First Look: HERO Magazine

October 21st, 2015 |Posted by jonathanshia

Few cities have been as reflective of the past half-century of American life as Detroit, from white flight and the decline of manufacturing through crumbling infrastructure and abandoned neighborhoods to creative millennial reinvention and post-bankruptcy renewal. “Detroit gets lots of attention, and not necessarily for the best reasons,” explained James West and Fabien Kruszelnicki, the editors-in-chief of HERO Magazine, about their decision to dedicate the latest issue of their menswear magazine to the ever-shifting metropolis. “It had a lot of bad press, about violence and volatility, about people moving there for cheap rents, but we felt like it was a place that was also somehow new, a place where everything hadn’t been decided already. It has the space to redefine itself, which is quite a big deal.”

The British actor Nicholas Hoult takes the cover, shot and styled by Venetia Scott (Camilla Lowther Management), but the rest of the issue is a celebration of Detroit in all its promise and possibility. Kruszelnicki offers a “Detroit Survey,” street casting an overview of the city’s youth styled by Zarina Humayun, while Alessio Boni and Gro Curtis capture new face Robbi (TIAD) in hidden spaces amongst the urban sprawl. Nicole Maria Winkler and Adam Winder pay homage to the city’s vanishing automobile industry, and Dominick Sheldon (Creative and Partners) and Andrew Mukamal offer an eclectic vision of a promising “New America.” “There’s a sense that Detroiters have had to fend for themselves, and that says a lot about the way the creative scene is developing there,” say West and Kruszelnicki. “It’s a city with a lot of history that America kind of brushed aside, but now it’s becoming the personification of a new kind of American Dream, a place where anything is possible.” Take an exclusive first look at the new issue, out this week, below.

It will coincide with the meeting of Barack Obama & Pres. Lula of Brazil. There will be speeches by various senators & politicians and much media coverage. The Exclusives (updated)

February 19th, 2009 |Posted by Betty

The industry always excitedly waits for the Calvin show as it never fails to debut some of the season’s most coveted faces.

The consistently powerful casting by Maida and Rami ushered in the arrival of 16 year old Louise from Belgium, winner of the Elite Model Look Europe 2008. Addison Gill, the Canadian winner of the V/Supreme model contest emerged in the stellar lineup and everyone finally undestood why she was curiously MIA this past week. Perhaps the most exciting exclusive was the 17 year old American, Lyndsey from Click Models, scoring the first Calvin show exclusive for a young woman of color. Lyndsey was found by Click on MDC’s scouting feature! 17 year old Canadian Bojana from IMG was a dark haired beauty, a welcome change from the blondes galore.

Some other tidbits from the Camilla Nickerson styled show.. Jac (MDC’s top F/W 09 newcomer) opened and closed Calvin; we can say Jac is officially cleaning up this fashion week. Other new faces appearing for their first time in Calvin were Hannah (another MDC top newcomer) and the new faces at Women Direct, Alla and Dorothea.

Garrett the body

July 15th, 2008 |Posted by Betty

Click’s Garrett Neff has some big shoes to fill. He’s the first model to appear in the iconic Calvin Klein underwear campaign, after the twice Oscar nominated actor, Djimon Hounsou lit up the billboards last year. Back in 1992, the Herb Ritts lensed campaign (for those of you too young to remember) helped launch the careers of Mark Wahlberg and Kate Moss. Bruce Weber, who shot the legendary pics with Tom Hintnaus more than 25 years ago shoots the current Garrett series. From what we’ve seen of Garrett backstage, we think he’s going to more than hold his own with those model giants.
