Love by H&M

April 20th, 2012 |Posted by Janelle

H&M offers a kiss for a cause with their latest campaign for Fashion Against Aids. Directed by Dan Martensen and featuring a cast of model couples, the ad is cool, romantic and offers a look at the most important thing there is – love. Of course H&M isn’t just offering lip service – 25% of the purchase price of all Fashion Against Aids items goes towards AIDS Prevention. MDC caught up with the campaign’s casting directors Daniel Peddle & Drew Dasent at Daniel Peddle Casting to find out more about the ad and the process behind the scenes.

MDC: What was the most enjoyable aspect of casting this campaign?

Daniel and Drew: Working with Jenny Friedberg at Creative Chaos on such a positive campaign and meeting such amazingly diverse real couples in love.

MDC: Fashion has always been such a huge support in the fight against AIDS. What other charities or initiatives have caught your eye?

Daniel and Drew: Doctors Without Borders does incredible work, Operation Smile is another favorite of ours which is enjoying a boost from supporters in fashion like Lydia Hearst and J. Lindeberg. We also are big fans of the work of God’s Love We Deliver.

MDC: What do you hope that people will take away after viewing this campaign?

Daniel and Drew: That we really are all the same and love has no boundaries.

Girls on Film

July 20th, 2011 |Posted by contributor

3.1 Phillip Lim “Girls On Bikes” Women’s FW11 Collection from 3.1PhillipLim on Vimeo.

What could be better than leisurely biking through the picturesque New York City streets? Biking while dressed head-to-toe in pieces from 3.1 Phillip Lim‘s F/W 2011 collection. San Francisco-based photographer and filmmaker Andrew Paynter collaborates once again with the designer on a lookbook video that supremely embodies the spirit of the Phillip Lim woman: brave, independent, and impeccably dressed. Models Karlijn, Xiao Wen Ju, and Kasia Wrobel, casting by Daniel Peddle Casting, pedal through the city with glamour and ease to showcase the wearability of the entire collection. Bicycles may very well be the must-have accessory for fall! Click here to view the film.

Kristina Salinovic transforms for the aptly titled Evanescent Metamorphoses, the newest film from Karl Lagerfeld showcasing the Chanel Fall-Winter 2011/12 Pre-collection. In this latest installment, the gender lines are blurred as Salinovic moves from her signature androgynous state toward a more feminine version of herself, all the while draped in Lagerfeld’s sumptuous creations. The dream-like quality of the film is the perfect setting for a wardrobe composed entirely of Chanel. Click here to view the film. (reviews by Lynley Flanagan)

Bits & Bytes: Manic for McQueen

May 4th, 2011 |Posted by Betty

Windswept and rainy New York seems a fitting day for the opening of the Costume Institute’s Alexander McQueen exhibit. Hear Andrew Bolton (curator of the exhibit) talk about it on the Met’s blog.

More McQueen links:

ALT expounds on his best dressed list at the Met Gala.

Check out some of the ultra chic arrivals for the Met/McQueen Gala on McQueen’s facebook page.

The Cut takes a video tour through the exhibit.

And if you haven’t see it yet, check out our MDX feature story on the Met/McQueen exhibit.

Other fashion/designer news:

Visionaire‘s new issue will be guest edited by Riccardo Tisci; with Lea T and Lara Stone set to star in it, expect magic.

I know it seems sooo long ago (5 days) but if you didn’t get to read Karl and Donatella’s reaction to THAT dress, here are the verdicts on WWD.

Wow, Fashionista is REAAAALLLLY good at sniffing these out.

Upcoming events:

Daniel Peddle, our favorite casting director/painter, has a new series called Undertow, curated by Nicola Vassell, with the opening reception TOMORROW, May 5th, at NP Art Center, 6-8pm (Christie St, corner Delancey).

Fashionista hosts a panel, May 9th, with a cool lineup of industry people.

