First Look : Blown Away

July 9th, 2013 |Posted by Janelle

Anyone who paid close attention to the collections can tell you about the season’s biggest trend – volume, but few can bring it to life the way V Magazine can. Sølve Sundsbø and Beat Bolliger take the larger than life proportions glimpsed on the runway and capture them in all their expansive glory on the back of Suvi Koponen. Luxe pieces from Giorgio ArmaniPradaDior and Chanel are showcased in glorious fashion and the explosive hair by Didier Malige works perfectly with the voluminous theme.

Star Powered

May 14th, 2013 |Posted by Janelle

Campaign season is in full swing and the brands are rolling out campaigns heavy on the star power. From top tier models to Hollywood royalty, the season’s stars are bigger and brighter than ever.

SAINT LAURENT

Hedi Slimane and Freja Beha Erichsen is a match made in heaven. Who better to embody the rock n’roll obsessed designer’s laid back vision for Saint Laurent than fashion’s queen of cool. No wonder she’s fronting the line’s permanent collection, a seasonless set of bestsellers guaranteed to be around for years. Sporting the androgynous wardrobe of skinny pants and leather jackets designed by Slimane, Freja looks every inch the rockstar.

DONNA KARAN

The erotic undercurrent of Karan’s urbane fall collection is brought to the forefront in steamy ads starring the dream team of Catherine McNeil and Andres Velencoso Segura. The images depicting an encounter between artist and muse were shot by Mikael Jansson and the campaign’s sumptuous, cinematic feel that leaves us hoping there will be an accompanying film.

CHANEL

From the moment Chanel staged a show in Linlithgow, Tilda Swinton seemed like the obvious choice for the campaign. The Scottish actress wears Lagerfeld’s highland inspired collection with flair and provides yet another fashion moment for the record books.

Blast from the Past: Mirabella

January 15th, 2013 |Posted by Janelle

The news is always going on about the death of print, but what happens when a familiar favorite magazine really does go away forever? Fans of 90s fashion will fondly remember Mirabella, sitting on the newsstand alongside issues of Elle, Bazaar and Vogue. From 1989 to 2000 the magazine founded by  fashion fixture and former editor -in -chief of American Vogue, Grace Mirabella offered up a no-nonsense take on fashion. Appealing to women who valued not only style, but substance the magazine was chock full of the era’s trademarks: supermodels, shoulder pads and colorful imagery filled with designs from the likes of Yohji Yamamoto, and Helmut Lang.

Even though the days of Mirabella have long since passed, time hasn’t stripped the publication of its charms. Looking back there are a great many aspects of Mirabella that still feel contemporary: Sarah Moon’s haunting photography is just as relevant today as it was nearly two decades ago (check the latest Valentino campaign if you need proof) and Christy Turlington – a perennial Mirabella fave – is still one of the industry’s great beauties. Today’s obsession with model-style seems foreshadowed by Mirabella’s sleek Glen Luchford editorial styled by none other than Kate Moss and it’s hard to think of a glossy that wouldn’t jump at the chance to publish a feature along these lines today. Styles may come and go but Ines de la Fressange still turns heads as trendsetter for the ages and Regan Cameron’s images of the legendary French muse are an enduring delight.
