Sweet Charity

Nothing brings a great cause to light like an imaginative ad that captures the heart of an issue with intelligence and wit. Of course, a few of the world’s most beautiful models stripping down to their skivvies certainly doesn’t hurt either. Cameron Russell, Rianne Ten Haken, Rachel Alexander, Dorothea Barth Jorgensen, Crystal Renn, Shannan Click, Olya Ivanisevic, Hanne Gaby Odiele, Alla Kostromichova, Nicole Trunfio and Heidi Mount join forces to bring awareness to 350.org and the International Day of Climate Awareness via a humorous spot that has the girls peeling off layers due to the heat caused by the rising carbon count. The ad conceived by Cameron herself, is a smart and sexy way to get attention for a great cause. MDC spoke to the always eloquent Cameron for a little insight into why this cause is so important and how the project itself got off the ground.

MDC: There are so many great people involved in this video – how did you organize such a project?

Cameron: All the girls are my friends and loved shooting the video for a good cause, so that part was relatively easy to pull together.

The whole project happened from start to finish in a little under two weeks and 300 phone calls–who knew production was so complicated!

MDC: On a personal level what made you want to get involved with this cause?

Cameron: I think Climate Change is the most important issue of our time. In the history of the world all 5 mass extinctions have been accompanied by massive climate change, so we are facing an incredible serious threat.  In fact we are technically in the 6th mass extinction right now, and it is the first mass extinction being attributed to human kind. My all time hero Tibor Kalman showed the world the ability of mass media to convey serious images and create real discussion (think 90′s Benneton ad’s of people with AIDS). Climate Change which is often seen as very political or scientific needs to be made a people’s issue. My hope is that this ad helps re-brand environmentalism.

Keeps Gettin’ Better

October 2nd, 2009 |Posted by Janelle

Every month Vogue Italia manages to keep us on our toes with its choice of cover subject and this month the surprise is especially pleasant. After a six year absence Rianne Ten Haken returns to the cover of VI with fiery hair and a sultry attitude. This cover plus the incredible season Miss Ten Haken has been having makes for the official haute comeback of the year.

Add to this the unmistakable presence of one Karlie Kloss, the unstoppable force that just keeps getting better and better with every editorial, cover or campaign. A Vogue Italia cover is the icing on the cake for a newcomer who has managed to continuously awe with her much heralded skills in front of the camera. With hot pink hair and an unexpectedly saucy demeanor, Karlie dominates every frame that she’s in.

Steven Meisel has quite a treat in store for us this month – the party to the limit action spied in this preview is sure to whet your appetite for the full issue. Iris Strubegger, Dorothea Barth Jorgensen and Simon Nessman all make appearances in what is sure to be an exciting affair.

Burberry’s Beat

September 24th, 2009 |Posted by Janelle

Frothy pastels and lighter than air fabrics aside, the freshest thing at Burberry this season was the stunning cast. Handpicked by Barbara Nicoli, the young and energetic lineup featured a slew of faces so fresh that there were even a few we hadn’t seen before. Fashion thrives on newness but the great thing about this lineup was how well it represented the house’s ideals. The 25th Anniversary of London fashion week was the perfect time to reinforce all that Burberry stands for – youth, British eccentricity, tradition and just a touch of rock and roll ease to make it all palatable.

The multi-ethnic cast of beauties was completely in line with the diversity and vitality of London and best of all everyone looked smashing in Christopher Bailey’s collection. How lovely was rising star Taylor Kraemer look in her signature trench? Were you Googling to find out just who the mystery brunette beauty was -  Nicole Hofman is her name for those who were searching. Among the other pleasant surprises were appearances by Gracie Carvalho and an opening slot filled by Anna de Rijk.

A Mighty Wind

July 27th, 2009 |Posted by Janelle

You can almost feel the cool breeze when you look at Steven Meisel‘s shots for Alberta Ferretti. The windswept campaign features Madisyn Ritland, Dorothea Barth Jorgensen, Viktoriya Sosonkina and Nimue Smit lounging in a library as the books blow by. All the girls look elegant in Ferretti’s chic creation and the wind motif makes for a unique visual.

24 Hour Party People

June 8th, 2009 |Posted by Janelle

The nightlife scene of early 80s New York was a playground for club kids and jet setters alike and this month Steven Meisel recreates the fun for Vogue Italia. With Meghan Collison, Dorothea Barth Jorgensen, Julia Hafstrom, Nimue Smit, Lucas R, Sara Blomqvist, Marcel Castenmiller, Daniel Hicks & Anna de Rijk playing party goers and Karl Templer‘s authentic Reagan-era styling were in for a wonderfully retro ride. Granted, 1980s references have been done to death but there is something appealingly lighthearted about the youthful cast and their vibrant energy that enlivens every shot.

Bits and Bytes: 10 Men Summer 09

May 26th, 2009 |Posted by Betty

Allen by Sean Thomas for 10 Men Summer 2009. pic from 10′s website.

10 Men Summer 2009, ph: Sean Thomas. Pic from one of our favorite magazines’website. And yes, they have a blog!  Welcome aboard!

—————–

Because of the long Memorial Day weekend in the US, we have a jam packed bits and bytes for you….

Check out top stylist Nicola Formichetti‘s interview in the Telegraph (and get a load of his supercool apartment).

Remember model Mark Hug, who did Ralph Lauren and Versace as well as Abercrombie & Fitch? Apparently he’s casting Abercrombie now!

Jesus Luz talks on Brazilian TV. Here MIB translates some of it.

Dorothea Barth Jorgensen, our day in the life of model this past fashion week, is interviewed by Ponyryder!

Here’s a post on some of your favorite Brazilian models’ style.

Sao Paulo Fashion Week has reached an agreement with the Sao Paulo public ministry to fight racism. “São Paulo Fashion Week has the legal duty to suggest that all designers and labels include at least 10% of black or indigenous models on the castings for the shows.” If the designers don’t, they could be fined for not meeting the 10% quota.

Vogue Hommes Japan interviews Alexander Wang.

4 things wrong and 1 thing right. Here’s some more insight into the modeling drama, The Beautiful Life. It stars Mischa Barton, Elle McPherson and is produced by Ashton Kutcher, himself an ex-model.

If you missed the stars in Cannes for AMFAR, get a look here. Look at how glamorous Claudia Schiffer, Peaches Geldorf, Lily Cole and Carine Roitfeld all look.

Here’s a little less glamorous side to the modeling world. Lily Cole shows us what all those years of jamming her feet into high, tight gorgeous shoes does for them.
