascara, lipstick, etc. is gone. Simply the best.

SKYN ICELAND ANGELICA LINE SMOOTHER
Why it made our list - Crows feet, laugh lines, those distressing little signs of age all smoothed out and hidden without having to deal with the sting of a doctor’s needle or any invasive treatments. For all those times you want to look your absolute best the Angelica line smoother instantly enhances the skin and fills in any little nagging imperfections.

CLARINS FACE TREATMENT OILS
Why it made our list – It just plain works. Apply in the evening before bed and wake up to refreshed, hydrated skin that looks smoother, clearer and infinitely less stressed than it did the night before: added bonus the calming aromatherapy scent.

NUDE ADVANCED CELLULAR RENEWAL MOISTURIZER
Why it made our list – If you couldn’t tell from some our previous recommendations, our skin was stressed this year and NUDE’s cellular renewal regimen was one of the things that helped to calm it down. Soothing white jasmine, shea and a whole host of nourishing goodies to keep things hydrated and looking good.

CHANTECAILLE POUDRE PERLE
Why it made our list – This ultra portable, refillable wonder has made our beauty routines easier – especially on the go. Ever have five minutes to get yourself ready on a moving train filled with commuters? This will do the trick. Part highlighting powder, part blush this guarantees you’ll look fresh as a daisy.

MAKEUP FOREVER HD POWDER
Why it made our list – Accept no substitutes. When the camera reveals each and every pore (not to mention every single flaw imaginable), this is what beauty experts dust on to conceal those tell tale pores and hide shine. We’ve spotted this on shoots, backstage during NYFW and even in the makeup trailer on the set of a movie – even if you aren’t gearing up to be in onscreen this is a must have.

MORROCCANOIL RESTORATIVE HAIR MASK
Why it made our list – Saving our dry, distressed and mistreated hair one strand at a time with gentle TLC that conditions and comforts.

ESTEE LAUDER SUMPTUOUS EXTREME MASCARA
Why it made our list – Instant badaboom lashes that don’t leave us looking like a raccoon two hours later. One of the many Estee goodies we’ve spotted Tom Pecheux using backstage and absolutely had to try out for ourselves.

The Prada Persuasion

June 17th, 2011 |Posted by Janelle

Miuccia Prada keeps us on our toes; whether that is with idiosyncratic collections, or one of a kind imagery depends on the day, but one could never accuse camp Prada of being boring. This season’s campaign is a testament to the brand’s ability to think outside the box, their F/W image is all about the next generation of modeling stars. As such you will find no familiars amongst the stunning cast (well maybe just one – budding supermodel Frida Gustavsson also stars) Ashley Brokaw went in search of girls with the Prada je ne sais quoi, that certain special something that has defined the brand’s faces from Sasha Pivovarova to Daria Werbowy. Only the newest of the new need apply – some of the campaign’s stars haven’t even walked shows yet.

In the first snaps to hit the internet the gorgeous Kelly Mittendorf (Marilyn) gives a star making turn in a beautiful shot by Steven Meisel. The image is pure Prada and Kelly’s one of a kind look is certain to grab the attention of casting directors and model fans alike. BONUS: Gorgeous newcomers Ondria Hardin (Ford) and Antonia Wesseloh (Ford) make equally alluring debuts in the campaign’s two new images!

Casting by Ashley Brokaw | Styling by Melissa Klitzke-Rubini | Hair by Guido Palau | Makeup by Pat McGrath

If Looks Could Kill

June 13th, 2011 |Posted by Janelle

Peter Lindbergh brings his masterful touch to the pages of American Vogue with an elegant story featuring Lara Stone, Frida Gustavsson and True Blood star Alexander Skarsgård. Taking cues from 40s film noir and the unrivaled glamour of days past, Grace Coddington styles the trio in retro looks from Marc Jacobs and Proenza Schouler. Lara plays femme fatale in sumptuous furs and red lips, while Frida is an unaffected ingenue in mary-janes and classic gowns: which of these beauties can Mr. Skarsgård trust? No one knows for sure, but Lindbergh’s atmospheric photos keep us guessing.

mdc ♥s : Skin Rx

March 25th, 2011 |Posted by Janelle

Frida Gustavsson always looks fresh as a daisy

Everyone can use a little pick me up; whether you are de-stressing from the rigors of fashion month, or just in need of a little R&R. Here are a few insider secrets to help you look your best, each one tried and tested by the MDC team. Think of these goodies as your fail safe beauty lineup to address any and all problems. You’ll be looking as good as Frida in no time!

FATIGUED AND IT SHOWS? Sunday Riley Good Genes

No matter who you are everyone wants to have the look of good genes and now with a boost from Sunday Riley you can. The brand’s Good Genes treatment promises to “plump fine lines, reveal brighter, newer skin, and improve circulation” not a bad combination. Used daily the treatment can reduce dark spots and improve texture, used as a pick me up it can make you look flawless for an evening out. We tested it out and it added some much needed glow to our sallow post-fashion week complexions. Diane Kendal was spotted using this on models backstage at Vanessa Bruno and we hear that Chanel campaign star Blake Lively is a fan of the line too.

Available at Sunday Riley.com & Barneys NY

NEED A REFRESHER? La Mer Gel Cream & Moisturizing Lotion

Creme de la Mer is a fashion staple; Kate Moss slathers her whole body in it, multiple models love its rich formulation and makeup artists can’t get enough. For a dose of La Mer’s signature hydration in a lighter formula give their Gel Cream and Moisturizing Lotion a try. The Gel Cream is cool to the touch and feels incredible, while the Moisturizing lotion is lighter than air and gives combination skin exactly what it needs to look its best.

Available at Creme de la Mer.com & Saks Fifth Avenue

EYE PUFFINESS? DARK CIRCLES? Estee Lauder Idealist Cooling Eye Illuminator

Bedrest is a necessity, but with the fast pace of modern life, we don’t always get enough of it. As a result eyes can sometimes look puffy and dark circles can develop resulting in a tired, worn out look. Never fear, Estee’s Cooling Eye Illuminator takes care of all that and then some. With a patent pending ceramic tip and extracts of sea algae, caffeine and sucrose, this little tool massages the delicate eye area and instantly brightens and refreshes. We tested this out during a busy week and it helped us look alert even when running on 2 hours of sleep.

Available starting in April at Bloomingdales

LOST YOUR GLOW? Guerlain L’OR Radiance Concentrate with Pure Gold

Guerlain’s gold flecked marvel, L’OR is a little touch of luxury in your skincare routine. A cooling gel infused with real gold flecks may seem extravagant, but once you see how it covers fine lines and provides a natural glow beneath makeup, you’re sure to be impressed. We hear Natalia Vodianova is a fan and after the compliments we got on our skin while wearing it, we’re converts too.

Available at Sephora

Just Cavalli

November 17th, 2010 |Posted by Janelle

Leave it to Patrick Demarchelier and Alex White to add a touch of class to Roberto Cavalli’s in your face outfits. The duo joins forces in the latest W to pay tribute to Cavalli’s 40 years in the business and together they create a lovely black and white story with Frida Gustavsson. The mid-air poses and simple background are studio shoot staples, but White’s tribal themed is beautiful and fresh.
