A Furry Affair

August 1st, 2013 |Posted by models.com

It’s that time of year again, summer is coming to an end and the highly anticipated September issues will soon be taking over the magazine shelves. Vogue Japan has Cara Delevingne on its cover, but let’s set our focus inside the magazine, on Catherine McNeil and her mile-long legs. In “A Furry Affair”, photographed by Emma Summerton, McNeil is captured looking perfectly polished and sophisticated in glam furs, strappy sandals and satchels, a chic black bob, and deep red lips, and holds a beautifully mysterious gaze away from the camera. Take a look at the breathtaking editorial below, which completely captures the ‘wow’ factor of the anticipated issue.

Prada Persuasion

June 27th, 2013 |Posted by Janelle

Prada‘s elegant fall collection comes to life with a thrilling new campaign by Steven Meisel. In previous seasons the brand has gone for high concept ads and elaborate set ups, but for fall the focus is all on the clothes and the cast. The mix of striking new faces alongside seasoned fashion veterans highlights the universal appeal of Miuccia Prada’s designs and reinforces the idea that a Prada ensemble is the right choice for women of all ages.

Star Powered

May 14th, 2013 |Posted by Janelle

Campaign season is in full swing and the brands are rolling out campaigns heavy on the star power. From top tier models to Hollywood royalty, the season’s stars are bigger and brighter than ever.

SAINT LAURENT

Hedi Slimane and Freja Beha Erichsen is a match made in heaven. Who better to embody the rock n’roll obsessed designer’s laid back vision for Saint Laurent than fashion’s queen of cool. No wonder she’s fronting the line’s permanent collection, a seasonless set of bestsellers guaranteed to be around for years. Sporting the androgynous wardrobe of skinny pants and leather jackets designed by Slimane, Freja looks every inch the rockstar.

DONNA KARAN

The erotic undercurrent of Karan’s urbane fall collection is brought to the forefront in steamy ads starring the dream team of Catherine McNeil and Andres Velencoso Segura. The images depicting an encounter between artist and muse were shot by Mikael Jansson and the campaign’s sumptuous, cinematic feel that leaves us hoping there will be an accompanying film.

CHANEL

From the moment Chanel staged a show in Linlithgow, Tilda Swinton seemed like the obvious choice for the campaign. The Scottish actress wears Lagerfeld’s highland inspired collection with flair and provides yet another fashion moment for the record books.

A Brief History of Actors & Models

May 11th, 2012 |Posted by Janelle

It is a proven fact that Hollywood actors cannot resist models – Leonardo Dicaprio we’re looking at you – so it is no surprise that magazines frequently pair actors & models together in covers and in editorials. We’re not sure why magazines always go for the actor + models combo instead of say actresses and male models (c’mon someone get Scarlett Johansson and Sean O’Pry  together already) but it is a proven formula that can produce beautiful results.

Or incredibly awkward and somewhat confusing results. Lets take a look back at some of our favorite model meets actor moments – the good, the bad and the just plain weird.

2012: W Magazine  : Tom Cruise + Abbey Lee Kershaw & Edita Vilkeviciute by Mario Sorrenti

W Magazine knows how to push all the right buttons don’t they? What better way to promote the blissfully cheesy 80s jukebox musical Rock of Ages than to put its star on the cover looking like a latter day Bret Michaels? Edita Vilkeviciute and Abbey Lee Kershaw are bringing the heat, but we can’t help but feel that Cruise looks more than a little uncomfortable. Perhaps this is simply his version of bored rock star blasé, but he manages to make standing between two of the world’s most beautiful girls look like a chore; to be honest he had more chemistry with Jeremy Renner in MI:4.

2012: Vogue Espana Clive Owen & Toni Garrn by Alexi Lubomirski

Love Toni, Love Clive. Love the city of Paris. Still he looks like her dad in this. Sorry. Unless they were going for the whole “cool dad takes his glamazon daughter to France thing”, if so then it totally works.

2012: American Vogue - Michael Fassbender and Natalia Vodianova by Craig McDean

Let’s be honest they make the ultimate austere couple.

2012: American Vogue - Eddie Redmayne & Karlie Kloss by Mario Testino

Young love minus the pimples.

2011: American Vogue – Jeremy Irvine & Arizona Muse by David Sims

Ok ok. This is a blatant promo for the film War Horse, but hey it made for an amazing editorial, atmospheric, rich and a showcase for some spectacular fashion.

2010 American Vogue - Ewan McGregor & Natalia Vodianova by Peter Lindbergh

Are you starting to see how much American Vogue likes this concept?

2009: American Vogue - Morgan Freeman & Lara Stone by Bruce Weber

Lara Stone and Morgan Freeman taking a walk around New Orleans, oh to have been a fly on the wall for this shoot…

2008: American Vogue - Jon Hamm & Catherine McNeil by Mario Testino

Let Don Draper show you how it’s done. McNeil and Hamm had a great rapport in all their images, in his Vogue profile he describes her as, “adorable and sweet and so much younger than me that it is terrifying.” Age concerns aside the Testino shoot struck the right balance between glamourous fashion fantasy and celebrity profile.

2006: Vanity Fair - George Clooney & Gemma Ward by Norman Jean Roy

The old Hollywood director and his brand new muse – is it too early to label an editorial a modern classic?

2006: American Vogue – Eric Bana & Gisele Bundchen by Mario Testino

Gisele gets roped into this sort of thing a lot…

2005: American Vogue - Josh Hartnett & Gemma Ward

Can you tell that this gorgeous duo started dating after this was shot?