Kate Dillon, our favorite plus size model/mommy is doing a run/walk for her charity. Here’s a note from the lovely Ms Dillon: “If you cannot make the 5K I would greatly appreciate your support. You can sponsor me via my Crowdrise page – no pledge is too small and 100% of the money I raise will go to supporting Komera Scholarships. Komera Scholarships include full tuition at a boarding school, uniforms, health insurance, sanitary care, and transportation and are given annually to girls in rural Rwanda who have the desire and the drive to achieve secondary education, but who lack the resources to do so. Just $1.37 a day can send a girl to secondary school – $500 a year to give a motivated young girl the opportunity to transform her life out of poverty.

Bits & Bytes: Asian Revolution

January 26th, 2011 |Posted by Betty

Image from Style.com

To all those who say Givenchy Haute Couture 2011 casting was just a “gimmick”: As an Asian person, it makes me deliriously happy that a blue chip designer who references the East ACTUALLY uses Asian models. (And the clothes were, of course, supremely divine). For his just finished men’s collection, check out the perfectly cast show by the trailblazing team of Daniel Peddle and Drew Dasent.

Fashion news:

See the elusive Martine Sitbon on Showstudio.

I am getting tired of the way girls walk in those high shoes.”
Karl Lagerfeld during his Chanel Couture Spring 2011 interview. Women’s toes/arches everywhere breathe a sigh of relief.

Calling all young ‘uns. Fashionista has the best college majors for breaking into the biz. Just know that once you get in, you are NEVER getting out!

Modeling news:

Art & Commerce, who always has amazing polaroids of the models has a new blog address.

The Ford Supermodel of the World winner has been chosen and it’s a beautiful Filipina, Danica Magpantay.

Jed Root’s new model agency has arrived.

Ah who remembers the good old days of modeling when both Paul Rowland and Michael Flutie had that unbelievable passion and unerring eye. The Imagist talks all about it.

Miscellaneous:

Fashionologie has the Bill Cunningham trailer. We love him.

Fashion Copious has a hilarious (and true)rant on digital magazines’ #1 mistake.

Bits & Bytes: Backstage Captured

June 16th, 2010 |Posted by Betty

Boys’ First Looks, gouache, watercolor, chalk, graphite & frisket on paper
50″ x 42″, Paris. Backstage at Givenchy Men’s show June 2009.

For you West Coasters, casting director and artist Daniel Peddle‘s show Backstage is in San Francisco for 3 more weeks. We adore Daniel’s dreamy watercolors works which not only captures the ephemeral world of backstage but transforms the normal hecticness into a surreal, contemplative realm.

Fashion news:

Wow, do we love Daphne Guiness, who bought Isabella Blow’s entire wardrobe. “Like any artist, it should not be dispersed, but remain as a monument with people having access to it,” said Ms. Guinness.

Nicola Formichetti rumored to be Thierry Mugler’s new artistic director…. True or false?

Brits invade France. “With Pugh probably in at Mugler, it seems like Paris’ major houses are getting a British makeover. Giles Deacon just took over the helm of Emanuel Ungaro with help from Katie Grand and Phoebe Philo has been holding it down in Paris for years, recently at Celine and previously at Chlöe (where fellow Brit Hannah MacGibbon currently resides).”

Harold Tillman (owner of Jaeger and Aquascutum and President of British Fashion Council) was awarded a CBE; Designer Tamara Mellon and uber photographer Nick Knight were awarded OBE’s from the Queen. That’s a pretty big deal for those who didn’t know about it.

Modeling news:

Constance, Freja, Natasha, Sasha, Sessilee. If you haven’t seen the preview for the Loic Prigent see it here now documentary for French Vogue, . A fascinating glimpse into the fabulous and oft times lonely life of the new supermodels.

Christy Turlington is not just a supermodel on the outside but a pretty super person on the inside. Check out her new documentary.

Dorothea Barth Jorgensen, on her really cool blog, interviews James Tinnelly from Women whose love and passion for the industry knows no bounds.

Agyness Deyn may be one of our favorite models ever for her awesome personality, her new website makes us even more of a fan.

Photographer Lara Rossignol found these long ago pics of Linda Evangelista; what’s great is the story she tells of Linda and why Miss E will always be the best supermodel ever.

Miscellaneous:

Check out new online magazine, Omit.

Photographers, you have 5 days till the deadline for PDN’s Fashion Photography competition.

Steven Klein, on his first music video, explains the Lady Gaga video.
