Women on Top

March 13th, 2014 |Posted by Janelle

Who can resist the allure of a magazine dedicated to dynamic, intelligent and take charge women! David Vivirido and Francesco Sourigues, the forces behind Hercules Magazine unveil their vision for women with Vamp Magazine, a tour de force take on fashion dedicated to those who are unafraid to speak their minds and express themselves via the best in power-dressing. The cover tagline “Being the woman you’ve always wanted to be” offers a compelling call to action – it isn’t enough to just wear pretty clothes, a girl has got to take on the world with gusto. The founders offered a mission statement of sorts to Business of Fashion and described the glossy’s ideal reader in no uncertain terms, “Vamp is for women who want to get ahead, stamp their foot and make a statement.”

We love the sound of that and the look of the 6 incredible new covers, which feature an impressive lineup of modeling fixtures. Each cover star is an impressive woman with personality to spare, from industry standard bearers like Carolyn Murphy and Liya Kebede, multi-hyphenate Rosie Huntington Whiteley, campaign queen Karmen Pedaru and in demand it-girls Andreea Diaconu and Emily DiDonato.

Hoarders

June 17th, 2013 |Posted by Janelle

An apartment full of old newspapers and decaying takeout containers isn’t a particularly glamourous setting, but Interview takes familiar imagery from shows like Hoarders and Buried Alive to create a fashion story that explores the darker side of obsessive collecting. Ludivine Poiblanc (New York: Management + Artists, Paris: Management + Artists) creates a wardrobe fit for a contemporary Miss Havisham using choice pieces from the pre-fall collections. Fabien Baron shoots Kati Nescher in a macabre style and the end result is one of the most original and haunting stories of the moment.

Movie Moment

February 4th, 2013 |Posted by Janelle

We’ve all seen enough fashion films featuring slow motion models whose hair blows elegantly in the wind and though there is nothing wrong with that per se, the most engaging campaign movies we’re seeing this year break from the tried and true formulas. Going for over the top humour, cinematic imagery or full on designer commentary, these brand new campaigns excite and delight.

T BY ALEXANDER WANG S/S 13

We last saw Anjelah Johnson’s Bon Qui Qui character on old episodes of Mad TV, but she’s back and has upgraded from her old job at King Burger. Starring as a sales associate at Wang’s trendy Soho boutique, Bon Qui Qui manages to insult everyone from Alessandra Ambrosio to A$AP Rocky with her in your face brand of customer service. For anyone who has ever worked retail, or had an especially crazy shopping experience this clip will make you crack a smile.

CALVIN KLEIN PRESENTS PROVOCATIONS

Calvin Klein has a long history of memorable advertisements that push boundaries with a strong dose of sex appeal and their latest fashion film, Provocations adds to their oeuvre with a slick Fabien Baron helmed vision of minimalist eroticism. Starring actor, Alexander Skarsgard and Suvi Koponen, the avant garde ad provides some truly remarkable imagery.

LANVIN S/S13

Alber Elbaz is one of fashion’s true characters, so it is great to see the Lanvin campaign inject some of the designer’s personality into the mix with Elbaz providing running commentary on the Steven Meisel images of Christian GarciaDaria StrokousKarlie KlossKristoffer HasslevallMichael Lange and Saskia de Brauw. Alber’s enthusiasm is downright contagious – we wouldn’t mind hearing his commentary on every Lanvin video from here on!

East Meets West

November 13th, 2012 |Posted by Janelle

Asia and its diverse cultures have long had an unmistakable impact on the industry, but in recent years the influence has been especially prevalent. The growth of the Asian market and the rise of a new generation of influential Asian talents has prompted designers and photographers to look East in search of inspiration. The F/W runways were filled with pieces whose details seemed cribbed from traditional Chinese, Japanese, and Korean fashions. Two fresh editorials showcase the season’s East Asian-inspired fashions in uniquely beautiful ways.

First Fabien Baron reinterprets the myth of the samurai in Interview with a striking and suitably stark story that owes as much to history as it does to larger-than-life, action-packed anime. Meghan Collison stars in Baron’s expressive fantasy and brandishes a katana as she poses in looks from Haider Ackermann, Gareth Pugh, and Issey Miyake. Karl Templer‘s styling prowess is on full display, even as he mixes together the perfect modern approximation of the samurai look. | View the full story on Interview.com

Vogue China‘s interpretation is no less elegant, but the approach is softer and sexier. Karim Sadli shoots the always alluring Liu Wen in pieces that focus on rich embroidery and detailed pattern. Set against the refined backdrop of an airy drawing room and featuring a host of Balmain, Proenza, and Dries van Noten selected by Alastair McKimm, the story offers an alternative imagining of this look. There are no well-dressed warriors or brandished swords, just a beautiful girl looking especially chic.