2004: American Vogue Daria Werbowy and Jake Gyllenhaal

Going out on a limb and saying that Jake had the most fun on this shoot.

1992: Kyle Maclachlan & Linda Evangelista for Barneys

In the years prior to the François-Henri Pinault scandal, Linda dated Twin Peaks star Kyle MacLachlan and found time to appear with him in ads for Barneys and a Meisel Vogue story. Unfortunately the couple that poses together doesn’t always stay together and they broke things off in the mid-90s.

1992: Richard Gere and Cindy Crawford by Herb Ritts

Does it get better than this? The answer is no it doesn’t. It does not get any better, Orlando Bloom and Miranda Kerr are not going to give you this kind of movie star & model chicness, bask in the glory of this cover.

And none for Leo.

Even Cowgirls Get The Blues

January 27th, 2012 |Posted by Janelle

The west is wild, but who better to tame it than Catherine McNeil? Clad in cowboy boots and snakeskin styled by Capucine Safyurtlu, Cat looks downright iconic: Knoepfel & Indlekofer‘s images for Vogue Paris call to mind all we love about westerns, but provide a touch of femininity via ethereal touches like a denim blouse that literally glows. Gorgeous.

mdc ♥s : Spring Fragrances

April 4th, 2011 |Posted by Janelle

Catherine McNeil understands the power of fragrance

We tried and tested dozens of fragrances to bring you our picks for the absolute best for Spring. We’ve narrowed it down to 11 scents we feel epitomize the season, whether you’re looking for something classic or completely edgy. Take a look at our picks and tell us your favorite Spring fragrance in the comments.

FRESH

Marc Jacobs Daisy Eau so Fresh

Marc Jacobs’ scents have always attracted our attention, but his latest Daisy Eau So Fresh, is truly a marvel. With lush notes of violet, raspberry, grapefruit and plum, the fragrance is positively bursting with energy and vitality. One spritz and you instantly feel the youthful and whimsical vibe captured in the ads with Hannah Holman.

Byredo La Tulipe
Inspired by the scent of fresh tulips covered in morning dew, Byredo’s elegant fragrance is a touch of magic. With one spritz you’ll be transported to a lush garden, even on the rainiest April days. Interesting fact: Byredo’s Ben Gorham began his career as an athlete before heading into the world of perfumery.

SOPHISTICATED

Estee Private Collection Jasmine White Moss
Leave it to Estee Lauder to give you a vintage classic with modern edge, their Private Collection Jasmin White Moss is based on an fragrance idea from Estee herself, that was never completed during her lifetime. Taking the initial scent and reworking it into a beautiful fresh chypre with notes of mandarin and black currant and jasmine they’ve created a new classic.

Narciso Rodriguez Essence Eau de Musc
You can’t talk about sophistication without thinking of Narciso Rodriguez’s minimal designs and his range of fragrances perfectly captures the refined spirit of his brand. Musk isn’t a note we automatically associate with spring, but the light and clean musk featured in this latest scent is perfect year round. Iris, bergamot and bergamot, spices round out this intoxicating blend that is sure to get you noticed.

ROMANTIC

Hanae Mori No. 3

Composed of three different types of sunflowers, as well as blackcurrant buds, freesia, jasmine, raspberry, sandalwood, No. 3 is a sweet and heady blend that instantly draws you in. Paying tribute to sunrise, midday and sunset, the fragrance changes as you wear it, moving from a light burst of fruity floral and turning into something darker and deeper as the day goes on. Act fast on this one as it is a limited edition!

Guerlain La Petite Robe Nore 2

Like the perfect little black dress, Guerlain’s La Petite Robe Noire 2 accentuates all the positives and brings the sex appeal in spades. The unexpected and decadent combination of iris, violet and marshmallow makes for a sugary rush that fades into a sexy ultra-feminine scent.

UNISEX

Frederic Malle Geranium Pour Monsieur

A compelling scent for a man (or woman) who is tired of the usual fare and interested in trying something new. Cool mint infused with anise, geranium, vetiver and incense makes for a scent that is crisp and never overpowering. The perfect accent to a bespoke suit and that worn in pair of Fratelli Rossetti oxfords.

Altelier Cologne Bois Blonds

An effortlessly charming combo of pink pepper, neroli and blond woods that adds a touch of class no matter the occassion. The cologne formulation makes it easy to splash on but for those looking for an even more discreet accent, Bois Blonds also comes in a matching soap.

UNIQUE

Six Scents Alexis Mabille Beau Bow

Sambac, magnolia, honeysuckle, attar – sumptuous notes to compliment Mabille’s cutting edge designs. Taking the popular 70s Eau Fraiche formulation and re-imagining it with exotic ingredients, perfumer Rodrigo Flores-Roux creates an intoxicating blend for men and women.

Diptyque 34 Boulevard Saint Germain

Given the quality of their candles, room sprays, soaps and body products, you could scent your entire life with Diptyque fragrance. Their latest, 34 Boulevard Saint Germain takes that idea and runs with it, combining the scents of multiple Diptyque classics and combining them into one spicy chypre knockout of a fragrance.

BONUS : CUSTOMIZE YOUR OWN SCENT

Jo Malone Tea Fragrance Blends

If you’re anything at all like us you like the idea of having a scent that is yours and yours alone. Of course a course in perfumery and trip to Grasse may be slightly out of your budget right now, but Jo Malone’s signature fragrance layering allows everyone to create a truly individual blend. The latest from the line, the Tea Fragrance blends are a luxury take on quintessential British traditions. Scents like Fresh Mint Leaf and Earl Grey & Cucumber Cologne can be layered with each other or on top of your current fragrance, to create a refreshing new experience.
